State Attorney announces new worthless check program “Merchants lose thousands of dollars every year due to offenders who pass bad checks,” said State Attorney Steven B. Russell. “Worthless checks affect our entire community.” To fight this growing problem, which requires ever-increasing amounts of money to hold offenders accountable, Russell has organized a new Worthless Check Restitution Program to help victims recover quick restitution without cost to them or increasing the financial burden on taxpayers of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit and the criminal justice system. Check offenders will now have the opportunity to avoid criminal prosecution by paying immediate and full restitution and completing a mandatory online educational class. If the check writer does not comply with the requirements of the program, prosecution proceedings can begin. To submit a worthless check to the program and for more information call (239) 533-1000 or visit www.sao.cjis20.org/worthless_checks.htm.
