Frequently Asked Questions

How will the classes be offered? The classes will be delivered in a convenient online format, designed to be ideal for working adults. Instruction will be as interactive as possible; with online lectures and videos and opportunities for class discussion and collaboration. Required coursework will be asynchronous, meaning there are no set times you would need to be online, but assignments and other activities will be due within weekly deadlines. The admission placement assessment and course exams would be proctored at your base, but all other coursework could be completed entirely online.

Where are actuarial exams offered? Actuarial exams are administered through Prometric, which has testing centers throughout the world. To find the one nearest you, visit their website: Prometric Testing Centers.

When would the first cohort begin? The first class will begin August 2016.* The course series as designed will enable students to complete the program by following the prescribed course sequence in as few as 24 months.

When should I apply? You should express your interest and submit your application as soon as possible as there will be a limited number of seats for this new program. Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis as they are received up until two weeks prior to the cohort start date. Contact the Office of Graduate & Professional Studies at 717-8676213 or certificates@lvc.edu for an application, or apply for free online at www.lvc.edu/ certificate-programs/application.aspx. Priority deadline for applications is May 31, 2016.

What background is necessary for admission? The only official requirement is a four-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university. However, the first course in this program is calculus-based, so a math background that includes trigonometry and exponential functions is also important for students to be successful in actuarial studies; therefore those students with that background will be given first priority for admission. We encourage all to apply. We will advise applicants regarding any remedial coursework that may be required to set you up for success.

How long will each semester be? Each year of the program consists of a 15-week course beginning in August, a 15-week course beginning in January, and an 11-week course beginning in June.

How much work could I expect each week? The workload will depend on your background, but a typical student may expect 10 to 12 hours of work each week. Since math-related material tends to build on itself during a course, breaking your weekly study into several shorter sessions is the best strategy. Additional tips for success in an online program can be found here.

Who will the instructors be? Our courses will be presented by our highly-qualified, full-time actuarial science faculty members. Our faculty are passionate about the success of learners and will offer additional support through virtual advising sessions using online technologies, if requested.

What happens if I need to take a semester off? The program is designed as a cohort model, meaning each course will be offered once per year; if you need to take a semester off, you can rejoin the course sequence the following year. LVC adheres to a flexible Leave of Absence Policy (LOA) for military students.

What type of funding is available? The program is approved for VA funding. Payment plans, deferred tuition billing with employer reimbursement, and other federal financial aid are also options (for those who qualify).
