Percy’s world is challenging. He wants what we all want — to fit in, to be heard, to have someone to love and be loved by in return, and to be recognized for who he is and the unique gifts he has to share with the world. Unfortunately, his world is filled with monsters who are blocking his path at every step of the journey, so he also must be brave enough to attempt whatever is necessary. From the top of the show, Percy tells us that – demigod or not –while it’s not always easy to make it the next step, it is important to take that step. Do not let the world knock you

Third, and truly the element I was most interested to explore I wanted a Greek Chorus onstage. An Everyman whose benign conduct fosters your (the audience's) identification with the protagonist. They are a group of Percy’s peers who watch, and at times participate in, his every move illustrating and embodying his hopes, fears, and thoughts. Working with him in some moments while creating obstacles in others. Very much embodying the way we perceive those around us on a day-to-day basis. This cast is to be commended for their ensemble work as that Greek Chorus. Their job is NOT an easy one. The intricacies of their movement and all the things they need to move while doing seven things at one time is super difficult. But, like Percy on his quest, they rose to the challenge embracing each of the wild ideas, attempting to create as many as four or five different ways until we determined which way best told the story. Then they added the turmoil of emotions on top. Truly incredible! It has truly been my pleasure discovering and shaping this show with this group of artisans.
I am so super-proud of everyone and appreciate their willingness to “go there” and the multiple discussions about “What?” and “Why?”and all the other questions. There are many to whom I owe HUGE debts of thanks for their kindness, artistry, hospitality, friendship, and support. If I begin to list them all – I am certain to leave someone out, which would be heartbreaking. So, know that if you worked in ANY capacity on this production – I appreciate you. Your artistry is at the heart of the story.
This play is dedicated to The Miller Family who added me to their family these last two months. I’ve been privileged to watch them pour their heart and souls into The Leeds, its programs and participants, and the Winchester community in so many ways. They are on a quest to see the arts thrive in this community and in every human who comes through their doors. I hope you find ways to support them in that quest in whatever way your unique gifts can do so.
Larry? Thanks for your patience, long phone conversations, and for playing games with me online. I’ll be home to take over morning dog walks soon. I love you.

Vivian Snipes (Director) Much like Percy's quest, Vivian's has been a long one with many winding paths filled with fascinating encounters. Viv knew in sixth grade she wanted to work in theatre (thanks, Mr. Maas!) and by ninth grade she decided to specialize in theatre for young audiences (thanks, Jerry Whiddon and Craig Babcock!). Much to her parents’ chagrin, as a senior in high school, she announced that she “wasn’t going to college but was going to get a job in theatre!” She (fortunately) went straight to work for Library Theatre in Washington, DC. Later ‐‐ while teaching elementary school, working toward a
degree in Interrelated Arts at the University of Maryland and volunteering at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park, MD ‐‐ she met and married her husband Larry. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Kentucky to work for Lexington Children's Theatre, where they remained (working side by side on a daily basis [and we're still married]) until retiring after 41+ years in December of 2020. She and Larry moved to Statesboro, Georgia in April of 2024 to be close to family and their first grandchild. Vivian directed Little Women at Leeds (May 2023) and she is forever grateful to Tracey Miller for the invitation to direct The Lightning Thief (and for so much more!). She is thankful for the myriad of artisans who joined her on each of her 300+ quests (productions), but maybe none more than the team of artisans that contributed to The Lightning Thief What a joy it has been finding this show in our hearts, minds, and bodies while staging Percy's quest. It's been an honor and gift to have so many strong collaborators who cared so deeply about telling this story. Thank you for living in the moment, tackling ALL the monsters, and for sharing such a strong bond within the Leeds family and with the Winchester community. Bring on the real world! We're ready for it!
Steve is a Winchester native who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a Master’s degree in Education from Georgetown College. He has been part of the musical theatre scene in Clark County for 40 years, having directed 20+ musicals and shows. Steve is currently the Family Pastor at Calvary Christian Church. He and his wife Shanda have three children, Caleb, Keegan and Kaeton. He is especially proud of his grandkids Crowder, Crosby Kate, Cruz, Creed, Houston, and Monroe!
Chelsea Russell (Fight Director/Choreographer) is a performer, arts administrator, teaching artist, and fight director currently based in Central Kentucky. Favorite performance credits include A Christmas Story (Lexington Theatre Company), The Three Musketeers (Leeds Center for the Arts), Cinderella (The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati), Moana JR (The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (University of Kentucky). She holds a BA in Theatre and Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky and is a proud member of the Society of American Fight Directors, holding current certifications in all 8 weapons.
Karen Curry Loeffler (Monster/ Puppet maker) is a native Lexington artist who has been making and designing costumes, props, and puppets for over 30 years. She has worked with local theaters including AthensWest, the Woodford Theatre, and Voices Amplified. Her most recent work was a collaboration with UK Opera Theatre and ComposeArts, for which she designed and created a full cast of bird puppets and costumes for the original musical fable The Royal Red Bird. She is overjoyed to be collaborating with Lexington theatre legend Vivian Snipes, and the creative team at Leeds, for the mythical adventure that is The Lightning Thief. As always, she thanks her husband Robert for his never-ending patience, as her puppets and costumes slowly overtake their home.
Andrea Wilson (Stage Manager) originally hails from Florence (Y’all) Kentucky, and made her way to Central Kentucky to acquire her degree in music education. She taught in K-12 schools for 6 years before leaving to pursue her master's degree. Andrea currently is a graduate assistant with Eastern Kentucky University Bands as she works towards her Master of Music Conducting. Outside of school, Andrea is passionate for local arts and has collaborated with The Woodford Theatre, Leeds Center of the Arts, Lexington Christian Academy, Voices Amplified and Adventure Theatre. Andrea is excited to be a part of the production team for The Lightning Thief and she thanks you for coming to the show!
