Thank you for taking this interview with us here at Lens and Light Magazine! Pleese state your name, occupation, and any other details about who you are. Don’t be shy! Thank you for having me, it’s a pleasure to be here with you today. My name is Ayumi Tanaka. I’m a Japanese citizen here for business, so pardon my bad English. All I can disclose about my occupation is that I’m working for the Arasaka corporation.
What I can tell you, though, is that I’m versed in martial arts and netrunning. Outside of work, I usually like to spend my evenings training at the dojo and reward myself with a nice homecooked meal and a glass of red wine.
Night City is known not for the strongest, but those willing to do anything to survive. Do you consider yourself someone who can survive in any
circumstance? Is there any moment in your past that could serve as the “point” where you had to survive in this city?
Well, as a matter of fact yes, there is one. My very first day in Night City, actually. You must have heard about the incident at Konpeki Plaza? I had a room there for the duration of my stay, but as soon as I entered the building, a code red was declared. I only had time to gather some weapons before I encountered those two psychopaths destroying everything in their path. Lost both my arms and some other limbs to a grenade in the crossfire. They used to be organic, you know. I took great pride in having the least chrome possible! Now, I’m more chrome than flesh, but at least I’m somewhat alive.
What is your best memory in the city?
Would there be anyone you could contribute to that happy memory?
Let me think…I don’t really have happy memories here. I did attend an event recently though, Lizzy Wizzy’s concert at the Black Sapphire! A pleasant break and great occasion to do some networking.
Do you think you’ve ever found love here? Who is that special someone for you that stands out from the rest? I actually came here with my lover. Unfortunately Night City hasn’t been kind with us since we both lost something at Konpeki Plaza.

I lost my humanity, he basically lost his identity. Goro used to be Saburo-sama’s bodyguard. I’m currently trying to gather intel and witnesses to help him prove his innocence to the board of directors.
Describe your perfect day in Night City for someone who wants to visit! So, you are telling me people come here to visit willingly? Such a strange idea. But, I guess it could still be worse, like that Dogtown district. I did like the Black Sapphire though. Well, my perfect day would start by having a nice walk through Chram Denya Jinja, the Shintō Shrine located in North Oak. This sub-district is the most decent one. Once I’d feel recharged, I would head to Lele park in Charter Hill to grab something edible and maybe do some shopping while I’m at it. I would end the day either relaxing with a nice bottle of wine at Embers or attending a show at Dark Matter, it would depend on the mood.
Do you have any sort of reputation here? Would anyone say that they fear you or want to be you?
Well, I’ve been here a while now and made myself a name in the higher spheres. I’m known to be cold and methodic and always manage to get what I want. Do as you please with this information.
If you could change one thing about the city, what would it be? What’s the one thing you would keep?
What I would change?
Everything. What I would keep? That’s a hard question…I grew fond of the city’s randomness. It’s a strange and fragile ecosystem, very interesting to witness. I think that’s what makes Night City’s only charm.
If Night City is one of survival, where do you belong? Do you have any place that you can call home?
I don’t plan on staying here so I never asked myself this question.
My home is in Japan and I cannot wait to go back. Once my lover’s reputation is cleared, we leave this city for good.
That is the last question from us! Is there anything else you would like to say to our audience?
Night City isn’t a place for the faint of heart. I truly admire its inhabitants; you people have nerves of steel to endure all this mess. I know it might sound strange coming from a corpo like me, but keep it up. Prove your worth, build your reputation, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. With this mindset, you have a chance to make it to what you people call the major league.

CYBER VESNA MODDER INSIDER
Thank you for wanting to be interviewed, Vesna! You’ve been in the community quite some time; you’ve must have learned a lot over the years. What is one of your favorite modding moments where you learned something new unexpectedly?
Of course! It’s a pleasure, really! I honestly can’t believe how long I’ve been around! And yes, these years have resulted in a lot of experience in multiple subjects. Which brings us to my favorite “Eureka!” moments.
