Orcutt’s OASIS is a Fountain of Youth There’s much to be excited about at OASIS! As we approach 1,500 members, we have much to celebrate. Today, the organization is a vibrant community of active older adults that refuse to let age be an excuse. OASIS members are traveling to exotic lands around the globe, learning martial arts, picking up a musical instrument for the first time, learning how to master the latest smart phones and tablets, getting discounts from local Orcutt merchants, and much, much more… Our center, located at 420 Soares Ave in Old Town Orcutt, is now featuring some of the most talented and experienced dance instructors on the Central Coast. Even if you’ve never danced before, this is a safe place to give it a try. Our motto is “where health, education, and

community meet”, which we take seriously. Every second Saturday morning of the month, we bring the community together for a big, all-you-can-eat pancake feed! Orcutt is a special place, and we just love seeing people of all ages come have breakfast with us. No membership necessary. Each day of the week you’ll find a different type of arts and crafts group plying their trade. Beginners are always welcome, and filled with encouragement as they learn.

Retail has been in the blood of husband and wife Mark and Wendy Steller ever since their teenage years. Wendy Steller first worked for Albertson’s when she was only sixteen years old. Mark Steller began his career with Longs Drug Stores when he was only seventeen. For the last thirteen years both operated the Old Town Market together, but now each of them owns and manages their own piece of Old Orcutt History; Old Town Market and Déjà vu Antiques at the Loading Dock. Old Town Market is a sixty-nine year old grocery store and the very first of the Scolari’s Grocery Store chain. It specializes in fine local wines, wine and craft beer tasting events, local produce, a deli, hand scooped Dreyer’s ice cream, local souvenirs, a bill pay center and everything else you would expect in a grocery store. Says Mark, “Though we are a full-service grocery store, our specialty is actually local wine. We stock the largest selection of local wines on the Central Coast and I am always happy to suggest wines for every taste and budget.” Be sure to attend a Saturday night wine tasting event where you can meet the local winemaker and ask about their affordable wine club. Wendy originally decorated Old Town Market with old mercantile type antiques, such as old scales and advertising signs. Shoppers immediately wanted to purchase these “not for sale” items. After hearing the same request dozens of times, the two of them started marking these goods for sale and hosted outdoor antique sales on certain weekends. This was the true beginning for Déjà Vu Antiques. Wendy tried to convince Mark into moving her antiques into a bigger building for years but they couldn’t find a good location. When the 111 year old Loading Dock, an original oil field warehouse for the Union Oil Company, became available for lease, Mark and Wendy jumped at the opportunity. Wendy asked more than thirty professional antique dealers to join her and Déjà Vu Antique Mall was born. Wendy stated “My vision for this store was for every vender to think of their section as though it was their own individual shop.” Dealers also use the deck to work on their repurposing creations. Wendy holds an outdoor boutique event every July with over forty outdoor gift and antique vendors. Wendy is super excited to be a retail site for Joanna Gaines of “Fixer-Upper’ Home Fashions and decor. You can check their Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/loadingdockantiques for any new items or special events, such as First Friday “Open Late”. So when you’re travelling through Old Orcutt, our advice is to pick up an award winning sandwich at Old Town Market and then enjoy your picnic lunch with a good friend at Déjà vu Antiques at the Loading Dock. Oh, and while at the market be sure to ask Mark what local wine he suggest you to take home with you.

The Rooney’s Story Being of Irish heritage, I have always loved everything Irish. Much of our inspiration developed as our family traveled to Ireland where we toured much of the Emerald Isle. I’m not sure if we missed many Irish pubs along the way, but we loved the people, countryside, and “craic,” as they say. Our love for craft beer began in the early 1980’s where finding anything beyond the basic lagers was difficult. Finally discovering Sierra Nevada, Anchor Brewing, and Sam Adams it opened a new world of freshly made, hoppy greatness.

For as many Irish pubs we have visited, we have probably discovered more craft breweries, brewpubs, and micro brews throughout California and beyond. Our love for both had us filling a need in the Santa Maria Valley; an Irish Brewpub! Although the original vision was that of a small humble establishment, Rooney’s opened in July of 2010, and has been recognized as one of the most beautiful and authentic Irish pubs on the Central Coast. With outstanding chefs, Rooney’s quickly became recognized as a “gastropub,” known for its excellent gourmet pub fare. Rooney’s is also a ‘brewpub,’ proudly introducing the area to freshly made craft beers. We turn out some of the freshest ales; Ambers, Blonds, Porters, IPA’s and other seasonal specialty ales, lagers, and pilsners. Rooney’s also offers an extensive ‘cellar’ list of fine craft brews, sharing our love of some of our other favorite breweries. So whether you are here to speak softly to a loved one, or sing loudly with friends, enjoy what the world has known for centuries. There is no better place to eat well, drink deep, and celebrate every good day than at Rooney’s Irish Pub, where “There are no strangers, only friends we’ve never met.”
