EDUCATION OFFICER SHAKEELA ISLAM Employability What is your degree worth to you? Is it the £27,000 you’re paying for?

Stressed about your post-Uni prospects? You’re not alone. Too many students overcome mental fatigue, months of exam anxiety and Shabangovers, leaving University unable to compete with apprentices gaining relevant experience. Many people want that extra something that completes their CV. I will promote collaborations with local businesses enabling students the opportunity to experience and network in a professional establishment. If elected, your employability will be my priority.

Most students have little contact time with their personal tutors, becoming a mere formality forgotten about after the introductory week.

If elected, students will see more valuable and helpful interactions with their personal tutor.

ADNAN RAHMAN 'Hi! My name is Adnan, I am a third year Politics and International Relations student. I am standing to be your Education Officer because I believe our educational experience can be better, it can be more representative and we can ensure that it involves everyone in our democracy, especially the most marginalised. Marketisation is eating away at higher education with an increase in fees & the cost of living, our lecturers seeing their pay stagnate and our departments & mental health services being starved of resources, all whilst our vice chancellors see a healthy rise in their six figure salaries. IMAN SHALLAL

I am a hardworking, passionate and approachable individual who has the dream of tackling big and small issues, not just locally or nationally but, globally. I am currently a second year BSc Economics student, running to be the SU president for 2019/2020.

I began as the Democratic Procedures Representative in my first academic year, 2017/2018. I am currently the Students' Union Ambassador, Peer Mentor and a Scrutiny Panel member. Hence, I have obtained a great understanding of the SU structures and how it functions. I also have a strong base of networks and relationships with the SU staff.

Being the Scrutiny Panel member allowed me to assess the manifesto points of the executive officers, including the president, and track their progress. Amy, who has been the SU president for the last 2 years has done very well. I plan to improve upon some of her great achievements and continue upon some of her unfinished projects like the Working Class at Leicester Campaign. Also, there are new projects that I believe can be carried out that will cater students' needs and wants.

I am here to hear you and work with you to make the changes.

JACK TERRY Some of you may remember me from last year’s election, but now I’m back, and this time I have policies. For example: Amend the SU constitution to make the presidency a hereditary position which shall be held for life. I will have no children so that a war of succession is triggered upon my death.

Close the university’s borders and surround campus with a large barbed wire fence. Nobody will gain access to campus unless they can tell an entirely original joke.

Erect a large statue of myself in front of the physics department.

Replace the library with a waxwork museum where all the waxworks are myself.

Employ privateers to hunt down the pirates threatening our shipping.

Employ a team of zookeepers to investigate reports of an escaped gorilla.

The extension to the Percy Gee building will house a menagerie.

HAMZA REHMAN Hi guys! My name is Hamza and I am a third year Politics and International Relations student. I want to stand as your Activities Officer because I passionately believe that every student society should be recognised and supported for their immense hard work.

Unfortunately, student groups often feel disengaged with the Student Union and have little accessible routes of communications which not only hinders their progress, but it also alienates new and smaller societies who need support. I will tackle this bureaucracy by bridging a gap between the Student Union and Societies so that every student group has the reassurance that their voices will be recognised, and their concerns tackled. Below is a brief overview of what I am standing for: Revamping booking forms so student groups can focus on their events as oppose to the paperwork.

SAM WHARVELL My name is Sam Wharvell. I am currently studying for a MSc in Biological Chemistry and I am running for activities officer. I am a hardworking, very organised person who just wants to help people in anyway I can. I have been on 3 different committees, as well as 2 team Leicester sports teams, and been a key part of organising several successful events including ones with multiple societies. I have a drive to make sure as many students enjoy university to the fullest and I feel I can do this by working with societies to improve everyone’s experience.

I want to create a sense of community between societies and work on communication between the SU and Societies.

Continue working to help societies through the redevelopment of the SU Work to make the SU more sustainable by reducing food waste and the use of non-renewable resources.

WELLBEING OFFICER SANA ALI My name is Sana; I’m a 3rd year Psychology student and I’m running to be your Wellbeing Officer, because every student deserves to feel safe and supported at University and there is so much more the Union and University can do to ensure this.

If elected as Wellbeing Officer, I will: Reform the counselling services by hiring qualified CBT therapists Destigmatise mental health through campaigns and talks, particularly in liberation groups and men Make mitigating circumstances more mental health conscious Create pamphlets detailing how to help if someone has a panic attack Start a campus-wide body positivity campaign Implement mandatory consent workshops to combat sexual harassment and rape Rally for more lighting in surrounding areas of University, such as New Walk and Victoria Park More sexual health support, particularly for LGBT+ people Housing support through cut the rent protests, house-hunting advice and housemate finder events I have experience working with both the Union as an Equality Liberation Champion for my department, as well as Publicity Officer for Amnesty International Society and with the University as a member of the Race Equality Action Group. From this, I have developed the confidence, event-planning and organisational skills required to make positive, impactful change.

EMILY BENNETT

I will bring awareness of support structures into induction lectures at the start of each term and give new students a Wellbeing pack on collecting their ID. I will implement a "kindness first" attitude in mitigating circumstances, where the health of the student is put first.

I will introduce a "safeguarding procedure" to help students struggling with the transition to university. This would be an opt-in service with regular check in emails and if any concerns are raised, Residential Advisers would be sent to check on the student.

I will introduce and increase drop-in sessions for everything from drugs and alcohol to homesickness, as well as ensuring general relaxation spaces as part of the redevelopment.

I will implement more practical Wellbeing training workshops for students on a more regular basis, and provide continued support to society Wellbeing and Inclusion Ambassadors.

