UncommonGoods - New Products Find Anything But Ordinary Mahogany And Aspen Wooden Cuff

This chic, wooden cuff bracelet shows that style and sustainability can grow side by side. The interlocking bands get their distinct colors not from artificial dyes or paint, but from the varieties of wood that are used: Mahogany and Aspen. The bracelets flex to slide onto your wrist, and naturally relax with the warmth of your body to provide the perfect fit. The wood is finished with three coats of tung oil, and given a protective coat of carnauba wax. Designer Henry Wischusen uses woven bands of veneer both for their striking beauty and because the thin slices are a more efficient use of a natural resource than carving away at a block of wood. Handmade in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. Posted: January 26, 2013, 12:00 am

arborist. He also happens to live in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District, and he has discovered how to combine his loves of nature and city life in his extraordinary wooden skyline panels. Each panel captures a select cityscape in dark hued, solid walnut. Marcoullier drafts the designs digitally then mills each city's iconic skyline into the wood with a router. Finally, he sands and stains each piece by hand. The areas representing the city retain the unaltered color of the wood, while the darker areas of the sky overhead are achieved with wash of natural teak oil stain. A hole is pierced in the back of each panel for easy mounting. Handcrafted from sustainably harvested wood in San Francisco, California. Click here to see all available city skylines. Recycled Steel Wine Rest

Born in the Rocky Mountains and raised in the backcountry of Alaska, blacksmith Alexandra Paliwoda expresses her passion for wild places with her hand-forged ironwork. To make this eye-catching piece, rough-hewn recycled steel is made malleable and hammered into a curvaceous ribbon that artfully balances that special wine bottle with a sculptural swoop. In addition to giving your vino a rustic, yet refined touch for special dinners and everyday display, the rest's pierced upsweep is counterbalanced by the scroll-shaped tail to cradle your reds and whites at an angle ideal for preserving their flavor. The hammered finish is sealed with an environmentally friendly clear coat, and the cradle's base is polished for a non-scratch surface. Handmade in Three Forks, Montana. Horseshoe Heart Trivet

A horseshoe is both an iconic good luck symbol, and a reminder of a simpler, traditional way of life. This horseshoe is embraced by a band of metal that reaches up to form a heart with a curlicue flourish. The fluid form of the heavy metal comes from the blacksmithing talents of Alexandra Paliwoda, who applies her skills to both shoeing horses and decorative work. The piece is itself a blending of the practical and the beautiful: it functions as a sturdy trivet, protecting your wooden surfaces and countertops, but when not in use it is elegant enough to display on the walls for a touch of rustic romance. Idle hands are now a multi-dimensional playground. They pick up this seemingly-innocent cube from the shelf or desktop where it's been resting. But then the cube begins to shift—its angles flexing, its sides stretching. Those hands continually press the cube into new forms. Sure, you could set it back down—but why? You can explore the principles of perspective, as the cube becomes flat while still looking three dimensional. You can visit new realms of mathematics: you are, after all, playing with a geometric solid called a "parallelepiped." This mind-bending gadget from the ingenious mind of designer Ben Hopson is made of 72 individually moving pieces, all working together in fluid motion. Artichoke Heart Vase Pair

Sculptress Melanie Mckenney finds her inspiration in nature窶馬ot the typical flowers and trees, but in the abundant textures and colors of ordinary fruits and vegetables. In this two-part, earthenware vase set she has captured the quirky shape of this peel-apart vegetable in delicious detail. She forms a slip-cast mold from an actual artichoke to recreate the overlapping petals that make up its exterior. Leaving no detail to the imagination, the artist halves the choke and casts its fascinating interior, from its outermost leaves to its coveted heart, in intricate detail. She finishes off her delicious creation with food-safe, non-toxic glazes that capture the rich greens and deep purples found in the edible original. More than just a charming ode to one of nature's most sculptural creations, each piece's hollowed top holds a freshly-picked bloom. Home Sweet Home Shadowbox

During the 1970s, while pregnant with her daughter, Sara, Deborah Fell created her own quilting business, inspired greatly by the quilting movement whose participants recognized that quilts could display abstract art much like the paintings that were popular at the time. As a child, Sara Sandler-Greisberg grew up immersed in her mother's craft, and she watched with wonder as reams of vivid, reclaimed fabrics were snipped and stitched into snuggly works of art. When Sara started a family of her own, she teamed up with her mother to bring the tradition of quilting and handicraft to a new generation of crafters—her children. The mother-daughter duo's darling pieces of home dÊcor incorporate endearing touches like frayed edges and zigzag stitch work to give each piece a bit of folk art charm and to pay homage to a homey aesthetic fashioned by earlier generations of cloth artists. Using various bold scraps printed with rosy gingham, floral patterns, and electric spots, as well as sweet appliques and lively embroidery and stitching, this warm-hearted piece represents the comforts of home. A sweet portrait of life's simplest pleasures, this lovingly handmade art piece adds warmth and cheer to bedrooms, nurseries, and children's playrooms. Concrete Salt And Pepper Shakers

Ingeniously designed and plenty functional, this pair of handsome salt and pepper shakers bring sleek, industrial style to any tabletop. Crafted from a ceramic-like advanced concrete mix that's partially composed of recycled granite and marble dust sourced from the countertop and tile industry, each cork-based cellar is hand-molded and burnished before being treated with a double coat of food-safe linseed oil. And unlike S&P shakers of a more delicate composition, these beauties become even more durable with age while also developing a unique patina as the cement mixture continues to cure. The silicone-ringed toppers fit snugly into the base of each cellar – you needn't remove them unless refilling – and adjustable apertures signified by embossed "+" and "-" signs allow users to evenly control the distribution of the salt and pepper. The base has rounded contours that are comfortable in the hands, and open space beneath the metal platter to minimize its weight. The Amplifiear

