GEPAST SUSTAINABLE FASHION

Year With

2018 - 1st master Juliette Broucke & Ruben Gryp

In short

How can we encourage people to engage in slow fashion? With this project we wanted to offer a transparent and honest alternative to cheap fast fashion.

A STRATEGIC DRIVEN PROJECT

‘Gepast’ is a product service system that connects its customers with sustainable fashion brands while highlighting the authentic stories behind them. ‘Gepast’ offers a seasonal subscription plan in which you receive a personal and sustainable clothing package at home, perfectly in line with your fashion style. After a quality check, all outfits are passed on from user to user, thus implementing a sustainable framework even further in our service. To enhance the experience, our community platform connects like-minded people by inviting them to local events that promote their favourite sustainable brands. I learned

In this project I learned strategically approaching a complex issue. The aim was understanding the system concerning honest and sustainable clothing and creating one positive impact inside the bigger picture.

IO ACTIVITY REMINDER

Year With

2018 - 1st master Tine Vande Verre & Eva Wenborn

In short

IO is an activity planner for elderly. Daily and weekly activities are planned and managed by a caretaker and will be displayed on IO for the elderly to see. During the day activities come and go while IO visualises this using eclipses as metaphor. IO helps elderly reminding their daily activities and signals them when an activity is starting.

I learned

In this project I learned more about prototyping, 3D printing and app design. I played a key role during the ideation phase and in detailing the interactions and interfaces. Arduino-related I found myself more on the sideline, but assembling the final result was a real group effort.

During the day, the moon circles slowly around the body and displays the next activity. This resembles a normal clock.

When an eclipse ends, an activity begins. When an eclipse comes, an activity ends.

By pressing the home button, an overview of all activities is shown. The bigger a sphere the longer the activity will last.

10

With the supporting app of IO, caretakers can manage all group activities as well as individual activities. They can add upcoming events and access the agenda of each elderly of the residence. The IO display will notify the elderly of newly announced events.

PIXIE RICH INTERACTION CAMERA

Year With

2017 - 3rd bachelor Juliette Broucke

In short

In this project we designed a rich user experience for taking pictures and watching them. The aim was to reduce the bridge between digital and analogue camera’s and to give meaning to the user’s interactions. With Pixie we created a clear design language together with meaningful physical actions. This resulted in a simple and intuitive product that is easy to use.

AN EXPERIENCE DRIVEN PROJECT

Pixie’s target group is the wanderer that likes to travel and enjoy life. They take pictures because of the story behind them and the memories they want to cherish. I learned

In this project I learned to think about the meaning of interactions and how I can provoke the interactions I want with the right design language and consciously designed shapes.

14

We aimed for simplicity and wanted to make the product as unambiguous as possible, but in a stylish manner.

16

1 To take a picture you slide the rear camera element over the cartridge, thus pushing your photo inside the storage.

2 One of the six side edges jumps up and a preview of the photo appears. To store it you simply push the edge back in its place.

3 By placing the cartridge in the projector the photos can be projected. Rotate the lens in the right direction and start the show!

4

Scroll to next or previous photos by rolling the cartridge on its sides. To end the show you just take the cartridge out of the projector.

OKIYO ENCOURAGING COGNITIVE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Year

2020 - 2nd master

In short

Okiyo is a smartwatch designed to motivate newly retired people to exercise more by providing it with cognitive challenges. It stimulates daily exercise and triggers to stay cognitively and physically active. It contributes to healthy aging by building and maintaining healthy habits of cognitive and physical exercise, alone or with friends.

AN EXPERIENCE DRIVEN THESIS

The challenge was finding a user friendly way of interacting with the product along with exploring the varied cognitive challenges to enrich the physical activity and to train and maintain the brain in a fun way. I learned

In this project I learned to work by myself from start to finish, from idea to end-result. It challenged me in all phases of the design project: from consulting various experts and questioning the target market to making all the decisions that gradually sculpted the project along the way.

18

A newly retired At my age you notice that you are less stimulated and you have to make an effort to maintain your memory. I think your product is very helpful. It sets useful goals to keep the brain and the body active.

DEPLOYABLE STRUCTURE

Year With

2018 - 3rd bachelor Juliette Broucke, Eline Cools, Cassandra Pysson, Tine Van Loo & Tine Vande Verre

In short

This project took place during the five day International Design Week in February 2018, coached by Roland Fuhrmann. He challenged us to make a deployable structure and gave us the freedom to explore what kind of functional object we wanted to create. With a team of six people we decided to join forces and to create something big: a deployable roof. Inspired by a hoberman sphere we made a scale model of a deployable roof structure, out of laser cutted cardboard and split pins. The result was a foldable roof that can be turned into a smaller, easier to transport construction.

EARTH JENGA: CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS

Year With Idea by

2020 - 2nd master Juliette Broucke, Malinga Godderis, Arwen Raes, Thomas Verstrepen Asher Jay & Ief Winckelmans (Imactivista vzw)

In short

During this one week design sprint, our assignment was reinventing the classis Jenga game to bring awareness to how we treat planet Earth. The reinvented tower represents our Earth, while its bricks stand for the various environmental issues we’re facing today. Taking a brick from Earth and adding the weight on top has severe consequences. And sooner than later, the tower will fall…

A SUSTAINABILITY DRIVEN DESIGN SPRINT

The incentive was bringing awareness to investors, to stimulate them to invest in sustainable innovative initiatives. To reach these big investors, our main focus was making an art installation. But to reach the common public we also thought of a consumer version. I learned

During this project I learned more about the complexity of today’s climate issues by trying to map them logically. Selecting the 54 bricks was a real challenge because all issues are intertwined and affect each other in so many ways.

CAR SKETCHING

Year

2017 - 2nd bachelor

I learned

This project was a fun one week intermezzo. The car sketching workshop during the International Design Workshopweek really upgraded my sketching skills, with pencil and markers. Under the guidance of car designer Kris Van Coppenolle, I learned about the basic principles of ‘car sketching’, more specifically about alignment, proportion and marker techniques.

PO Sketch

Inspired by this one week experience, I continued practising afterwards. I was then asked to participate in a PO Sketch session, to which I agreed. So, still excited about car sketching, I gave a basic demonstration to a classroom of interested fellow students. This took place in April 2017.

LOGO DESIGN

Year

2020

In short

I took care of the logo design and brochure layout of Hoera!theater, a one man business that gives theatre workshops and performances at primary and secondary schools. The logo needed to be simple and playful and radiate a lot of fun.

I learned

This is my first design project of which I see the real implementation. I learned experimenting and negotiating with the client, in search of a fitting branding. Next to the logo, I made business cards, a brochure and a mailing layout.

ABOUT ME

HEY! I am Leen. In 2020 I graduated as product designer at University of Antwerp. I’m passionate about designing, sketching, photography and tumbling. I’m also interested in sustainability and I would love to gain more knowledge about sustainable living. Above all, I like designing useful things with real value to its users. I like to think I am a minimalist and I prefer to keep things simple. When making decisions I tend to consider all directions to tactfully select the perfect ones. This results in meaningful projects with all their aspects carefully thought out. I prefer working in team, when you can rely on each other’s strengths. One of mine are my eye for detail and my visualisation skills that are inspired by graphic design.
