10.16.2023 Lenawee Now is a public-private partnership dedicated to economic and business expansion throughout Lenawee County. By attracting new businesses, helping to grow established businesses, and supporting entrepreneurial endeavors in Lenawee, Lenawee Now is creating an economically viable and vibrant region.

What We Do Our Mission:

To preserve existing jobs and foster the creation of more jobs for our citizens and more tax revenue for our communities. To support and collaborate with initiatives to improve the quality of life for all Lenawee County citizens thus making Lenawee County the choice for new and existing business growth.

Our Methods:

Lenawee Now functions as a project coordinator for both the communities we support and the companies we serve. Our efforts can be fairly simple, such as compiling information for a company to use in its decision making, or as involved as full project management for large company attractions / expansions. This can include everything from: • Connecting clients to proper resources • Working with clients and or their site selectors to help determine a location for a project • Managing the incentive paperwork and process • Advising entrepreneurs on the process to create and grow a business • Making presentations to key public and private decision makers • Assist companies in finding and securing financing • Talent recruitment and training efforts When companies apply for local or state incentives, they fill out applications that require both job creation and investment estimates. Lenawee Now considers these projects a success after they are publicly announced or when the required approval process has taken place for the incentive sought by the company. Our jobs and investment numbers are based on these project announcements provided by the companies. Whatever role we might play, we report jobs and investments for projects where we have played an active role in helping a company decide to move forward.

Executive Director Update At Lenawee Now, we have many challenges and opportunities to continue to build prosperity in our County. Affordable housing, workforce development, and childcare play vital roles in supporting economic development in Lenawee County. By ensuring access to affordable housing, individuals and families can live and work in the county, fostering stability and contributing to a thriving local economy. Workforce development initiatives help equip residents with the skills and training needed to secure better job opportunities, attracting businesses and stimulating economic growth. Additionally, affordable and quality childcare services enable working parents to pursue employment, boosting productivity and allowing them to contribute to the county's economic development. Together, these elements create a foundation for a prosperous and inclusive community in Lenawee County.

News

Senator Joe Bellino Secures $10 Million for New Workforce Development Center, Adrian, MI Adrian, MI – August 1, 2023 (Adrian, August 1, 2023) Senator Joe Bellino has successfully secured $10 million for a new workforce development center in Adrian MI. Lenawee Now economic development will oversee and execute this transformative initiative. It will facilitate the creation of a state-of-the-art workforce development center on the east side of Adrian. The center aims to empower residents with essential skills and knowledge to keep pace with the evolving job market demands and prepare people of all ages for success. Lenawee Now economic development is leading this endeavor and will ensure the workforce development center’s effective operation providing education, training, and professional development opportunities to benefit the community. This plan underscores Lenawee Now’s commitment to being a regional leader in workforce development and economic prosperity. Lenawee Now has been developing and incubating “The Align Center for Workforce Development” headed by Randy Yagiela for the past 5 years and is ready to start services quickly. Executive Director of Lenawee Now, Patrick Farver states, this new center will give us the opportunity to fundamentally change and improve our community in a massive way. We look forward to getting started quickly and collaborating with many other organizations to provide much-needed services and training for all areas of Lenawee County. What we do will not replace anything we already do but will enhance and build on all the great things going on in Lenawee County. The new workforce development center will feature advanced technology, innovative training facilities, and expert faculty offering diverse programs to meet the needs of various industries including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology among others. The center also plans to work closely with other partners such as ProMedica EBEID and HOLA as well as others to ensure alignment between the curriculum and the changing needs of the job market and the needs of the community. We will also address the gap in skilled trades by supporting the programs offered by the LISD/SMCSI. Another important area we will address is Human Empowerment for all people in need of services by collaborating with existing resources and building new programs where needed. The new center is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, creating numerous employment opportunities while helping attract new businesses to the region while also addressing several social issues as well.

Align Center for Workforce Development Hosts Externship Celebration

News, Continued

The Align Center for Workforce Development recognized 12 Teachers and Counselors from 7 different school districts for their participation in the Externship Program on Wednesday, September 27, at the LISD TECH Center. At this event, the participants enjoyed a meal catered by 3 Dudes and Dinner and gave a brief presentation about their experience. Through the Externship Program, school faculty had the opportunity to learn about career paths, educational options, as well as technical and soft skills for today’s workforce, by job shadowing at a Lenawee County company for two weeks. Over the course of their two weeks, externs see all company departments, learn about the roles and responsibilities of the employees, and assist with projects. According to Sheila Blair, Manager of the Align Center for Workforce Development: “Our goal is to provide opportunities for our schools and employers to collaborate…” Over the course of the night, the externs shared a very positive experience and were very excited about the things they would implement in the classroom. A common theme among presentations was soft skill development. The externs were able to hear firsthand about what employers experience with today’s workforce. Another poignant aspect of the experience for many was the practical application of school subjects. An algebra teacher who spent their time at Planewave had many practical examples for the application of algebra from his externship. Likewise, a math teacher at 3DPT found that math was used in many facets of the business from scheduling to pain assessments. Lastly, all the participants were excited to learn about the available career opportunities for different educational levels. Many of the companies had occupational opportunities for individuals ranging from a high school diploma to college degrees. Thanks to our participating host sites: Plastic Omnium, Lenawee County, Michigan, Greater Lenawee Chamber, Evonik, Anderson Development Company, Promedica, Michigan Agriculture Commodities, Our Family Friend, 3DPT YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Lenawee and PlaneWave Instruments.

Lenawee Now Welcomes Industry 4.0 Technology Showcase to Lenawee County

Events Held

Working to extend Michigan’s national leadership in advanced manufacturing, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is leading a statewide effort to ensure 50% of Michigan manufacturers – or 6,200 businesses – are prepared to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies at some level by 2025. The initiative includes efforts to drive awareness on the importance of Industry 4.0 readiness and technical support to help small- to medium-sized manufacturers adopt Industry 4.0 technologies through a partnership with Automation Alley and the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC). Lenawee Now teamed up with this partnership to outreach to local companies with an event held September 27, 2023 at the Southern Michigan Center for Science & Industry. The event included live technology demonstrations and opportunities to speak directly with experts about how each innovation could help their facility. Attendees also learned about MMTC’s FREE Technology Opportunity Assessment and how it helps identify technologies that will provide maximum improvements and return on investment. After the employer portion of the event, SMCSI students were invited to join to learn about these advanced technologies and what kinds of job opportunities they can offer now and in the future.
