Closeness to nature carries risks. McLean residents campaigned hard a decade ago to preserve tall trees behind Dolley Madison Library during renovations and to have a multi-sectioned, curved glass window installed so library patrons could savor the lush, sylvan view. Fairfax County Public Library officials now are working to undo damage to part of that glass wall after a tree, felled by sustained high winds that slammed the northeastern United States late last week, crashed into the library March 2. The tree, possibly a tulip poplar, had English ivy on its trunk and was rotted throughout its core, said Merrily Pierce, who serves on the McLean Citizens Association’s Environment, Parks and Recreation Committee. “It is ironic that one of the trees resiFrederick, MD

April 5th during dents worked so hard to protect the Dolley Madison Library renovation fell on the very windows designed to showcase the park-like setting,” she said. The tree collapsed at about 4:35 p.m., just five minutes after officials had closed the Dolley Madison and several other libraries because of power outages, said Jessica Hudson, director of the county’s library system. No members of the public were in the facility when the tree hit, and two staff members who were present were not in the vicinity of the crash and escaped injury, she said. The falling tree broke two or three windows and “maybe damaged a chair or two,” said Hudson, who added the facility reopened March 5 at 10 a.m. Hudson thanked county facilities crew members who the evening of March 2 boarded up the broken windows and cleaned up the shattered glass. She could not provide an estimate on when final window repairs would be made, saying several “rather large” pieces of glass would have to be ordered. The original Dolley Madison Library opened in 1956 at 6811 Elm St. in McLean
