Burgundy, known as Bourgogne in French, is a province in eastern France famous for its great red and white wines produced mostly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay respectively.

Centuries of vineyard refinement in Bourgogne, which vignerons observed, identified, and named specific plots (climats) that consistently produced individually distinctive wines, created the concept of “terroir.� Terroir in its purest form encompasses the influences of soil, topography, and mesoclimate on the vine and the grapes it produces. The result is a wine made from those grapes, unique from all others, with nuances that are replicated vintage after vintage.

Burgundian winemaking places great respect on the grapes’ ability to manifest its origin. As a result, Burgundian winemakers endeavour to minimize human intervention as much as possible.

Biodynamic: a type of organic viticulture that performs vineyard and cellar work in conjunction with the phases of the moon and the movement of the planets.

Biologique: organic viticulture.

Climat: precisely delineated parcels of land enjoying specific geological and climatic conditions that comprise the mosaic of Bourgogne’s classified crus. The climats of Côte d’Or were successfully registered on UNESCO’S World Heritage list in July 2015.

Commune: the smallest civic administrative unit in France. It comprises a village and the surrounding land.

Crus: normally applies to a specific vineyard and the wine it produces – traditionally one of superior quality, i.e. a premier cru.

Cuvée: an ambiguous term referring either to an individual vat or to a bottled wine.

Lieu-dit: a parcel of land within a single commune whose traditional name recall a topographical or historic particularity.

Négociant: a merchant who buys grapes, juice or wines and bottles and ships it under his/her own label.

The Bourgogne wine region does not include Beaujolais. However, the term “la Bourgogne Viticole (the vineyard of Burgundy)� can be used to refer all of the AOC vineyards in Burgundy, including Beaujolais.

Beaujolais Nouveau became highly in demand since the 1970s. However, the real potential of Gamey Noir and the region lies in its ten named crus.

THE LEGENDS “You haven’t tasted a perfect wine until you have tasted Leroy,” said Robert Parker. The owner of an exceptional dominion of old-vine vineyards, Lalou Bize-Leroy, an unparalleled taster, passionate supporter of biodynamics, and exceptional winemaker, has produced superlative wines that are revered by critics and collectors globally.

Ruchottes Chambertin is a small vineyard (3.3ha) shared among eight owners. Situated on the rocky mound of La Montagne with very thin topsoil, the wines are typically light in colour and full of subtle nuances rather than overpowering weight.

Perfectly situated on a steep slope to both south and east exposures, Clos St-Jacques could easily merit grand cru status. The 6.6ha vineyard is shared among five producers. The wine is rich, tightly structured with a strong mineral undertone.

Aux Malconsorts (5.86ha) is situated at the southern end of Vosne-Romanée and abutting La Tâche to the north. The biggest owner today is Albert Bichot (1.76ha). The wine has a gloriously wealth of flavours and density, most long-lived among other premier crus.

Domaine de la Pousse d’Or owns the whole of the Clos des 60 Ouvrées. Caillerets is quintessentially finesse and delicacy.

A great Corton Charlemagne comes from the classic En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne lieu-dits. The wine has power, slightly linear than the rounded fruit of Montachet, but with a magical stoniness behind the initial fruit aromas of the grape.

DOMAINE ARNOUX-LACHOUX

Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux covers 14.5ha and 15 appellations including Clos Vougeout, Nuits Saint George, and Vosne Romanée Les Suchots.

Pascal Lachaux and his son, Charles, use elements from biodynamic, organic, and sustainable practices to craft their excellent wines. Under Pascal’s leadership, the domaine focused on reduced yields and began using 500L casks on the village and regional wines to preserve the fruit and lessen oak flavours.

Being in charged of all vinification since 2012, Charles has recently introduced whole bunch fermentation and focus on a hands-off approach in their practice.

He also places an emphasis on canopy management to ensure the growth of more leaves, which result in more photosynthesis for an earlier harvest and sweeter grapes.

DOMAINE RAMONET

This extremely famous estate in Chassagne-Montrachet owes its notoriety as much to the excellence of its great white wines as to its owners’ reputation for eccentricity. Along with his brother Noël, Jean-Claude Ramonet, who is currently at the helm, took over with almost no transition from their grandfather, Pierre, who founded the estate in the late 1920s and earned it a place among Burgundy’s elite.

The domaine offers four grand crus: Montrchet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and Chevalier-Montrachet. Among their white premier crus, the most prized is undoubtedly the Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes. The estate’s reds are equally respected, including the most particularly, the Chassagne premier cru Clos de la Boudriotte. The village-level and even the simple regional wines of Domaine Ramonet are worth the trip.

FROM ELITE TO BOUTIQUE

Anne-Françoise Gros (VosneRomanée) & François Parent (Pommard) whose wines have been made in substantial premises in Beaune since 1998.

Founded in 1830s, both a négociant and a grower, with 100ha of vineyards amassed through the acquisition of various estates.

Since 1792, the Collet family has been crafting wines in the heart villages of Chablis, where tradition and modernism live together.

Based in Vosne-Romanée, this is a fine source of relatively modern wines, full in colour, well-oaked and with concentrated fruit.

EST in the late 1950s, Roulot is one of very few estates to have joined Burgundy’s elite in just two generations for precise, pedigreed Meursault.

This extremely famous estate in Chassagne-Montrachet owes its notoriety to the excellence of its great white wines since late 1920s.

A cult domaine whose cellars were built in the C12 to store wine for the Abbey of StBénigne. The vines are for the most part extremely old.

Owner of Château Fuissé (the historical reference in South of Burgundy) for five generations since 1862, and one of the cofounders for Pouilly-Fuissé AOC.

One of the most famous estate in Puligny- Montrachet established in the early 20th century.

Biodynamic cultivation since 2010.

The biggest charity sale in the world, takes place annually on the third Sunday of November in the unique setting of HôtelDieu of Beaune.

There are 3 entities to the Leroy empire: Domaine Leroy (VosneRomanée), Maison Leroy (Auxey-Duresses) and Domaine d’Auvenay (St-Romain).

The house was founded in 1859, while the family were already vignerons in Beaune since 1826. Louis Jadot is one the biggest names in Burgundy.

EST in 1850, the Michel family has developed a worldwide reputation for making clean, pure and precise Chablis in stainless steel tanks.

Olivier Leflaive left the family business (Do. Leflaive) in 1990s to dedicate himself to his own estate. The wine is known for elegance and finesse.

Christophe Perrot-Minot makes wines that combine finesse with style and depth. He transformed the estate from ordinary to elite in two decades since late 1980s.
