he former Leicester Market Hall is officially no more, following an eight month demolition programme. The conspicuous red brick structure and former 1970s market hall has been obliterated to pave the way for ambitious regeneration plans set to take the city by storm. Work kicked off at the beginning of the year at the site behind the Corn Exchange. The now vacant site is ready for the next stage and
its reincarnation into a stunning public square. Sir Peter Soulsby, Leicester City Mayor said: “What we have there now is an amazing space and a big one too. It’s a space with great potential.” The old market hall has previously been described as smelly and dank, with many onlookers lamenting its existence. Shopper Sharni Kaur from Loughborough said: “This place has been crying out for a full-on rebuild for a good
few decades. Whatever replaces this old market hall has to be an improvement. It’s about time this happened, it was becoming something of an eyesore. “I have shopped in Leicester all my life and the old building has always blighted the landscape. It wasn’t very nice inside either. I’m really looking forward to seeing the new plans. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