I hope I explain it right and it’s not crazy, but I kinda have WolvenKit and Blender in my head at this point, which helps me visualize/simulate how to do something in theory. So when I’m away from my PC, I often think about doing something, and how to do it.
With those visualizations in my head, my brain just connects the dots. I know it sounds wild, but let me give you an example: I had no idea about hair porting. But at that point, I already custompathed several hair mods to my Custom Hanako and I’ve ported some clothes already. So in my head, I started connecting the two processes by using the clothing technique on hair, and what I know from custompathing to implement it in the game. And then I tried it for real, and eureka! It worked.
My favorite moment like that is regarding poses. We know that AMM poses can be tedious to do with the separate workspot and whatnot. Well, I thought to myself, that there must be a more efficient way to do it (Before Wolv did the tool).
So I started to reverse-engineer the process in my head, which got me to simplify the naming structure, and with that, I needed something that would allow me to bulk rename. Thanks to being a dinosaur in the modding scene I knew I could hypothetically export my files to .json because back in the day we used to export .mesh files to make some specific edits. This turned out to be correct, and my AMM Poses with simplified naming turned into 10-second job of exporting .workspot to .json and selecting my naming structure to click “Replace all occurrences” in Visual Studio Code.
If someone happened to ask me for help, they may recall that sometimes I say “I haven’t done this specific thing but theoretically this should work if you do…” because, at this point, my mind just tosses those simulations in my head based on similarities of the topic at hand in reference to what I already did in the past. Thanks to that, I’m usually able to help someone even tho I’m not at my PC at the moment.
What was the inspiration behind ‘House of Vesna’?
Oh, that’s gonna be a rabbit hole, haha! I was about to open my virtual shop, so I needed something universal. I was looking at the big fashion houses and at some point, the algorithm showed me a clip of Lady Gaga in “House of Gucci” where she says “Father, Son and House of Gucci”. I was thinking about it and then was like, let’s goooo! So if you go to my “- House of Vesna - (Virtual Atelier)” you will see at the top “Father, Son and House of Vesna”. And well, why the cat as my logo?
My very first cloth 3D model was…Sweater for Nibbles! I found an unused cat icon in game files and made hi-res of it for my store.
Then, when I picked up human cloth design for the first time and I showed the progress of it to my friends (shout out to Gonkposting <3) they called me all sorts of high fashion brands - Giorgio Vesmani, Vesnaciaga and Donatella Vesnace. As you know by now, Vesnace itself has become my “in-game” brand. But it doesn’t stop here.
The fashion designer joke rolled around Gonks, and one day, Siliconpit woke up and decided to take my modding branding to the next level and she designed me an actual logo! The one that is plastered all over my mods is her stunning work, that most of you probably recognize me from. Sil kept the original Nibbles in and rolled with the design inspired by Versace’s Medusa with a touch of Japanese ornaments (back then 90% of my stuff was for Hanako). To say I’m in love is an understatement.
With that being said I can safely say, that the inspiration behind “House of Vesna” are my friends. They believed in me at my lowest, they saw the potential I had and supported me when most pretended I didn’t exist. They created the “House of Vesna”, because if not for them, I would’ve walked away. And I’m so grateful I didn’t because I keep meeting new people, and that inspires me even more to keep going since thanks to them, I can learn even more. And if I’m not doing it for myself, I’m doing it for my friends, old and new.
What is your favorite mod that you’ve released on the NexusMods? Why? This may be shocking because that mod isn’t performing the best, but it’s my Sweater for Nibbles! It was my most groundbreaking mod and it was something no one had done before, so help was limited. BUT I wanted to prove myself. Maybe my motivation wasn’t the best, but, I wanted to prove to people that I am good enough modder (even though no one but me cared). So to show you how complicated it was: I 3D designed sweater in Marvelous Designer that I opened for the first time. I had no idea what I’m doing. So yeah, I remember I was going crazy. I couldn’t figure this out for two days, and in between I dreamed of trying to solve it in the 010 application. Like I had a literal nightmare with 010 templates in my head. But the feeling when I did it… I was so proud of myself for doing it. It unlocked a new horizon, knowing that I’m capable of things above my understanding because it’s always a matter of time before I break it.
