Picadilly Basin, situated in the heart of Central Manchester, is a site that preserves peace and serenity in the middle of a busy city. The charismatic waterside frontage and heritage assets make it a distinctive site. The serene waterside is a mix-used site, it is occupied by permanent residents that live in the apartment buildings and temporary residents that visit on their narrowboats. It is also a trendy area filled with interesting cafes and other interesting commercial spaces. Adjacent to the site, is Manchester's main and major transport hub with exceptional transport connections.

Over the years, Manchester has seen a dramatic rise in the number of tourists visiting. With major attractions from football to new studios in media city, medical tourism was never a major attraction due to its high costs. However, in recent years tourists are on the lookout for top surgeons that they can trust.

This project will explore medical tourists and the spaces they occupy. When designing for medical tourists, there needs to be a detailed understanding in the way a space can affect a patient. Small factors can make a big impact on recovery time or even effect a patient's mental state. Details such as the colour of a space or the materials can change the way a patient feels in a space. Spaces are also made up of interactions, be they human, non-human, or discursive, is very actively shaped by, and shapes, aesthetic, cultural, historical, theoretical and technological conditions and events.

Attention should also be drawn to how the tourists will be connected to the city. It is imperative that they can easily access the city so they can easily explore. Medical tourists, however, considerably need attention as thought needs to be put in to how they can access the city safely. Factors such as wheelchairs and other handicaps need to be thought about on the busy streets of Manchester.

Two separate places on the site can be proposed on the site. A private space that is only available to the medical tourists, this will contain calm and sanitary accommodation, and safe areas to rest. A public zone where the tourists and locals can interact and appreciate Piccadilly Basin's natural beauty.

Both of the areas will promote comfort and serenity to not only the medical tourists but to visiting locals.

Below is a bubble diagram showing the spaces that could be introduced. The main area is the accommodation, having two separate spaces means that people with different medical needs can be separated. The accommodation will be surrounded by a clinic/pharmacy for the tourists, a relaxing cafĂŠ that is also open to the public, an area that is dedicated to looking after the local wildlife and could also be an animal shelter. There is also going to be the introduction of a new water area, this is not only for scenic purposes, it is to bring back some of the history of the site. Finally, there is the landscape area that will allow the public to interact with the tourists, it is also to help improve the bad air quality in the area and help local wildlife.Â

ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHITECTURE TECHNOLOGY RIBA STAGES 1,2 I then took my Design Studio 3 project further and explored how to make it more sustainable through smart facades.

When reviewing the initial design, I firstly approached the building materials. The building was made up of reinforced concrete, this made the structure of the building along with its internal structure and facade. The reason for selecting this specific material was due to it’s aesthetics, strength and ease of construction.

As the function of the building is to provide a place of healing for cosmetic surgery patients, concrete provides a neutral and relaxed atmosphere through it’s raw aura.

Leaving the concrete exposed it allows it to perform as a thermal mass, this means the walls and slabs absorb the sun's rays during the day and slowly release the heat generated during the night.

Looking at the research, it has become clear that there is a dilemma about the increasing temperatures due to global warming and how architects and designers are going to tackle this when designing buildings.

According to the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, the summer daily maximum temperature is estimated to double, resulting in temperatures as high as 30°C. This means that there needs to be a way to block or limit the sun rays entering buildings.

An approach to solar shading is through the use of “smart facades”. “The intelligent features in a facade require integration of responsive dynamic capabilities, which allow for changes in the facade’s configuration based on daily and seasonal stimuli, and considering the surrounding environmental context in order to reduce the energy consumption and increase the building efficiency.”(M. Al Thobaiti, 2014) I firstly looked at how light can be filtered, I looked at simple objects around me that had a simple filtering mechanism. I observed items ranging from simple window blinds to kitchenware. I happened to come across a salt shaker that had a manual rotating plastic mechanism to filter the amount of salt that escapes from the container. I was intrigued by this mechanism and decided to test it against light to see if it hd similar filtering properties.

Manchester is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the UK and has a long history of migration from different parts of the nation, mainland Europe and the rest of world.

During the Industrial Revolution, large numbers of Irish migrants arrived in Manchester, followed by European Jews fleeing persecution in the 18th and 19th century. Arrivals from the Caribbean and South Asia followed World War II, preceding waves of migrants from former colonies in Africa, such as Asians from Uganda and Kenya. In the early 2000s, many skilled workers from Europe, India and West Africa were attracted by employment opportunities in Manchester – as IT professionals, for example, helping transform the city into a tech hub for the north of England. Many were also drawn to the health and care sector: many nurses come from countries outside the EU, making a vital contribution to the NHS. These arrivals have transformed the economy, the culture and the social landscape of the region through their businesses, diverse cultural communities and the mixing of global cultures. This can be seen from Manchester’s “curry mile” in Rusholme, its Chinatown, the vibrant Northern Quarter, the “gay village” along Canal St, and many East European delicatessens. The contributions of migrants to the region needs to be recognised, not just in terms of their labour but also the wider benefits. For example, one Indian nurse’s efforts through working with hospitals and communities has boosted organ donation among South Asians in the region. Mayfield was site located next to Manchester’s main station, Piccadilly Station and one of the busiest roads in Manchester, Mancunian way. However the site was almost neglected. I felt that Manchester need to celebrate their multiculturalism with a cultural centre. One of the first things I wanted to include was areas where citizens can taste cuisines from all around the world. I decided to make a multi-storey restraint that serves food through dumbwaiters, exposing the public to the many different kinds of foods travelling up and down them. I also wanted to create spaces that can be used for a variety of uses, such as art classes, galleries, poetry, theatre etc. I thought that small pods within a building would be a good idea to do this. I finally have the idea of bridges that are in the shapes of letters from different languages, connecting the cultures once viewed from the top. I hope that this design encourages multiculturalism to the site along with complementing it.
