1. Drumming up real insight It may sound like an obscure form of algebra, but tympanometry comes as standard in every hearing assessment we carry out. The smart way to test how efficiently energy is passing through your ear drum (tympanic membrane) and middle ear, it gives us unique insight into your ear health, and helps our audiologists plan the treatment plan that’s best for you. Tympanograms are a graphical representation of the change in compliance (Y or vertical axis) of the middle-ear system as air pressure (X or horizontal axis) is varied.

The cost of good hearing aids is quite high, did that play any part in your decision-making? ‘Yes, they are expensive but when you weigh that against the ability to live a full professional and personal life, live a normal life, then they are worth every penny. This device was not part of my current supplier’s system but Beth convinced them to integrate the two elements as she knew it would help deal with wax build up and avoid blockages. She also suggested a saline spray – a simple thing but it has had a major impact on my continuity of hearing. This is indicative of Leightons’ expertise. What are the main benefits you have seen in hearing aid innovation over the last decade? Is there anything, particularly in terms of recent advances in functionality, that you find really helpful? ‘There has been so much advancement over the years. In general, the quality of hearing aids, even without the bolt-on technology, has improved greatly, background noise has been minimised, one-to-one conversations are easier and better quality, and ambient noise has been brought back to make the entire hearing experience more natural. 'To see. To hear. To live life to the full.' is at the core of what Leightons strives to deliver to customers. Does this resonate with you and reflect the experience you have had? ‘Absolutely. • Prolonged high blood sugar levels are common among diabetics and can restrict blood and oxygen to the tiny nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear. Over time, this causes damage, which can affect your hearing. • Autopsy studies of patients with diabetes suggest it could be due to nerve damage, which is frequently seen in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. • Maternally Inherited Diabetes & Deafness (MIDD) is a non-insulin-dependent subtype of the disease which accounts for a small percentage of diabetes suffers. t's well known that our diet and lifestyle habits have a big impact on our general health. But many people forget that these factors are also crucial to maintaining healthy hearing, especially as you grow older. Thankfully, taking care of your hearing is easier than you might think, and it’s never too late to start. Here are a few important principles to follow.

Include oil-rich fish As well as benefitting your heart and eyes, omega 3 fats can help prevent hearing loss. Try to have two portions of fish a week, one of them oil-rich, such as mackerel, herring, sardines or salmon. Other less potent forms of omega 3 can be found in linseeds, flaxseeds, walnuts and chia seeds.

Get enough B vitamins A lack of some B vitamins, including folate and vitamin B12, have been linked with high-frequency hearing loss. Vitamin B12 is found in fish, dairy products, eggs, meats and fortified cereals. Folate (or folic acid in its synthetic form)

Pack your diet with antioxidants Antioxidant vitamins and minerals help protect healthy ear cells from damage caused by 'free radicals'. Antioxidants include vitamin C (in citrus fruits, blackcurrants, berries, and green leafy vegetables), vitamin E (vegetable oils, avocado, nuts and seeds), zinc (meat, poultry, shellfish, eggs, nuts and seeds), selenium (brazil nuts, fish, shellfish, meat and eggs) and copper (nuts, shellfish and offal).

SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE The more we learn about hearing loss, the more we discover that it frequently co-exists with other health conditions. While the advice in this article isn’t intended to replace conventional medical treatment, it's definitely time to think about eating to nourish our ears as well as the rest of our bodies. At Leightons we're dedicated to helping you take the best possible care of your hearing. We offer a wide range of expert services, from free hearing assessments to the latest hearing aid technology. O

f the many excesses associated with rock music, high noise levels are perhaps the least documented. But for generations of musicians, hearing loss is providing painful payback for decades spent performing in front of adoring audiences. So how is a new generation trying to avoid the same fate?

The charity Action On Hearing Loss advises that anyone regularly exposed to sound levels greater than 85 decibels risks permanent damage to their hearing. USEFUL HINTS AND TIPS The good news is that hearing loss caused by exposure to recreational and occupational noise is virtually 100% preventable. Here's how to reduce potential damage to your hearing: 1. Limit the time you spend in loud environments. 2. Wear earplugs or other protective devices. 3. Protect children's ears in loud environments. 4. Avoid listening to personal stereos at high volume. 5. Give your ears a rest for 24 hours after loud noise exposure.
