Enclosed in this newsletter you will find very important information. Please take the time to read through it so that you are aware of important details you need to know. A few key points: Back to School Open House is Saturday, August 22nd from 10:00-12:00.

PE Uniforms will be required this year if you are taking PE. They are $20 and will be available for purchase at Open House. This uniform MUST be worn for PE. Students will have the same School Counselor for all 4 years at LSHS! It is our goal to make sure that we get to know our families and work with students to develop post high school plans. Everyone will have a “plan” when they walk across our graduation stage. We have a busy year ahead of us! Our AICE Cambridge program is continuing to grow and our students are engaged in very rigorous studies. We have many exciting events planned for our Center for the Arts Programs. We are most proud that our campus will be open for “teaching and learning” as we continue our journey as an AVID National Demonstration School! Academic Excellence and Rigor is truly a priority for our students and I am very proud to have such a committed staff on board to make this happen.

Parents, it is so important that you remain actively involved in your child’s educational progress.

We need to work as partners in helping your son or daughter achieve their highest academic potential.

Your son/daughter may not always admit it, but they want and need your support and encouragement more than ever. You can assist with monitoring academic progress by reviewing interim reports that come home every Friday with your child and by checking ParentLink weekly. You can also have a voice inside the school by attending our monthly Parent Involvement Workshops, the School Advisory Council meetings and by becoming an active volunteer. We also hope to see you at a variety of our programs, whether that be academic, sports and/or arts events. You are always welcome on campus and your presence DOES make a difference!

Who’s Who in Guidance?

Students are assigned to a school counselor by the letter of the last name.

They will have the same counselor for all four years they attend Lehigh Senior. Students, please look above and find out who your guidance counselor will be this coming school year. This is the person you will contact for any assistance you may have throughout the year.

Summer Guidance Information

Just a reminder the school counselors will be off during the summer. Ms. Forester will be available during summer school hours (7/7 – 7/30). The summer is the best time to make up any missing credits and you can do that on Lee County Virtual School (flvs.net).

Schedules

Students’ schedules will be mailed during the summer. Counselors will be available for schedule change requests on August 10 –Alpha A thru H, August 11 - Alpha I thru P, August 12 – Q thru Z. (Schedules changes are not guaranteed. We will do our best to accommodate your request.)

Final Exams

Students who need to make up their final exams may come in July 9 or 10 between the hours of 9am and 11am. Please come to the Guidance Office.

College & Career Center

Remember that the counselors are in the college and career center every day during lunch shifts to answer any student questions, help with college applications, ACT/SAT waivers and registration, and any other academic advising that may be needed.

Enrollment Program will sign up during the month of October. Sophomore students need a 3.5 GPA. Juniors and Seniors need a 3.0. Once they have signed up, and there GPA meets the requirements, they will be registered for the PERT. The PERT is the college placement test required by Florida Southwestern State College. Certain test score levels are required to take any college level courses. If those levels are met, the student will work with the dual enrollment coordinator to register for the appropriate courses for the Spring.

Dual Enrollment books for the fall semester may be picked up in the Guidance Office from Mrs. Plucker, the Dual Enrollment Coordinator, during the week of August 10 – 17 between 9:00am and 1:00pm. VISUAL ARTS

The Visual Art department has a new look this coming school year. Ms. Haskins is teaching painting and you will find her in room 2009. We welcome a new teacher, Mr. Cruz who will be teaching Art 2D, Gaming and Animation. Ms. Penuel will be teaching Ceramics and Mrs. Somogyi will be teaching Drawing.

We welcome all the new art students and encourage them to join in art shows, field trips and other activities we will be doing this year. Stop by Mrs. Somogyi’s room and pick up your red portfolio. This is where you will store all your art in the coming years. We want you to start out just right. Be sure to ask which art teacher is your mentor. This mentor teacher will guide you and give you encouragement.

The Art gallery is currently showing underclassmen art from 2014/2015 school years. Be sure to check it out in building one.

• Be sure that you are enrolled in challenging classes that will prepare you for college.

• Consider opportunities that will help position yourself for scholarships. This includes not only getting good grades or performing well in extracurricular activities but also community involvement.

• Consider which colleges you want to attend. Spend some time narrowing down your list of potential schools. You should end up with a list of 3-6 schools.

The Academy of Digital and Media Arts finished the year off with students passing over 180 Industry Certifications! Our students earned certifications in Mircosoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Premier Pro software. Many of our students earned multiple certifications which will help them not only in college but also when they enter the workplace after graduation.

JROTC JROTC is much more than the assumed "Army prep class." The mission of JROTC is to shape student cadets into better citizens. In the class, you develop leadership skills while working cooperatively with other cadets. You also learn to understand the importance of high school graduation for a successful future, about college, and even more educational and employment opportunities. This program is an opportunity to open doors for you and helps you discover things you might not have thought of before.

JROTC is a successful program that benefits and student interested. While in this class there are no mandatory costs, uniforms are issued out and provided for you. The uniforms bring all the cadets together and are also a way to represent yourself among your peers. JROTC has many opportunities for the cadets to explore.

In JROTC there are a variety of teams and activities you can participate in. Some upcoming events include the Drill Team camp that will be July 27-31st between 8-10am for anyone interested coming out. Raider camp will begin on June 20-24th between 8-10am. Anyone is welcome to join in the fun time JROTC has to offer. Many volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year, as well.

