Arlington officials are set to unveil four prospective designs for the county’s longstalled aquatics center and fitness center at Long Bridge Park. But for county residents used to lengthy, involved planning processes – especially on this project – what comes next may be something of a surprise. “It’s very different,” County Board member Christian Dorsey said of the streamlined process that waits in the wings. Dorsey acknowledged “a certain level of unease” with the next steps, but said he expects the end result would be positive. “I’m willing to accept the unease,” Dorsey told the Sun Gazette. County officials expect to unveil the designs submitted from four finalist firms on Oct. 19. The firms were selected earlier this year to compete for the project, which has been stalled for more than a decade over ballooning costs but now is targeted to come in at a slimmed-down $65 million to $68 million. Under the competition – a first for Arlington – the four firms agreed to design and then build a project that, if selected, would meet the timeline and budget laid out by the county government for the Crystal City facility. As part of the deal, county officials largely have given up the opportunity to fine-tune (or nit-pick, depending on your point of view) the design that is selected.
