University of Kent. 2018-2019 (13 months) This Master is aimed at professionals from around the world interested in sustainability in the built environment, including urban architects, engineers, geographers, surveyors, historians, and designers. This interdisciplinary approach master blurs the traditional boundaries between arts and sciences, research and practice. The overall objective of the program is to provide participants with a systematic understanding of the core and advanced areas of sustainable design.

SEVEN - Project realized with the studio PRS Architectes (Lausanne).

- Completed in 2016 - 3rd Prize for the contest: “Concours de projets d’architecture pour la réalisation de logements au quartier du Désert, Lausanne”

SEVEN was conceived as a residential project in Lausanne, Switzerland. One of the biggest challenges was to face the great slope that arose in the intervention area. In addition, the regulations greatly restricted the actions so the project was highly conditioned from the begining.

This project is made up of 98 homes distributed in twelve different typologies. All of them have two elecations, either transversal or in a corner, offering different lighting, visual and privacy conditions. The typologies are developed in order to maximize the range of activities, allowing the redistribution of functions over time.

For the conservation, of natural resources, local materials are predominant, in addition to the use of sustainable materials such as recycled concrete. The materials used are free of pollutants and solvents, thus avoiding possible damage to the health of residents.

The enclosure is perfectly insulated and it has a great ventilation system that guarantees hygiene and eliminates condensation.

The intervention looks for minimizing the environmental impact using passive and energy saving techniques. During ventilation it uses heat recovery systems, which helps the space conditioning. In summer time, the building uses night ventilation to cool the internal spaces and prevent overheating. Also, the windows used are threelayer glazing, reducing the thermal exchange between the interior and exterior.

The sun plays a fundamental role since solar radiation is used to heat the inside. In addition, this building has photovoltaic and solar panels for the production of electricity and hot water in a sustainable way.

The rainwater is also recovered, for bathrooms and garden irrigation.

NATURAN BIZI - Project realized with the architectural studio CronosLAB (Madrid).

- Completed in 2017

Naturan Bizi is a new housing proposal in Arechavaleta made up of 68 south-facing officially protected houses, enjoying the views of the Vitoria Mountains. It also has two common spaces which are related with the apartments to achieve a greater community. The outdoor areas acquire great importance for for all the occupants of the complex improving their life style.

This residential proposal is made up of six different typologies, varying from two-bedroom to four-bedroom apartments. Each typology is adapted to different types of resident.

It is a project developed to achieve high energy efficiency, obtaining an A energy rating. The project has been developed following different low-efficient techniques in order to reduce its energy consumption; it should be highlighted the orientation analysis: All the apartments are south-oriented with cross ventilation.

The elevations implemented are projected to save energy. There are two completly different faรงades: The north elevation is made to keep the heat inside, using small gaps and dark colors. On the other side, the south one is a double-skin trasparent elevation in order to take advantage of the solar energy: heat and light.

North faรงade: It is composed by metal sandwich panels: Thermal Polyurethane panels coated by a metallic finishing for covering the cold elevations.

South faรงade: It is composed by Polycarbonate: It is a combination of compact and celullar Polycarbonate.

Solar instalation: Solar panels have been placed on building roofs for heating sanitary water and for the heating system.

They take advantage of the solar radiation through the use of heat exchangers.

SUMMER Day: Natural cross ventilation and protection against excessive solar radiation.

1. Greenhouse: The greenhouse regulates the heat input. On the one hand, it limits direct solar input, on the other, it allows a constant air flow through natural cross ventilation by keeping both skins open.

Night: Taking advantage of mild night temperatures: ventilation and air renewal.

External skin: open - Shade curtains: open Internal skin: semi-closed - Thermal curtains: semiclosed.

2. Thermal curtains: The external curtains are made of reflective material; the solar radiation bounce off and it allows shade on hot days.

3. North faรงade: The gaps in the north facade allow, due to their location, optimal cross ventilation. Their small size minimize the entry of excessive heat.

1. Greenhouse: The greenhouse is completely south oriented. It is the main passive insulation system which acts as a thermal cushion due to the greenhouse effect.

2. Thermal curtains: They complement the greenhouse performance.

The external ones serve to provide shade while the interiors retain heat. They open or close depending on the thermal needs.

3. Radiant floor: The heating system is carried out using radiant heating, this significantly improves comfort level compared to the usual systems.

