Why We Give Why do we give? For each of us it’s different. Was giving ingrained in

us as children? Something we learned from our parents? Our religion? Our friends? Is giving part of being an American, or belonging to the community of Kailua? For each of us, it’s a wholly unique story. I’ve learned that money is a very personal thing for many of us. To give money away, as well as asking others to do so, is perceived as a heavy task.

Why do I give? My story is one of “giving back.” Once every few years my family and I travel back to my father’s home town of Filettino, Italy. There I share the story with my kids about my grandfather, their great grandfather (Nonno in Italian), who would wake up early each morning, hike into the Abruzzi mountains, cut down trees, split wood, and deliver firewood to the townspeople on the backs of three horses. The problem was, no one had any money to pay Nonno Angelo, but that was OK. Nonno Angelo always delivered. It is a story of how we all need each other.

For Tara, a different story of giving. Tara was raised in Anchorage, Alaska to a family that shared a relentless enthusiasm to give back to their community.

Serving on neighborhood boards, as publically elected officials, on school committees, as community volunteers, with Anchorage Parks and Alaska United Way... the list is far too long. Tara’s family continues to be recognized for their community involvement going back to Statehood.

A generation later we are fortunate to be in a position to give back. Through Fiver Children’s Foundation, Make a Wish Hawaii, Honolulu Zoo, Awesome Foundation and of course, Le Jardin Academy, we exercise our gratitude by donating time and money, to the extent we can, towards opportunities to change a young person’s life or the community for the better.

The late Henry A. Rosso, who dedicated 50 years of his life to giving, said that fundraising “isn’t a simple process of begging, it’s a process of transferring the importance of the project to the donor.”

Do you remember the movie Dead Poets Society? I certainly do. I enjoyed it when it came out in 1989, and continue to love it today. Robin Williams plays newbie English teacher James Keating at the fictional Welton Academy, a stodgy, New England blue-blood school for boys. From having the students literally rip out the “How to Read Poetry” pages from their books, to having them stand on their desks to find a different view, to the courtyard

exercise of “learn to march to your own beat,” to telling them “When you read, don’t just consider what the author thinks, consider what you think,” as well as , “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” Throughout the film, Mr. Keating challenges his pupils, much to the dismay of the school administration, to discover the joy of learning, to be critical thinkers, to find their unique voice, to question the known knowns, and to pursue extraordinary lives.

Now, imagine a school where all the teachers and all the administrators embrace a curriculum where students are encouraged to be creative, critical thinkers. Imagine a school developing risk takers, open minded communicators, reflective learners, effective presenters of their ideas and world citizens. Dead Poets Society, to me, is a story of an IB teacher five decades ahead of his time.

Parents, grandparents, Alumni, and friends of Le Jardin Academy, I implore you to consider how special this gem of a school is, and how fortunate we and our students are to have it. LJA’s Annual Fund is invaluable in that it provides funds allowing the school grounds, classrooms, technology, athletics, scholarships et al., to remain at the high level of excellence our dedicated teachers and students require and deserve.

Tara and I want to thank all the 2014-2015 Ambassadors, Leah Freitas of the Development office, and Headmaster Lou Young for their tireless efforts.

Most of all we humbly and graciously thank all of our contributors to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. Our collective efforts have led to a huge success!

Finally, Alec and Susan Christensen have generously stepped up to act as Co-Chairs for next year’s campaign. I hope you join us in supporting them in their role. Let’s all connect to our unique “why we give” story and do our best to make the LJA Annual Fund 2015-2016 a smashing success as well!

Together we did it! to five years ago, three years ago or even one year ago. To really look at where we started with the Annual Fund to the progress seen in 2015 is, without a doubt, INSPIRING. So what did we accomplish this past year?

The Annual Fund has provided essential support for Le Jardin Academy, supplementing tuition to fund over $1Million in tuition assistance, much needed facility improvements and competitive salaries and professional development for our faculty. In addition to supporting the key functions of the school, the Annual Fund has impacted several special projects that enhance LJA’s incredible programs. New air-conditioning in the C building will keep our Kindergarteners cool, K through 5th graders will see their visions of a playground come to life with a new play structure on the Lower School playground, and all students will benefit from increased connectivity with a school-wide wireless upgrade. To reduce energy consumption in paradise is paramount when living on an island, and Le Jardin is proud to be implementing a 300kwh solar photovoltaic system, thanks in part to the Annual Fund.