Cambridge Below is all of the information you will need to have about the Cambridge Program at Lehigh Senior High School over the summer. Please do not hesitate to e-mail Ms. Forester (clairemf@leeschools.net) if you have any questions.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS The Cambridge Program works digitally in terms of summer assignments. All incoming Cambridge Freshmen & current Cambridge Students are expected to have their summer assignments completed by the first day of school—NO EXCUSES. Below are directions to obtaining the summer assignments online.

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID welcomes the incoming freshmen students and looks forward to a fabulous year with all of our AVID students. If you are interested in joining the AVID program but missed the deadline, please know that we will recruit both 9th and 10th grade students during the first quarter. AVID is a program that supports students in their rigorous classes and encourages them to advocate for themselves by setting goals and becoming more organized. AVID is looking for those students who show potential but may need that extra support. AVID is not a remedial program, and students need to come prepared to make themselves successful. Student Parking Permits will be sold at Open House on August 16th in the Cafeteria for $20.00. Students will need to fill out the application with a parent signature and all of the following: the vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and the tag number of the vehicle that they will be driving.

Parking permits will also be sold during the first week of school in the café.

Locker Info

Lockers will be sold at Open House on August 16th in the Cafeteria for $2.00. Students may also purchase them during the first week of school in the Athletic office before school starts and in the cafeteria during lunch.

Our goal is to get our families more involved in our school community this year at LSHS! We will be having some program information nights to educate parents and students about our specific programs and ways they can increase their involvement. During these information nights, we will also share ways that parents can get more actively involved during the school day and at events. Binder Requirements

At LSHS every student is required to have one 3 inch binder with 8 tabs. This binder will be required daily. In addition, all students should purchase writing utensils and paper. The binder is used to keep you organized and on track. Parents, students will have their binders checked weekly and every Friday they will receive a print out of their grades. The “interim” will be placed in the front of their notebooks weekly for you to check. Help us keep your student on track, by checking, monitoring and encouraging progress.

Dress Code The purpose of the Dress Code is to encourage students to focus on the learning process without the distractions of unsuitable dress and grooming. Students shall maintain a clean, orderly appearance at all times. The responsibility for the personal appearance of the student and the adherence to the dress code policy rests with the parent/guardian and the student. Personal appearance shall not distract from the educational process. According to the School Board of Lee County, each school has the authority to establish additional standards.

The following guidelines establish the minimum acceptable standards for student dress to be interpreted and enforced by the administration and staff at Lehigh Senior High School. Students are required to comply with this dress code while on school grounds.

Shoes shall be worn at all times.

Apparel shall be adequate in both length and coverage to be considered appropriate for school. Skirts and shorts are to be at or below the knee, regardless of whether leggings are worn.

Pants shall be worn fastened and at the waist. It is unacceptable for undergarments to be exposed. Sagging pants are not permitted.

Shirts or blouses shall be appropriately fastened in accord with the design of that shirt or blouse. The length shall extend beyond the waist level.

Pajama attire of any kind, including pajama slippers or house shoes, is not permitted.

Transparent or see-through tops, bare midriff, strapless, low-cut clothing, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage or are of a suggestive nature are prohibited: halters, spaghetti straps, backless dresses or tops, tube tops, tank tops, muscle shirts, or any clothing which may be distracting are prohibited.

Any articles of clothing or jewelry that could likely cause injury-such as chains, bracelets, rings, chokers with or without spikes, or studs-are prohibited. Wallet chains of any length are prohibited.

Apparel, emblems, insignias, badges, or symbols that promote the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, violence or any other illegal activity are prohibited.

Apparel or symbols which may be gang-related may not be displayed on a student’s person or in the student’s locker, vehicles or other locations on campus.

The wearing on campus of hats, caps, headgear, or sunglasses except in conjunction with designated school­-approved uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities is prohibited. (This includes hats attached to belt loops) Clothing with slogans or advertising which by its controversial or obscene nature disrupts the educational setting is prohibited.

Long, oversized and/or sleeveless jerseys are prohibited. Shirts must be worn with sleeveless jerseys.

Dress code violations may not be covered with outerwear (jackets, hoodies, etc.)

No holes, tears or slits in jeans or pants.

Leggings with or without pockets cannot be worn as pants or as an undergarment.

Note: The school administration reserves the right to appraise any current fashion or fad and determine whether it is appropriate for school wear. Students must be in dress code compliance upon entering school grounds, during all after-school events, and at all times while students are on campus. Lee County District Dress Code Policy is still the standard and will be enforced.

Dress code will be checked daily and strongly enforced. Any student in violation of the dress code policy will be sent to the intervention center. Failure to report will result in OSS.

The first 15 minutes of every class, students will have the opportunity to read for pleasure. The goal is to make reading meaningful and enjoyable. Please make sure your student brings a BOOK to school to read. Our library recently purchased highly engaging books for students over the summer. Students, make sure you check out our NEW BOOKS!

Weekly Progress Reports

EVERY FRIDAY we print “Progress Reports” for our students. These will be placed in the front of your student's binder. Please check them and monitor your students progress. TOGETHER we can keep students on track, before they start to get off track.
