What you can see when nobody is looking

‘Als de kat van huis is, dansen de muizen op tafel.’ Een bekend spreekwoord, dat zoveel betekent als: zodra er geen toezicht meer is, doet iedereen waar hij zin in heeft. Hoewel ik deze betekenis als kind al kende, en begreep dat het hier eigenlijk over mensen ging, zag ik toch altijd die dansende muizen voor me.

Het is een geliefd onderwerp in nogal wat sprookjesachtige verhalen: wat gebeurt er in je huis, in de kamer, op het moment dat iedereen weg is, of anders in het holst van de nacht? Het speelgoed kan tot leven komen, planten en bloemen kunnen zich sierlijk in elkaar verstrengelen, een sinaasappel en een perzik in de fruitschaal barsten los in een romantisch duet. De muizen dansen niet op tafel: de tafel danst ditmaal zelf.

‘When the cat’s away, the mice will play.’ A famous saying, which means something like: when nobody’s watching, you can do whatever you like. Although I knew the meaning of this saying as a child, and understood that it actually referred to people, I still always pictured the dancing mice in my mind. It is a popular topic in many fairy tales: what goes on in your house, in your room, when everyone has left, or in the middle of the night? Toys come to life, plants and flowers become gracefully entwined together, an orange and a peach break lose from the fruit bowl to dance a romantic duet. The mice do not dance on the table: this time it is the table that is dancing.

Even as an adult there are times when I want to believe that the things around me have a life of their own. The raincoat hanging on the coat hook in the evening, that can be found lying on the floor like a mop the very next morning; as if it had been floating around of its own accord and was too tired when it returned

Ook als volwassene ken ik momenten waarop ik opnieuw wil geloven dat de dingen om mij heen een eigen leven leiden. De regenjas die ’s avonds nog aan de kapstok hing, ligt de volgende ochtend als een dweil op de grond; alsof hij in zijn eentje een III

lange zweeftocht heeft gemaakt en bij thuiskomst te moe was om op te springen en zijn lusje netjes over het haakje te schuiven. En wat te denken van de espressomachine die al drie uur uit staat, maar je plotseling toch laat schrikken met gepruttel en gedruppel? Van de fles shampoo die, wanneer je met z’n allen televisie zit te kijken, een paar deuren verder met een klap uit een badkamerkastje valt, zomaar? Of van de lelie in de vaas, die ongemerkt is opengesprongen, haar spierwitte binnenkant toont, als enige te midden van de andere lelies – terwijl je er gewoon tegenover zat, thee drinkend, telefonerend?

Al deze onschuldige verrassingsaanvallen lijken bedoeld om je ervan te doordringen dat je de vertrouwde wereld rondom je maar heel oppervlakkig kent, en alleen voor zover je baat hebt bij die kennis. Maar het grote geheim ontgaat je. En wel zo dat dieren en dingen, planten en producten, kleren en keukengerei onverschillig over jou kunnen denken: “Ach, als het je toch niet interesseert, bekijk het dan ook maar.”

Or the bottle of shampoo that suddenly falls out of the bathroom cabinet, just like that, when you’re all sitting in the other room watching television? Or the lily in the vase, that has sprung open, unnoticed, the only one in the vase to display her bright white interior – while you sat opposite it, drinking tea, on the phone?

All these innocent surprise attacks seem intended to convince you that your knowledge of the familiar world around you is only superficial, and that you should nurture that knowledge.

But the big secret eludes you. That animals and things, plants and products, clothing and kitchen utensils are indifferent to your existence: “Well, if you’re not even slightly interested, forget about it.”

Ze leiden niet zozeer een opwindend of bedreigend dubbelleven achter onze rug om, ze bedriegen ons niet opzettelijk: ze zijn er hooguit aan gewend dat wij niet meer nieuwsgierig zijn.

En daar hebben ze zich braaf bij aangepast, door alleen nog maar te lijken op de voorstellingen die wij in onze geest van hen hebben gemaakt.

Denk ik. En dat denk ik pas sinds kort. Om precies te zijn: sinds de dag waarop ik kennis maakte met de foto’s van Marie Cécile Thijs. Op die foto’s is de stilte hoorbaar. Geen afgedwongen stilte, nodig voor de concentratie van de fotograaf, en anders wel rustgevend voor de nog te portretteren dieren of mensen.

Geen gespannen stilte voorafgaand aan het geklik van de camera - deze stilte is het beste te omschrijven als middernachtelijke midwinterstilte.

It is not that they lead an exciting double life behind our backs, they do not deceive us intentionally: at most they have become accustomed to the fact that we are no longer curious.

And they have adapted well, simply by taking on the appearances that we have developed of them in our minds.

I think. And I think this since recently. To be exact: since that day that I was introduced to Marie Cécile Thijs’ photos.

The silence is audible in these pictures. Not a forced silence, as required for the photographer’s concentration, and soothing for the animals or people that are the subject of the portrait. Not an expectant silence, preceding the click of the camera – this silence can best be described as a mid-winter midnight silence.

There are no lights shining, no hum of a motorway in the distance. Saturn, moon and stars dare to shine at their very brightest, because for a brief moment there is no one watching.

No eardrums, no finely tuned fingertips, no tongues, palates and taste buds, no trails or mists of scent: the world is lifeless.
