Thank you for listening and supporting this year’s Untold Stories. I have no doubt you, like me, will be inspired by what you hear.

While I credit PLS for changing my outlook on leadership, I could say the same about my experience as a member of The Lenny Zakim Fund’s Board of Directors. Since joining the LZF Board in 2018, I have served on LZF’s Community Investments Committee which is responsible each year for considering applications submitted by grassroots organizations as part of our annual grants program. These organizations, often founded by individuals who are faced with a social, economic, or racial problem that impacts them or others in their communities, looks to LZF for critical funding to help turn a vision into a sustainable reality. It is through my role on the CIC that I first met some of these leaders as part of our site visits and heard about what led them to assume roles as nonprofit leaders – often times without the typical educational training or work experience.

Untold Stories is LZF’s opportunity to publicly shine a much needed spotlight on some of these amazing leaders of the nearly 400 grassroots organizations who are part of LZF’s grantee portfolio. In sharing their stories, people such as this year’s storytellers, Yahaira Lopez, founder and executive

Earlier this year, I had the incredible honor of being selected for the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program. An intensive and transformational, six-month program-PLS brings together bold and principled leaders who are committed to facing critical challenges, both at home and around the world, and who are interested in exploring lessons learned during the administrations of George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson. The experience broadened my understanding of how to lead in a unifying and inclusive manner.

Storytelling and listening are at the heart of The Lenny Zakim Fund’s mission. The Fund seeks to listen to those most impacted by inequity and provide the funding, essential resources, and support they need to create lasting change. A key component of our outsized impact is the way in which we amplify and uplift the stories of “below the radar” leaders, activists, and communities to advance social, economic, and racial justice. Storytelling allows us to share and learn from the both the highs and lows of life; shaping the future pathway by thoughtfully reflecting on the respective journeys that brought us this far.

On behalf of The Lenny Zakim Fund, I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation and thanks to our sponsors, donors, guests, volunteers, Bridge Builders, current and past board members, friends, and grantee partners. Thank you for helping to make The Fund’s work possible.

I am proud of how The Fund has stood in solidarity with our grantee partners for twenty-seven years. We will continue to do so. I am proud of the way this community comes together to uplift and to respect the dignity of underserved and underrepresented communities. I am proud of how our charity starts at home. So, I thank you. Thank you for working towards justice and equity for their neighbors.

We cannot normalize oppression. We cannot normalize hate. We will not.

DEAR WelcomeFRIENDS,tooursecond

Our individual journeys may indeed look very different, but our collective journey and vision for leaving the world a bit better than it was before we arrived should be a rallying call that binds s together. In South Carolina, I learned at an early age about the history of slavery and emancipation. I also learned about cooperative economics and the notions that for every opportunity and door I was able to open or walk through, I should also create and open even more doors so that others may follow and surpass me. It can feel like that is missing from the world these days. It can seem like that given the way some of our neighbors are so cruel to immigrants and other oppressed group. Yet, that is not the norm.

The Lenny Zakim Fund’s Untold Stories

Untold Stories gala! I am so thrilled you can join us for an inspiring and rousing storytelling event. Untold Stories is our way of shining a spotlight on the amazing grassroots leaders in our midst who will share their compelling personal stories of resistance, resilience, and change in their efforts to champion social justice.
