'Floating' spa opens in Australia

Sol Elements, a bathhouse with a design that makes the building appear to float on a lake, has opened in the 330-acre Tamborine Mountain Glades in Queensland, Australia.

Owned and conceived by husband and wife partnership

Russell and Shae Raven, the bathhouse occupies a two-acre plot in subtropical rainforest.

Russell told Spa Business, “We want to provide a space for everyone who needs a breath of fresh air, a moment to themselves or with a loved one and a place to quiet the mind or meet like-minded folk.”

The project took four years to complete in-house, with the assistance of designers from Design Artisan Co.

The spa has two treatment rooms, both of which have direct

views of the lake, with another due to open in the near future.

Six bespoke rituals and treatments have been developed by Shae Raven in partnership with skincare provider Synthesis Organics.

There are also two secluded private mineral bathing suites.

The communal bathing area has a capacity of 30 guests at a time, with two Float Caves, three outdoor magnesium thermal pools and two cold plunges. There's also a Himalayan salt sauna, botanical steamroom and stone sauna.

Vanessa Megan develops gold, caviar and champagne ritual for Alba Thermal Springs Spa

Alba Thermal Springs and Spa in the Australian state of Victoria has launched a decadent body ritual by natural skincare brand Vanessa Megan to complement the facility’s bathing experience.

The two-hour signature treatment, exclusive to Alba, is called The Jewel.

Vanessa Megan created the therapy using her clean skincare products, which were developed after her best friend advised her, in 2001, “You should never put anything on your skin that you couldn’t eat.”

The therapy starts with a facial using the products with 24kt gold and finger lime caviar. This is said to stimulate cell renewal, slow collagen depletion and increase the skin’s

The treatment is combined with access to the spa lounge, where guests will be offered Veuve Clicquot champagne and beluga caviar.

Guests will also have a full day’s access to the spa’s 31 geothermal bathing pools.

The experience is designed for couples and although it will be available all year, it will only be on offer to a limited number of guests each month. The price for the whole experience is AU$800 (US$524, €488, £389) per person.

The destination spa opened in 2022 in 15 hectares of landscaped native gardens.

Many retreats and spas are designed around a narrow vision of who gets to access that healing

Designing for inclusion

Making wellness spaces more accessible for every body and mind

can’t tell you how many retreats I’ve swiped past because they weren’t designed for someone like me. I’m autistic, deeply sensitive and a two-time cancer survivor. I live with chronic pain and energy-limiting conditions, which means I rely on mobility aids, including Gloria, my power chair, to support me day-to-day. Here in the UK, 11 million people live with a limiting long-term illness or disability. On top of that, an estimated 1 in 5 – around 13 million – are neurodivergent, meaning they experience

the world in ways not often accounted for in traditional wellness settings. Neurodivergence includes autism, ADHD, dyspraxia and more.

Despite these numbers, retreat marketing imagery is often able-bodied, while itineraries are full and fast-paced. It’s everything but a retreat.

The wellness industry has become a global force, offering promises of healing, balance and belonging, but many retreats and spas are designed around a narrow vision of who gets to access that healing. Too often, that vision excludes disabled guests and neurodivergent people.

Many of them are drawn to retreats as a refuge from overstimulation, burnout and social overwhelm but their needs aren't often met.

Neuroinclusive design

‘Calm’ isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. Some guests may be hypersensitive to scent, sound or lighting. A “relaxing” scent like lavender or burning palo santo might soothe one person and overwhelm another. Offer low scent or fragrance-free areas. Use adjustable lighting

and provide clear, sensory descriptions of each space or activity in advance, especially treatments that involve strong smells, sounds or textures.

Neurodivergent guests often benefit from clear expectations. Offer visual guides, simple written overviews or short video walk-throughs of your space. Allow guests to choose a quiet check-in option, or request minimal social interaction.

Avoid chaotic signage, loud communal spaces or activities that rely heavily on verbal processing. Offer small, quiet spaces for solo regulation – not everyone decompresses in a group sauna or a shared mealtime. Let guests know it’s perfectly valid to sleep through early or late afternoon sessions, request in-room meals or opt out of group activities without explanation.

Experience-sensitive approach

Consider offering access to one-to-one therapeutic support for those who may need space-holding or co-regulation during emotionally heightened moments. Train your team to meet differences with compassion and

curiosity and to offer empathy, not exclusion. This means teaching staff to learn about sensory needs, communication differences, emotional and cognitive processing. Having a trained practitioner who is neurodivergentaffirming on hand can be the difference between emotional safety and silent struggle.

When we design with true inclusion in mind, retreats stop being a luxury reserved for the few and become a lifeline for the many who need them most. ●

An ancient Canadian glacier feeds the new Basin Glacial Waters complex set within the heart of Ban National Park, a UNESCO heritage site

Anew bathing experience called Basin Glacial Waters has opened at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. It is said to set a benchmark for wellness experiences for the brand and beyond.

The facility’s concept was two decades in the making and it takes its name from its setting: Lake Louise is a natural basin fed by a direct glacial water source, the Victoria Glacier.

Designed by internationally recognised architect Matteo Thun, the 1,719sq m bathing complex is a modern interpretation of longestablished wellness practices, such as Nordic sauna culture, reimagined with minimalistic grandeur.

The bathhouse serves the 539key hotel, which is owned by Oxford Properties and a capital partner.

The new bathhouse has been developed as part of a CA$130 million (US$95 million, €82 million,

£71 million) transformation across the property, which has included the renovation of guest rooms and a redesign of the Fairmont Spa.

Emma Darby, global VP of spa and wellness for Fairmont, said: “Basin Glacial Waters is unrivalled and its world-renowned landscape was an intentional choice for the Group.”
