Leicester Business Women Newsletter Welcome you to our Summer 2014 newsletter

What’s been happening at Leicester Business Women HQ Since Leicester Business Women’s last newsletter back in March 2013 we have been busy with supporting new entrepreneurs into the exciting world of business. September 2013 saw the Leicester Business Women workshops kick off again in the city centre, since then we ran a further 3 programmes, assisting 41 fabulous women in total. Now the new term at schools and colleges in the City have begun we are excited to be delivering the next phase of Leicester Business Women workshops. WE will be meeting 11 potential entrepreneurs and relish helping them turn their business dream into a reality. We are continually proud of the success story that is LBW, women connecting and helping one another to create and grow local businesses. Some who have grown to be of national and international status. We are often asked what sets LBW apart from other support programmes available to residents of Leicester City. Firstly, it’s fusing the practical side of business with the emotional. It takes both financial kudos and a huge belief to get a business launched and we give facts, techniques and exercises to deal with both. We deliver interactively, a far cry from the ‘chalk and talk’, fall asleep in the corner kind of workshop delivery, often experienced elsewhere. More intensive support is given as and when required. Biggest of all, the team behind LBW are passionate about their clients achievements, a sure fire recipe for success. Leicester Business Women’s final training programme of workshops will be taking place in November 2014, for further details and to book your place please contact Nicole either via nicole.hocking@skillsforenterprise.co.uk or call 0116 255 8794. Carol Troake, Economic Development Officer for Blaby District Council was also recommended to Leicester Business Women. With some adaptations to fit both genders and local clients, in June 2014, Blaby District Council sponsored the first Business Start Up Programme, incorporating workshops and one to one support for budding entrepreneurs. With an eclectic mix of business ideas we are proud to say that immediately following the workshops many of the participants began trading. Melanie Chester & Cathy Chester of Purple Supporting Parenting

“Extremely useful, we wouldn't have got as far as we are now without the support from Leicester Business Women” Melanie Chester and Cathy Gethins registered with Leicester Business Women at the beginning of 2014 after a family member saw a project advertisement, they both attended the January programme of workshops. From January until May, Mel and Cathy worked tirelessly to ensure their business plan was viable, the marketing plan was in place, the legalities were taken care of etc. In May 2014 Purple Supporting Parenting, which delivers private parenting support delivered at the family's home. This includes support with breast feeding, behaviour issues such as fussy eating and sleep problem and many areas around parenting, was ready to launch. Leicestershire now has it’s own answer to all of the parenting problems we are used to viewing on our tv screens, except they can help you privately, in your own home and assist in a calmer, happier home life for those with little ones. They both decided to start a partnership when their current jobs become limited and they wanted to do something they were both extremely passionate about. With years of experience and training between them, they are continuing to offer excellent parenting support. Being able to work around their own families and to be their own bosses is also very important to both Mel and Cathy. Currently both Mel and Cathy still work part time “We're not full time self

employed as yet, we still work in our current roles too. What we have enjoyed is being able to work around our families.” Mel and Cathy had the support of partners and family when thinking of starting but they did feel time was a barrier “we found it frustrating because we are unable to complete tasks as quick as

we'd like. Some added stress was caused with family life as we had more to fit in around our current busy jobs.” However Leicester Business Women have kept them on track with one to one support, where our advisor worked with Mel & Cathy to set realistic guidelines and appropriate actions, both before and since they have registered their business. “We have learnt so many

things since starting our business and have adjusted to these as we went along, we're not sure we would do anything differently.” We asked Mel and Cathy how different starting their own business was from their initial perception. “Not sure we had a perception, we may have expected things to move a little quicker but were

realistic in knowing it wouldn't happen overnight.” Their advice to other women considering using their skills, experience and knowledge to make an income:

1. Be patient 2. Take all the advice, training and coaching you can get 3. Be open to changing things as you go along. For more information regarding Purple Supporting Parenting please contact Mel or Cathy via email Mel@purplesp.com or cathy@purplesp.com. Follow them on Twitter @purpleparenting

Exciting new project to help charitable causes comes to Leicester

Avnesh Pandya, Hannah Torrance and Sunita Patel are the Good For Nothing Crew in Leicester Photo courtesy of Will Johnston. www.willjohnstonphotography.com Good For Nothing is a nationwide movement that supports charitable organisations with the help of the local business community. People from Leicester sign up to attend an event and work on projects using the skills they have gained from work or business. It’s different as there is no ongoing commitment and people can attend as many events as they like and support in any way they can. Avnesh, business advisor for LBW says, “I went to a hack in Nottingham and thought this would work really well in Leicester – no one was doing it here and so I set about putting a team together.” Sunita who runs Newtrition and a member of LBW was also involved in the Nottingham event, “I supported the hack in Nottingham with granola from Newtrition. I loved the concept as much as Avnesh and jumped at the chance to work on building up the community in Leicester.” Good For Nothing is a play on the fact that everyone involved is doing some “good for nothing” – no one gets charged and no one gets paid – everything from the room to the food and stationary at the event (known as a hack) are gifted and everyone who takes part gives their time to the charity. Individuals can support it by getting involved directly in solving an organisation’s challenges and local businesses can support it by giving whatever they want to – the good cause benefits from everyone working together. Hannah who started her business Unwritten Theatre following a LBW business workshop added, “It’s awesome how everyone can use the skills they have: writing, planning, business – it’s all useful for a cause that often needs skills not cash donations. It’s amazing the difference that we can make and it’s a new cause every time we run an event.” Good For Nothing Leicester is a volunteer project and the crew are continuing to spread the word before the next hack. To find out how you can support the project either as an individual or business visit www.GoodForNothingLeicester.co.uk and sign-up or email the crew for more information hello@goodfornothingleicester.co.uk .
