Staycations set to boost UK Tourism Industry

An increasing number of Brits are opting for a getaway closer to home, with 57% of holidaymakers staying on home soil this summer. Figures from Visit Britain showed a 5% increase in the number of domestic holidays in Britain last year, compared to the same period in 2016.

Industry experts link the trend with post-Brexit anxiety among Britons, with the weakness of the pound and uncertainty of the future playing a major role. This growing demand inevitably creates huge opportunities for holiday providers across the UK, with the staycation craze set to boost the UK economy by £31bn.

The general travel trend towards experience-based holidays is in full force with staycations, with increasing demand for unique accommodation like tree tents and underground bunkers. Secluded and unspoiled destinations are also desired, with places like Snowdonia and Skye increasing in popularity.

Despite these trends, a traditional trip to the seaside remains the firm favorite, with 55% of British holiday-makers heading to the UK’s beaches this year. Cornwall has remained Britain’s top holiday destination for the last 4 years. The UK’s rural landscape is the second most popular destination, with a third of adults taking a rural break this year. Top destinations for these holiday-makers include the Cotswolds, the Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands.

Visit England Director, Patricia Yates highlights that “the huge range of quality destinations and tourism products on offer across the country, and the ease, convenience, and certainty of budgeting for a domestic trip, are all contributing to people choosing to take more holidays at home”.

PVC or Paint? Why murals are the ‘green’ option There is a good reason why many of the worlds most influential companies are employing murals in their interiors (or exteriors!). Never before has ambience been so important, with the increasing trend for posting photographs of everything and anything, suddenly how where we work/eat/drink/live looks, is of the utmost concern. There are even lists of the most Instagrammable restaurants in some cities and most include some kind of wall art, simple white colored walls are no longer what staff and customers expect.

So is it is not surprising that wall murals have been growing in popularity recently; a picture as they say, paints a thousand words. The simple fact is that large scale wall art attracts attention, unlike any other art form, and therefore, attracts employees and customers.

One of the best things about wall murals is that it gives your company a unique look, as it is made according to your exact requirements. A unique look makes your business stand out from the rest, and makes it more likely to stick in the mind of a potential customer. A wall mural allows you to create the atmosphere you want in your business, which will suit your personality, your business’ decor and of course, your budget.

Whether we are talking printed wall murals that are applied like a wallpaper or decals, or a hand painted piece of art, the effects on your staff and customers will be very similar, so it is worth exploring how they differ and which is best for what situation.

1. Cost.

With printed murals, there are a few things to think about; the cost of the image, the printing/shipping and the cost of having it applied to the wall. With painted it is a one cost, which is helpful with budgeting. Taking all things into consideration, the difference in cost between printed wall murals and painted is negligible, so as to not be a differentiator.

2. Surface.

Printed wall murals need to be applied to a flat well prepared surface, painted murals can be applied to bare brick, breeze block, wood, metal and other uneven surfaces. Painted murals can be made completely waterproof, so are better suited to areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

3. Environment.

This is becoming increasingly important.

Why would you want to have large amounts of PVC stuck to your walls, when you can do exactly the same with paint? Most stickers (in fact ALL stickers that I have found in the UK), are essentially plastic and will be around long after you and I have gone. With painting you have control. My standard paints are low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound, the ‘nasty’ in paint) ie. 15g per litre. I can also offer my clients mineral paints that have very low VOCs ie. 1g per litre at an additional cost. These paints adhere in a different way, are breathable and great for those suffering with allergies. Drop me a line if you would like to know more about these paints. Worth thinking about what messages your choice of decoration sends to your clients and staff.

4. Longevity.

This depends on the environment, many restaurants shy away from certain printed materials that contain solvents, but in short, in most commercial environments, there is little difference in how the murals will wear. It is worth bearing in mind that if a printed mural is damaged, it will have to be replaced, whilst a painted mural can be repaired. Many of the public areas murals that Charlotte Designs

produces are treated with a protector which makes them fairly indestructible.

5. Flexibility.

This is one area where the painted mural has a huge advantage. The main issue with printed murals, once they are printed, that is it. If it doesn’t quite fit, or the client changes their mind, there is no other option than starting again. However, painted murals can be changed and added to right up to the last minute. Murals have been reversed at the last minute, new elements added or removed and even colour schemes changed.

6. Timescales.

The process of producing printed and painted murals is quite different. The design process is quite similar, however, mural printing will depend on how busy the printer is. Large scale painting of a mural will certainly take longer that installing a printed mural once it is printed. So all in all, printed murals may have a quicker turn around than painted ones.

7. Overall look and feel.

Whilst there are always practicalities to take into consideration when selecting the right product for the project, the overriding factor will be, how does it look? Both photographs and painted art have their unique qualities, the printed wall mural can be reproduced exactly if continuity is required. With painted murals, you are getting a genuine, original piece of art.
