In this proposal of Indigenous Artist-in-Residence sited in Kuching Conservation Zone, I am exploring the design strategies in translating and capturing the wishes & aspirations of the indigenous communities in Sarawak into built environment - a cultural centre that aims to push for the exploration & production of modern indigenous arts & crafts, whilst staying rooted in their cultures & traditions. As this work delves deep into the anthropology of Sarawakian indigenous peoples, the design proposal will undergo constant evolution as I deepen my research in studies of indigenous peoples of Sarawak.
This, is the completion of my 'bejalai' (meaning 'journey' in Iban language) of this season, and hopefully, this study will open up new doors into me learning more of the indigenous systems of layers of meanings and finding new ways to execute them in indigenous designs.
