The Temperate Rain Forest is found in North America, Oceania, Europe , South America and Europe. There Are Northern and Southern Regions of this Biome and they wrap like a circle around the earth. They are inbetween the Arctic Circles and the Topical Zones, in detail 40-60 degrees north and south.

Genral Infomation Genral Physical Description

There are 7 remaining large temerate rainforests in the world. At Temerate Rainforests there are tall trees that rise up from the ground coverd in mosses. Many birds and slugs make their home here in the humid climate. Many small, shade loving trees hug the floor of the forest.

Genral Infomation Aveage temperatures and Percipitation The average temperature in the long wet season is O degrees celius and during the short dry season is 27 degrees celius. In higher altitudes there can be snow during the winter. The average percipitation is 200cm300cm. So remeber to bring your raincoats when visiting a temperate rainforest.

Siberian Tiger Adaptations The Siberian Tiger has had to adapt to it's cold climate with adaptations such as thick coats, strong muscles, camouflage, along with loose fur on their belly to soften blows by predators/prey.

The Siberian Tiger has fur that has a rusty red color with yellow and black stripes. They at one point were the largest tiger in the world. They can weigh up to 701 lbs. and they can grow up to 60 in in body length.

Shrew Shrews are small mammals that have distinguishable fur, along with small eyes and ears, and large incur teeth to hunt down prey. Shrews can grow from 3.5 cm long to 15 cm long.

Adaptations Shrews have many adaptations that include long claws to burrow underground, small eyes and ears that become camouflaged, some have special skin over their eyes so they can hunt underwater, some have a long tail to move through vines and bushes, and some shrews have an enlarged vertebrae that can support the weight of a human being.

Japanese Snow Monkey

The Japanese Snow Monkey has a pink face and a pink posterior. They have have fur tends to be brown, gray, or yellow brown. Also, snow monkeys from the colder areas tend to weigh more then the ones from the warmer areas.

Plants The Maple Leaf Tree The Big Leaf Maple Tree is the biggest maple tree. It has over sized leaves. The Maple Tree is able to grow in a variety of conditions but it prefers to grow here in the Temperate Rain forest where it is moist and shady.

Animals are attracted to all parts of the tree. They feed off flowers, leaves, seeds, twigs, and buds. If done under right conditions the sap from the tree can be made into a sweet maple syrup. The tree also produces sweet scented flowers and appear in early spring to June. The wood from the maple tree is also used in pianos.

Adaptations

The Big Leaf Maple Tree drops its leaves when the temperature cools. This is beneficial because in the winter trees have less access to sunlight and by dropping the leaves they can prevent water loss from photosynthesis. The Maple Tree reproduces in a unique way.

Their seeds have wing like designs which helps them flutter down to the surface.

Through evolution the seed started landing in an optimal position, away from the parent and any disease the parent has.

The Oregon Grape

The Oregon Grape is a shrub that grows in our temperate rain forest. This shrub has prickly leaves and typically grows to 6 cm. It produces clusters of yellow flowers which produce tart-tasting purple like berries.

Birds love these berries and people make wine from them.

Maple Syrup Run Description

There will be a lake of maple syrup in the Olympic national park in Washington states temperate rain forest. The contestants will have to jump into the lake and try to get as much syrup as they can on their bodies. Then they have vault over obstacles with no way underneath. They then will have to run to a bucket specifically assigned for them.

They will have to try to pour all the syrup off their bodies into the bucket. The first contestant to fill the bucket with maple syrup wins a prize. The prize will be a Jar of Maple Syrup, a choice of breakfast and a Shrew.