Is there anything you would tell your past self who is first starting out?
Interesting, because after thinking I wouldn’t say a thing. I know this may sound crazy but when I started, I just wanted to put on Hanako nomad clothes, since I’m not an artist and couldn’t do art with her and my V. Modding opened a new world of artistic expression. Even though it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, and I had terrible experiences within the community, I still wouldn’t say a thing. Saying something would disrupt the law of time, and I would never, ever change what I have now for the unknown. Blood, sweat, and tears at the end of the day are worth
it. And I know past me would respect that and be proud of the place I am now.
Do you have one crucial tip that everyone should have in their modding “toolbox”?
“The more you fuck around, the more you gonna find out,” attitude and willingness to learn. We have so many tutorials now, amazing modding tool…It has never been easier than now! However, if someone wants to mod, but doesn’t want to “get dirty” in the process, then no matter how much you will explain it to someone, they won’t learn it. If you want to be a modder you need to be ready for trials and errors, because it’s not easy. Most importantly, there’s only step oneDO IT.
How has modding affected your personal endeavors? Do you see any skills passing over from here to anywhere else in your life?
Oh, absolutely! I mod because it’s one of the closest things to what I want to do professionally - game development. Specifically, I want to write/design a narrative for a quest/game, that’s why my mods are just tools for doing some kind of a story.
Everything I learn and do can be used in my portfolio, so for me, modding is kind of personal. I see it as an opportunity to grow as a creator in a fun way. And well, there are people I look up to who know me from my work, so that’s a huge deal and honor for me. However, there are bad sides to it too. It’s a competitive environment, even if you don’t want be in it. Numbers, popularity, even moneyit’s hard to deny it doesn’t play any part
in the community. It does, and it’s easy to get carried away. Especially, can be hard for newcomers, who come as baby modders and see all these skilled people. It’s important to remember that people are good at something because they do it long enough. We all started somewhere! And we can reach that level too. I burned out by comparing myself to other modders, thinking that I was not efficient and productive enough, and it was an easy mind trap that affected my self-esteem.
It’s something I still struggle with, and the only advice I have for others struggling with it is to have a strong support system with genuine friends. I’m so thankful I have it both in the community + in real life.
You have over 300,000 unique downloads. You’ve tackled props, poses, hair, clothing, makeup, and more! What’s the next stop on your modding adventures?
Getting close to 400,000 and it kinda ruins my narrative, that I do mods no one cares about, haha. I plan to finish what I have cooking for Cyberpunk, and then I’m gonna do a small detour to another dimension called The Witcher 3! I want to check out RedKit and finally dig into quest design. But don’t worry!
I don’t plan on leaving Cyberpunk, quite the opposite really - I want to learn the ins and outs of quest modding in TW3, so I can have a better understanding of it in Cyberpunk! Hopefully, one day I will be able to brag about a small DLC to my name!
Is there anything else you would like to tell any new modders?
Don’t be afraid to ask. And don’t get discouraged if someone doesn’t reply. There will be people willing to help, and there are no “stupid questions”. Believe me, I used to be such a clown asking about things because EVERYTHING was beyond my comprehension. But I am here, thanks to that. We have a saying, “Who asks not
stray.” and I live by that. And those big modders you are afraid to ask/bother are human too. Yes, some are snobs, but others would love to help and share their knowledge.

UNDER THE HOOD Multilayer Masking
You may have noticed Cyberpunk 2077’s incredibly high-quality materials—from thick wool knits to textured leather and worn denim. Unlike a traditional image texture of other 3D models in video games, CD Projekt Red’s unique materials system uses a UV-based layering approach called Multilayer Masking.