I would look to extend the number of sessions offered by Union Counselling as changing therapies can impact already vulnerable students' wellbeing.

I will see gender neutral toilets installed across campus.

I will provide greater aid for disadvantaged students, with signposting to institutions that offer positions to people with little or no work experience.

JAY CAVANAGH I have worked tirelessly as your LGBT+ Officer across this year, learning the processes of the Union and working proactively with the various members of staff that I need to have solid relationships with to deliver on my manifesto points. I can offer an intersectional, committed and well-planned approach.

I always found it important to assure the well-being of all individuals in society.

From young age, it always stood out to me to be good to other people and make sure that they are always satisfied, even if it meant that I would have to lower myself for their happiness. I prioritize the people.

It has been a dream of mine to always be able to help all people, in every way I can, because there is no way I'd ever let anyone ever go through any difficult times, because I've been in these positions. There is no human being I'd ever want to see fall apart or feel like they couldn't be safe, whether on campus or off campus.

I love to hear people out and I can definitely promise to always provide those in need of support my 100% attention, and to always be honest in the support given and purely from my heart.

I care about everyone, because we are all human. We all deserve to be happy and to be able to live in this world knowing that there's nothing that should ever bring us down. Nobody should ever feel alone in any situation.

TONY MAGAIA My experience: Welfare Officer for the LGBT+ Society (previously BAME and Social Secretary) Student Ambassador for the Biological Sciences Department Social Secretary for Street Dance Society; Equality and Liberation Champion; Member of Leicester Citizens Peer Mentor I intend to celebrate diversity within the university. The intersectionality of this role must be explored in order to represent for every student.

I want to empower all liberation groups not limited to Women, BAME, LGBT+, and Disabled students as well as people of faith to thrive, providing them the tools to doing so, and aiding at every step, increasing their inclusivity in academia as well.

SANDRA TETTEH My name is Sandra and I am a 3rd year BA International Relations Student. I currently sit as the BAME Officer for the University of Leicester Student Union. And I am running for the position of the first ever Equality and Liberation Officer.

My BAME Officer position highlighted the need for an extension of my role which would be a full-time position. I am running because I believe that the university has a long way to go in ensuring that the student experience is the best value for money one can get.

LEONIE WILLIAMS My experience: My name is Leonie but you can call me LEO I’m running for Equality and Liberation Officer because these principles grow deep within me. I have so far demonstrated this by co-founding the West Indian Society which was due to feeling as though we needed to raise awareness for all the West Indian islands as well as the culture that stands behind them.

One of my main aims is to give more exposure to events that honour minorities such as Black History Month and International Women’s Day. In terms of planning events, I want to collaborate with a range of societies and other universities, meanwhile ensuring that a selection of these events are made accessible to Oadby residents.

Being discriminated against is something that most people have/are suffering from and not being able to liberate yourself freely is an ideology that I can’t believe takes place to this day. Therefore, I want to hold focus groups that students can have amongst each other which can range from, islamophobia too homophobia to ableism to racism to sexism to discrimination against gender reassignment. I want every minority to be accounted for.

MOHAMED FATHY GHARIB KOHLA I am Mohamed, 2019 MSc. Management Course Rep winner with accomplished role key records. I am doing the second major now (First was MBA with honour, Leicester University 2017). Former three successive years student union president in Egypt. Throughout my entire personal and academic life, I gained sufficient experience in raising, handling and solving issues dedicated to peers well-being and Human Rights.

Regarding this role, it is imperative for everyone to gain he/she own rights under only one reason that is 'Human Nature', as an E & L officer this is the time to support and encourage people to elaborate, stand, open their mindsets and hearts to the others at first whatever your gender, ethnicity, and even with no identification. LGBT+, women and disabled should recognise their privilege, should be well listened for and communicated. In my country, I have been attacked for defending those 'privileged humans'.

I can make a change, speak to raise the voices of our peers, encourage the talk instead of silence, introduce LGBT role models to participate in every aspect of our life, halt the anti-LGBT legislation, fight the bullying, support the Equality Act upon illegalising discrimination. Exhibitions, conferences, roundtable discussions, and public talk are crucial and I professional in doing so.

SULEIMAN SULEIMAN It is okay not to be ‘Normal’; It is not real, what is real though is different human beings with different complex experiences which makes us the same.

There is no need for anyone to feel alone. The world would be so much better if we no longer focused on trivialities and were more inclined to what makes us human, what makes us the same. I intend to represent the groups who feel their experiences are not understood, to create a bridge between all the unnecessary gaps that society has created. STUART TALIESIN OWAIN HUGHES Do not put the word equality in the title of this position if it is not equal and open to EVERYONE.

SPORTS OFFICER MIA NEMBHARD Hi, I’m running to be your next Sports Officer. I’m currently club captain of the largest club on campus (Netball). My goal is to push for as much inclusion and access to sport as possible. As part of the current SU’s Sport Council, I’ve carried out my own projects and worked directly with Sport and Active Life. Most recently, I’ve held focus groups on diversity in sport on campus. I’ll use this feedback to provision sport programmes and facilities for a wide range of students including those that have not felt prioritised. Sport isn’t solely recreational but contributes greatly to mental and physical health. So regardless if you compete nationally or do a ‘Let’s Do Leicester’ session once a month, I’m passionate about reducing barriers to sport. My manifesto focusses around these areas: Culture, Facilities, Participation and Access.

Initiatives targeting gym membership, women’s only training areas, transforming the campus gym, free sport sessions, free transport to training and much more. I’ve gained specific experience within the department and received awards including Sports Personality OTY 2018. I want to modernise the way we use and see university sport and am confident I would be able to deliver as your Sports Officer.
