THE UNDERPASS
My name is Leif Lovlin, currently a second year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.
To me, architecture makes up all the formal and spatial relations around us that can inform, and influence our actions, feelings and thoughts.
Although early in my architectural journey, I aspire to play with and create more interesting spatial relations, through both the built environment and that which surrounds it. This may manifest as a small bridge framing a waterfall, a sheltered courtyard at a busy intersection or a suspended oculus overlooking a freezing river.
I enjoy all creative avenues and am both driven and eager to delelop my skills in all areas of my education.
This portfolio is a collection of my academic work over the first two terms of my university education, as well as competition work from the following months.

Letter of Recommendation
To whom it may concern,
Leif Lovlin began working at Moriyama Teshima on January 3, 2023 and completed his employment April 28, 2023 to return to the University of Waterloo. While at Moriyama Teshima Leif worked on several projects and pursuits were his knowledge of several software platforms and keen interest in design progression were essential to the team
Post Lofts, Oshawa, ON
I worked closely with Leif on an 11 storey mass timber development in Os hawa, ON where his knowledge of Rhino, Sketchup, Revit, and Enscape allowed for quick and efficient design iterations and visualization throughout the schema tic design phase of the project. Leif researched design precedents, municipal space-planning standards, technical design guidelines related to the implementation of prefabricated envelope panels and showed enthusiasm to learn more about mass timber construction He was tasked with develop ing and refining building façade panels and layouts that could easily be reproduced and installed to facilitate a fast-paced mass timber construction process . Leif contributed to team design charettes, structural coordination meetings, and attended client presentations where his discerning design sensibility was appreciated and well communicated .
Leif was also a pleasure t o work with. He adapted well to schedule fluctuations typical of working with developers and managed his time to complete all deliverables on time. He approached every task with a great attitude and fit well into the collaborative culture of our studio. Leif left Moriyama Teshima in good standing to return to continue his education. We thank him for his contributions to our work and wish him success in his personal and professional future.
Sincerely,
Will Klassen M.arch OAA MRAIC Associate will@mtarch.com

At the merger of King and Queen street east in Toronto, the underpass serves as a unique kind of public library for the neighborhood. Focusing on developing life long skills and community, the small communal kitchen and courtyard space help create a place of rest at the, often busy three way intersection, as a place to learn, eat, relax and work. Doubling as both a library and community kitchen, the underpass hopes to attract the local demographic of young adults to an intersection which now largely serves as a chaotic bus stop.

The Underpass is located at the intersection of three major neighbourhoods in Toronto, along the Don Valley. This placement at the three way merge of King street, Queen street and River street causes this intersection to act more like a “pitstop”, where in people coming from their houses to the North or condos to the South get on and off streetcars, either going to or coming back from work. The Underpass strives to foster community in this “pitstop”, turning an intersection into a destination.

Located on the corner of Main street and Water street, Shift Co-op and Senior Housing tackles housing alienation through downtown urban integration, for both young and aging populations of Cambridge Ontario. With a focus on seniors and intergenerational families, Shift seeks to bridge the social boundary created by the housing market, often leaving these demographics relegated to rigid systems like long term care and suburbs by offering a deeply affordable housing option right in the downtown core of Galt.

At the end of the Bruce Trail in the Dundas valley concervation area lies Sherman Falls, where regular hikers, tourists and people in the Hamilton area go to enjoy themselve. The Log Bridge serves as a pedestrian crossing for the creek coming from the falls. It frames the falls and integrates with the trail through biomimetic design, imitating a fallen log. The Bridge is made primarily of steam bent wood and glulam structural members, complimenting the surrounding forested area.

Spanning 75m across Hell’s Gate Canyon near Rimouski, Quebec, Limbo bridges the intermediary space between the freezing river below and the open sky above. While crossing, the suspended bridge teeters on the edge of uncertainty—the plummet below being visible throughout the entirety of its crossing. Visible at the middle is the five kilometer canyon, framed by the six meter diameter oculus, suspended sixty three meters in the air. The structure mimics the constant tension between the views below, outwards, and upwards, which are felt as the trail reaches and opens up to the canyon.