SUSTAINABLE AQUATIC CENTRE Sustainable Design Project - Sustainable Design Final Project - Master in Architecture and Sustainable Environment (MASE)-MSC - Completed in 2019

The objective of this project is to create an aquatic center linked to the University of Kent Sports Center. The proposal is based on sustainable design, incorporating low or zero energy consumption technologies.

The center incorporates an eight-lane Olympic pool, 50m long, as well as an outdoor leisure pool. In addition, this complex incorporates formation and training areas for swimmers, as well as areas for coaches. On the other hand, the center also has a Spa area and a large garden.

The intervention area is a green area in which there are hardly any interventions, so it is essential to carry out a preliminary study so that this project affects the natural environment as little as possible.

This project seeks to preserve the environement so that the old trees are preserved, while eliminating the least possible number of young trees.

CUATRO CAMINOS: OPEN SPACE Reopening the old Metro garages - Final Master’s Project (PFC) - Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM) - Completed in 2018

The history of the old Cuatro Caminos metro garages begins with the history of the metro. They emerged as a dark, working space, where the male figure was the main character.

They began as small ships that increased in size as the metro increased, becoming a monumental point of reference in the city of Madrid.

Currently, it is a plot of more than 34,000 m², disused and in a state of ruin, within a neighborhood as dense as Cuatro Caminos, where large public spaces are scarce. For this reason, I decide to return this area of land to the residents of the neighborhood, giving it a second life and creating a great public space.

The project begins with clear intentions: - Open and communicate this space with the rest of the neighborhood.

- Create a large public space - To restore the monumentality to the garages.

The final result is a composition of new and restored elements, where the old train tracks is the pentagram that orders them.

Interior spaces include an auditorium, reading rooms and public workshops, as well as large greenhouses. There is also an office area with its own work areas.

From Avenida de la Reina Victoria, you can see a large hard square that serves as access. It is gradually transforming until it is, at the southern end of the plot, a green leisure park where vegetation is the protagonist.

That’s how the Cuatro Caminos garages are reopened: creating a great green public leisure space, where all residents are welcome.

STACKING IN SIERRA NEVADA - 5th year Project - Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM) - Completed in 2016

Stacking in Sierra Nevada is a project that seeks to develop a High Performance Sports Center at height. The aim of this center is to improve and complement the existing facilities, since it is a perfect location for this: both for the height and for the environment in which it is located.

The project consists of the stacking of self-supporting “boxes” in which the program is distributed according to its use.

Within the users routes, it is worth highlighting the clear distinction between private and public areas: the most private areas are for athletes, coaches and staff, where the training areas and the residence area stand out. There are also public spaces which are for all those who are going to enjoy a sporting event.

Access is done through the footbridge which is 42 m high from the base of the building. Here is the reception that distributes the different routes: upwards is the residence and downwards the swimming pool and the training areas.

In order to choose the specific location, a sunlight, orientation, accessibility, rainfall, inclination and visual study was carried out in six different areas around Veleta peak. When selecting the site, the orientation, sunlight and visual conditions were prioritized, resulting in the southern slope of the Veleta peak at 3,100 m high, orienting the complex towards the southeast.

PARQUE MĂ“VIL

Rehabilitation of a complet block - 4rd year Project - Universidad PolitĂŠcnica de Madrid (ETSAM) - Completed in 2014

This project consists of a block rehabilitation in the center of Madrid. It is an abandoned space in the middle of a big city, so it is interesting to give it a second life.

Parque MĂłvil was built in 1935 as a space to fix and store official cars; in addition, a residential space for workers was created.

This project proposes to maintain the automotive character of this space, renewing it towards a more sustainable concept of vehicles.

It was decided to create a green point for recharging electric cars, maintaining the main structures of the origial space. In addition, coworking spaces and environmental and sustainability sensitization spaces are incorporated.

On the other hand, existing apartments are adapted, maintaining the original structure and adding new common spaces.

In addition, micro-industries are added to the houses that are in good condition, improving and promoting local and therefore more sustainable modes of commerce.

REVITALIZATION PROJECT

Mostenses Square - Madrid - 4rd year Project - Universidad PolitĂŠcnica de Madrid (ETSAM) - Completed in 2015

In Madrid there are various spaces whose use and activity has been decreasing over the years; this has meant that many spaces that were thought for a high level of movement are currently empty. The Plaza de los Mostenses, in the city of Madrid, is one of the oldest squares in the capital that is currently losing its character.

The use of this square was always related to commercial activities, due to the large market located in the center.

The objective of this project is the revitalization of this space, maintaining its traditional commercial character, combining it with a greater use of public space. A new market is going to be created, which is also going to be a plaza and an office area.