"Turn it up!" "I can't—that's as high as it goes." Sound familiar? The iPad may provide us with a crisp, high-quality view of our favorite flicks and shows, and while its sleek screen and lightweight body make it ideal for lounging, the audio unfortunately takes a back seat to the visuals. When docked, placed on a table, or nestled in our laps to share a screening with friends, the iPad's rear-facing speaker system aims the audio away from the viewers, and as a result, those in front of the screen are left straining to hear the juicy dialogue while those in the room are blasted with unwanted spoilers. With this problem on his mind and a coffee in his hand, Brooklyn-based designer Evan Clabots' innocent fiddling with his cup's lid and his iPad serendipitously resulted in an acoustic epiphany that led to the creation of the Amplifiear. Using a shape reminiscent of a flattened gramophone, this plug- and battery-free sound projector simply clips onto the corner of any iPad to reflect and project the sound emitted from the speaker forward, towards the user. In addition to adding an asymmetrical pop of personality to your monochrome iPad, this simple, ear-shaped sound projector can increase your iPad's volume up to 10 dB, making it ideal for those viewings with friends that are made all the better with audience commentary and out-of-control giggles. Made in the USA. Comes with three different EVA foam pads that are made to fit iPads and cases of varying thicknesses. Made of 100% recyclable ABS plastic. Unbleached paperboard packaging obtained from certified sustainable tree farms. Plastic cover used in packaging made of 100% recyclable PETE. Posted: December 8, 2012, 8:11 pm

Stacking Line Necklace

In the eyes of jewelry designer Ronni Kappos, German glass beads manufactured meticulously prior to World War II possess a quality unmatched by contemporary makers. The artist's tremendous devotion to these vintage remnants, their history, and their striking, saturated shades, informs all of her daring, geometric compositions, such as this stacked necklace. To give this piece a daring and unconventional touch, the delicate nylon thread "chain" is punctuated by a single, bloom of made up of yellow and black beads. Ronni treasures the characteristic variations in the beads' color and shape, and as a result, each one-of-a-kind wearable sculpture is limited to just a few iterations. Handmade in California. Community Game

What make a house a home and what makes a town a community? This imaginative board game by illustrator Saxton Freymann gives kids and grownups alike the opportunity to explore these ideas through creative urban planning and play. In order from youngest to oldest, players connect their homes with important establishments, including the

hospital, the circus, the school, a factory, and other businesses that add value to their village. After each player selects a location tile, he or she explains why this spot will be important to the people who live in this budding community. By selecting these tiles, children are given the responsibility of deciding what type of community they'll invent. Will their community boast a library, a school, and a recycling center? Or will it include a museum, theater, and a park? Once all of the location tiles have been drawn, players can test their spatial perception by connecting businesses with their home using tiles illustrated with a wandering yellow road. When all of the places are connected, players can take turns telling stories about their newly built settlement and how all of the places within it bring their miniature community together. Dance And Embrace Spirit Candles

Hidden inside these inconspicuous-looking white pillar candles is a bronze sculpture that's only revealed as the wax burns away. While it may be tempting to hold a marathon candle burning session for a more immediate reveal, the candles' mysterious charm revolves around not being antsy: slowing down to reflect and to savor each moment as the candle burns gradually and the figure, slowly but surely, emerges from its waxy encasement. Available with either Dance or Embrace sculptures, the unscented candles, formed by a lost-wax casting process, make for an illuminating gift in celebration of a wedding, engagement, anniversary, or other milestone. And while the sculptures themselves may become blackened by smoke and flames as the candle burns around them, they can later be polished and kept as keepsakes once the wick reaches its end. Generative Jigsaw Puzzle

Design duo Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg of Nervous System give the classic jigsaw puzzle a 21st-century revamp by completely re-imagining this old-school form of entertainment as an interactive contemporary art piece. Combining the pair's passion for nature, science, technology, and the puzzles they pieced together as children, this design-inclined jigsaw uses custom software that simulates dendritic solidification, a complex crystal growth process that resembles the formation of snowflakes. A laser cutter then translates these one-off, organic patterns into a unique set of interlocking plywood pieces whose amoebic shapes can be just as challenging to connect as any 1,000-piece classic. Finding a kindred spirit in generative artist Jonathan McCabe, the team applies his diffused landscapes to their jigsaws giving challenge seekers a one-of-a-kind contemporary piece of art to discover. Once assembled, you can display your artful accomplishment with pride, or you can break it up and save it for the next time you'd like to brighten up a rainy day. Designed, printed, and cut in Somerville, Massachusetts. Posted: November 30, 2012, 11:41 pm

The Owl Whoo Knew Too Much - Seth Anderson

43 / 44

Seth Anderson's curious critters were born from day-dreamy doodles in the marginalia of his school notebooks. Without focusing on the pages in front of him, Seth would press pen to paper letting instinct and memory guide his hand. As he made the transition to adulthood, Seth abandoned these innocent drawings for a successful career in architecture. His scribbles lay fallow for 15 years until his sons unearthed them and happily decorated their bedroom walls with their dad's rediscovered doodles. Seth's reimagined series of his amateur explorations in drawing offer the artist, his sons, and art appreciators of all ages a dynamic connection to the past. This charming, giclĂŠe print and matching book let kids and grown-ups in on what the owl sees when the lights go out without pulling an all-nighter! Give this night bird the spotlight in a bedroom, nursery, or playroom, or introduce him to Seth Anderson's other, quirky creatures to create a personalized sanctuary. ? All prints are fine art giclee prints printed with archival pigments on archival matte paper, framed with acid-free paper mats and framed with black poplar wood. The original drawing was drawn with pen and pencil on paper. Made in the USA. Posted: November 30, 2012, 10:32 pm
