CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Research With the combination of in-depth research of how organisms create mutualistic relationships, technology and human interaction, an interactive installation is created. This installation is an expression of a mutualistic relationship between humans and the environment. This installation investigates such expressions by creating phases in which human interaction is limited and controlled in the beginning, but later the form relies solely on human interaction.

Mutualism begings to form

Mutualism This expressive mutualistic relationship is made with TouchDesigner and a kinect sensor. Sensors and visual programming languages were used to achieve an expression of a person’s mutualistic relationship with the environment that surrounds us.

Interaction The infrared sensors detect movement and allow for a mutualistic relationship to be formed. When a person’s arms are in motion, a form is created. Throughout the different phases of mutualisms, the form is able to-move, change color, expand , contract, evolve and adapt to the human. pg 8

CONNECTIVE TISSUE - Back-end

Human Interaction Human interaction is an integral component of this project. The phases of mutualism depict a journey of how human interaction is less effective in the beginning, but integral to the form’s survival at the end of the journey.

This expression is made possible by the use of Kinect motion sensor technology. More specifically, movements made by the user can be broken down into points and vectors. TouchDesigner then recognizes these point and vectors and in-turn, the designer can begin applying particle systems, swarm behaviors and arrayed geometry to the kinetic points. Additionally, the designer can program in, using python, a timer to control how long a particle or geometry may live.

In Connective Tissue, the user is able to control color by opening their right palm and closing it, each time the palm is viewed by the motion sensor a color change occurs. The color spectrum implemented is controlled by a python script that applies a number to a color. Each time the palm is opened the color spectrum jumps by one.

Consequently, the form is now fully controlled by the user. With these emerging technologies the possibilities are endless to how a designer can give control to the user. Giving the user the capacity to design and create for themselves.

Full Script Touchdesigner programming language containts boxes of information. Within each container exists another layer of information that is then connected to one output.

Interactive design can be described as an exchange of information that leads to a kinetic relationship between the user and the environment.

Similarly, one could see it as a mutualistic relationship that is constantly looping information. Therefore, could humans have mutualistic relationships with the environment that surrounds us? Is that such a far-reaching concept? Connective Tissue – The Journey of a Mutualistic Cyborg can be described as a project that investigates such relationships.

Phasing In Connective Tissue, the interactive mutualism begins with a form driven by audio frequencies from our everyday environment. This project captures this relationship through audio recordings of our surroundings which then is translated to a physical form. The audio frequency loops through the interactive system, then the interactive system uses its frequency and pitch to create a form based on the type of sound that emerges. If a sound is violent and loud, more particles are emitted allowing for more dense and aggressive form.

If a sound is soft and calming, less particles are emitted creating a soft silhouette.

The interaction of the user is limited in the beginning phases, only enabling the user to control position. As the relationship begins to strengthen, the user has more and more control of the size, location, color and density of the form. As the middle phases approach, color, location and size can be controlled by the user and the audio generated form begins to vanish. Finally, in the final phases, form is controlled only by human interaction, the form relies on the interaction for survival. If the interaction is broken, the form dissipates and leaves an imprint of what was.

Introduction

Design Methodoloy

Mesa Rim Climbing Center will be approximately 50,000 sq ft. and feature 55ft. climbing walls, an expansive bouldering area, yoga studio, cardio and weight training areas, sauna, and spa quality locker rooms. Mesa Rim Austin is expected to break ground this summer with plans to open mid-2021.

To keep costs low, we selected a pre-engineered metal buildng. The parametric canopy is what sets this facility apart from the others. This design was generated by dividing a structural grid to carry a panel system.

Additionally, each panel is identical, but mirrored and translated among the structure. This allows for ease of construction and is a cost affective solution rather than having unique parts.

Panels These panels were designed with a budget in mind.

There are two types of metal panels, a frames and solid version. Both types have the exact same dimensions and triangulations.

Using a recursive design methodology, each panel was rotated, mirrored and translated to create a rocky, rough and sharp edge, much like what you would see climbing a mountain.

THE VEIN - Pnuematic Wearable

Traveling to Mars?

The Vein is a pneumatic wearable designed to be worn in outer space. We designed and generated computationally, a vein structure that is super imposed on this wearable. For those who travel to space, micro-gravity causes lack of blood circulation and muscle atrophy.

This wearable solves that problem by creating a pressurized suit that targets vein structures in the human body, constricting them and consequently promoting blood circulation throughout the body.

THE VEIN - Hardware + Software

Grasshopper Script for Vein Structure The branching is controlled with the random command, more specifically the branching is controlled by random points located on the surface. With the integer slider, control over the amount of points directly correlates to the amount of branching generated.

Once the shortest walk and random branching have been established, the size of the vein structure can be manipulated. The diameter is controlled by a number slider that gives three dimensions to the vein structure.

Pneuduino Pneuduino is a modular hardware platform for controlling air flow and pressure. The hardware is open source and can be programmed using the Arduino IDE. In the Vein, the pneuduino was used to gather the heart rate of the individual wearing the suite.

If the individuals heart beat dropped to a critical range, the pneuduino was programmed to kick in and supply air to the suite, consequently compress the areas of the body that needed blood flow.

Introduction Immigrants make up 60% of the population in Miami.

Consequently, Miami has been built and maintained by immigrants. This proposal aims to aid the newly immigrated individuals with no connections to jobs and other resources build a plethora of relationships that will aid them toward economic prosperity. Creating a meshwork of social interactions,- where an individual with no social connections could start to build a mesh work of contacts that would enable them to prosper.

Located in a dense region of Miami Beach, the Miami Habitat creates a city in itself. Creating a habitat that includes residential, public and business spaces. Spaces would include a barbershop, fresh market and other necessities. This enables the inhabitants to own a small business located on the grounds and a commodity. No need to own a car, just live in the Miami Habitat and everything you need is at your fingertips. Creating a prosperous life that is attainable.

Introduction + Responsibilities This 1,500 s.f. ground up kitchen will be located on south Oltorf. This infamous taco shop is take away with some outdoor seating. With financial constraints, our team was abble to design a cost effective solution that matches the quality of al pastor tacos Rosita’s serves.

My responsibilites included: design developement, client relations, creating construction documents and project coordination.

THE HIVE

Introduction Located in an urban setting, The Hive must be a volume that is easily accessible to pedestrians and maintains a high capacity of pedestrian traffic. The site is located near a large train station. The exits out of the train station are responsible for the waves of high pedestrian traffic. Due to its location, direct access from many points is integral to relieve congestion. The form was adapted to accommodate many access points.

ACCESS

Specifically, the form extends down under the bridge at multiple points and provides access in one of the most highly congested areas in the city. In addition to the two access points mentioned above, canopies extend out and over two more access points, providing another means of circulation. The extended canopies also act as a node to the city and pedestrians. Finally, the canopies provide shelter to the pedestrians during the rainy seasons.

Generating Flocking Behaivor This form was generated by creating parameters such as: avoidance, alignment, and coherance. Flocking is an implementation of Craig Reynolds program to simulate flocking behavior of birds. Each line steers itself based on these rules. (Rhino - Grasshopper)

3D Prints These prints were generated by creating a profile sweep in the x and z direction. Parameters were implemented to control the thickness, distance and smoothness of each curve.

Subsuquently, this created two different typologies in a matter of seconds.

Generating Perlin Noise Perlin noise is resulted from the work of Ken Perlin. With the aid of emergent technology, a form was generated from the principles of perlin noise. Which includes randomization, velocity and vector direction.