There’s two essential files for this process: a multilayer mask list (.mlmask) and a multilayer setup (.mlsetup). The mlmask sets where each of the materials will be placed on the mesh, and the mlsetup defines what kind of material it is, material color, and other properties
such as roughness, metalness, normal strength, material tile size, orientation, and a few other properties that allow for maximum customization of how the material appears.
Multilayer materials can also use a pattern template called microblends, which masks the material on the layer. For example, if a microblend in a mask layer is a flower shape, the material will only appear in a flower shape. The flowers can be made larger or smaller by adjusting the tilingit’s how you see similar patterns across in-game clothing in different pattern sizes.

Modder’s How-To
Custom Multilayer Mask
NOTE: Editing an existing mask? Exporting the .mlmask file from Wolvenkit will automatically generate all layers as .png files and the .masklist file you need. Just edit, save, and import.
Creating your own multilayer mask can be helpful if you’d like to use the native materials system for ports, or you can get creative with drawing on the UV in order to create patterns.
1. With your model in Blender, open the UV from the UV Editing tab.
2. Enter edit mode on your mesh and press A to select all faces. This will have the UV of the entire mesh appear in the UV layout preview.
3. Select UV > Export UV Layout.
4. In the export dialog, change the Fill Opacity to 1.00.
5. Open the UV export in an image editor of your choice such as Photoshop or Paint.net.
6. On the UV layout, set the brightness to 100% in order to change all of the UV to white.
7. Create a black background for the white UV.
8. Make any changes as desired to the mask layer, using the white UV on black background as a base.
8a. Black on the UV will have no material showing and white will have completely opaque material.
8b. If you are using a microblend, you must set any area on the mask layer to a light gray, otherwise you will experience distortion with the blend pattern.
9. Repeat step 5 for as many mask layers as you need. Remember that a full coverage base mask layer will be created for you upon import.
10. To merge the mask layers to create a .mlmask file:
a. In the raw folder in Wolvenkit, create folder(s) where you’d like your textures to be.
b. Create a .txt file and paste the full file paths of each of your .png mask layer files on your computer.
c. Rename the text file to replace .txt with .masklist.
d. In Wolvenkit’s Import utility, you will see the .masklist you created with an Import Task of MLMASK.
e. Import the .masklist and a .mlmask file will appear in your project’s archive folder in the same folder structure as your raw folder.
f. Path the .mlmask you just created to the MultilayerMask field in the CMaterialInstance for your desired material.
g. Make any changes to the mlsetup as desired for each mask layer you just created.
You’re done!
Every mlmask can contain up to 19 custom layers, so get as intricate as you need to. Mlmask layers can be upscaled up to 4096 x 4096 to get fine details, or smoothed out to create natural looking gradients.

Whether it’s staring down the camera or looking lovingly at a partner, control over your subject’s eyes can bring so much life into your photography. If you’ve ever struggled with getting your AMM spawned characters to look in just the right place, I love using props as look-at targets.
1. Using AMM, spawn and pose your characters as desired.
2. In the Decor tab, spawn a prop of your choosing. It will be off-camera, so it can be whatever you’d like! I typically choose a glass.
3. Use the AMM positioning tools to move the prop just beyond where you’d like them to look, such as behind someone’s head.
4. Target your spawned character and open target tools.
5. Under Look At, select your desired option:
a. All - Target will pivot their head and upper torso. Typically leaves legs stationary. This can be very extreme, depending on the pose and the subject.
b. Head Only - Only target’s head will move.
c. Eyes Only - Only target’s eyes will move.
6. Under Current Target check the Enable Spawned Props box.
7. Select the desired prop from the drop-down list and click Activate to trigger the target to look at the prop with the set behavior.
a. You can play around with the pose Stiffness and Override sliders to change how much the target will pivot their head/body to look at the prop.
b. Tip: You may need to change the facial expression and/or deactivate and reactivate to force the look-at function between changes.
