Chairman of the Board The mission of Lenawee Now is to attract new businesses, assist in the growth of established businesses, and support entrepreneurial endeavors in Lenawee County, thus resulting in an economically viable and vibrant region.

Throughout this past year, we witnessed tremendous levels of collaboration within our region. We worked closely with our neighboring counties to ensure that our region is ready for new and expanding businesses. We also worked together on minimizing the talent gap and creating a variety of business opportunities for startups, both of which are vital to the success of our area.

Since the establishment of Lenawee Now in 1916, there have been various ups and downs but we have always been ahead of the curve. Through the collaborative efforts of the Lenawee Now team, we can see the results throughout all of our communities.

Executive Director For Lenawee Now, 2018 will be remembered as the year of collaboration. The focus has been on building an entrepreneurial ecosystem, closing the talent gap, and strengthening a regional network. These collaborative efforts to make connections and create opportunities lead Lenawee Now toward success throughout the coming years.

Business Acceleration Team

Lenawee County has a rich entrepreneurial history of local companies that have grown into national corporations including Merillat Cabinetry, Tecumseh Products, Brazeway, and more. The current Entrepreneur Series provides catalysts for future corporations and small businesses.

Launch Lenawee

This six-month program provides students with a mentor, monthly classes, and networking events with community businesses.

Square One

The pitch contest selects finalists to share their business ideas, receive instant feedback, and have the opportunity to win a cash prize.

Business Acceleration Team

Adrian College and Siena Heights University interns work with new and existing Lenawee Now clients to develop key items needed to secure financing.

LION Fund

The Lenawee Investment Opportunity Network Fund (LION Fund) provides access to the necessary funding to start or expand a small business.

Adrian/Tecumseh SmartZone

A state-authorized and financially supported tax increment financial district that provides incentives and programs that support high-tech businesses.

Director of Entrepreneurial Services We have focused on building a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem in Lenawee County over the past two years. Services such as financial planning, research, and marketing are in place to support and enhance business growth in our communities with great success.

Align Playbook published

Grants USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant

Lenawee Now identified talent as the #1 economic development challenge within local communities, as well as a major factor in the retention and attraction of jobs in the county. Through this grant, Lenawee Now was able to develop and implement the Align talent system for Lenawee County.

2016-18: Region 9 Partnership Initiative Grant

Lenawee Now identified the need to create a regional consensus on the importance of talent on retention of jobs. Through this grant, the regional conference (Greater Ann Arbor Region Workforce Opportunity Workshop) focused on the region’s best practices in talent development and applying those to job retention.

2018-19: Region 9 Partnership Initiative Grant

Through the extensive efforts of the previous four years, Lenawee Now was awarded a grant to author a white paper summarizing the regional talent gaps, including stakeholder input on a business plan to fill these gaps.

Collaborate with Stakeholders to develop a consortium focused on Align - drive educational outcomes that meet employees’ needs

Programs Ag Career Day

The first annual Ag Career Day exposed 400 seventh grade students to a variety of agricultural careers at the Lenawee Intermediate School District’s Center for a Sustainable Future and the Hudson Dairy.

Manufacturing Day

400 students joined 20 local manufacturing companies to participate in tours and presentations from industry representatives.

Marshall Plan

The plan would provide $100 million to create or expand innovative talent programs throughout Michigan for in-demand occupations. A collaborative group applied for the grant to expand talent programs in Lenawee.

Human Capital

Lenawee Now received a Silver Excellence Award from the International Economic Development Council for Align’s efforts in closing the talent gap in Lenawee County.

The project was designed to educate and support students graduating from high school and give local businesses a new tool for attracting new employees.

Growth In Lenawee Flying Otter Winery

The Business Acceleration Team assisted the owners with developing pro formas to acquire financing.

Hoyden Creative

Secured USDA funding through Lenawee Now to assist with hiring additional employees.

Kirchhoff Automotive

The automotive parts manufacturer completed a $20 million dollar expansion that will add 21 jobs.

Lenawee Intergenerational Learning Academy

The first and second shift intergenerational day care was the first business to receive funding through the LION Fund.

Mark Prielipp Greenhouse & Mohr

Constructed a new 50,000 square-foot retail garden center and greenhouse utilizing new technologies to enhance the water, energy, and labor efficiencies as well provide a pleasant shopping atmosphere.

PlaneWave

The manufacturer of telescopes decided to establish its headquarters in the city of Adrian and is expected to generate a total capital investment of more than $9.4 million and create 54 high-tech jobs, resulting in a $400,000 Michigan Business Development Program performancebased grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Rice & Barley Taphouse

The Pan-Asian restaurant opened with assistance from the USDA loan program at Lenawee Now.

The Winery North of 12

The owners utilized the talents of the Business Acceleration Team to create a business plan and pro formas that assisted in securing financing.

Wacker Chemical

Lenawee Now worked with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Ann Arbor SPARK to retain the North American headquarters and research center in southeast Michigan.

Wet Noses Resort & Supplies

The luxurious overnight dog resort was the second business approved for funding through the LION Fund.
