What College Should Be

3

1,630 bright, hardworking men and women from many backgrounds, our students know what they want. It’s why they’re here. 4

Lebanon Valley College is for students who want:

We think college should be fun and exciting, a place and a time to explore new ideas and try new things—to get a sense of what you want to do with your life and to figure out who you are.

MARQUIS BEY ’14 Majors: Philosophy, American Studies, English Literature Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa. Activities: powerlifting, reading, and writing

“ I began college as a biology major and then switched to philosophy, American studies, and English literature. In a sense, the liberal arts embodies the Renaissance ideal: do as much as you can and do it well. ” College should offer . . .

CONSTANT SUPPORT

We support our students in many ways, from free tutoring

in any subject to writing help on any paper. Once you’re at

LVC, you’re part of our family, and we’ll do all we can to make sure you succeed (and graduate in four years).

a broad education

This is your time to explore—to try out new roles, challenge yourself, and build a wide foundation of knowledge and experience.

SMALL CLASSES

INVOLVED PROFESSORS

LVC’s caring, dedicated professors enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience. Because LVC is a close-knit community,

professors make a point of really getting to know their students—meeting with

them outside of class, attending their performances, or cheering them on from the sidelines at games. 2

Learning works best when students are involved. That’s why the average class size at LVC is only 20, and why so many classes are based on close discussion—instead of the lecture-style courses that are the norm at larger colleges and universities.

LEARN EVERYTHING

A liberal arts education is about exploring many subjects and delving into unfamiliar topics—such as economics, art history, or computer science—that you might not have been able to study in high school. It’s about using different parts of your brain, learning the basics of many fields, and, oftentimes, discovering a new passion.

a strong major

For the first time in your life, you’ll get to really focus on the subjects that interest you the most, becoming an expert and preparing for your career.

Working with LVC professor of music Jeff Snyder, six LVC students imagined and launched <R>Evolution Records, a studentrun label that provides production, promotion, and distribution services to student bands of every genre while supporting a number of service-based projects. Students of all majors bring their knowledge and expertise to help <R>Evolution function as a business—while logging real-world experience and developing marketable skills. 4

Music Whether studying theory and performance or learning the basics of music business, education, or recording technology, LVC students explore a

variety of professions

within the music industry.

DIG DEEP

In addition to exploring many subjects, you’ll choose one (or two) to focus on. Some majors relate directly to specific careers—accounting or digital communications, for example—while others build skills and knowledge that will be useful in anything you do.

graduates however they can—whether through career guidance, referrals, or internships. With 15,000 LVC alumni around the world, there’s always a friendly face or helping hand wherever you go and in whatever profession you choose.

BUILT-IN SUPPORT

LVC’s 48 resident assistants are upperclass students who live in the residence halls and help freshmen adjust to college life— making sure they have the

guidance and resources they need to succeed.

JUST LIKE HOME

LVC is a friendly and safe residential environment where students live together just a few steps from the center of campus. More than just places to study and sleep, LVC’s residence halls are fun, interesting communities where lasting friendships and memories are made.

INTERNSHIPS

Through an internship position, you can try out a career that interests you and apply the things you’ve learned in class to a professional setting. Internships look great on a résumé because employers want to hire people with actual work experience.

More than 60 percent of LVC students complete a professional internship, student teaching, or field/ clinical experience.

GABRIEL LINCOLN-DE CUSATIS ’12 Major: Political Science Minor: International Studies Hometown: Havre de Grace, Md. Activities: cross country, track & field, swimming

“ I went to Perugia, Italy, and studied Italian language, food, and politics. I learned a new culture and made great friends.”

Here are a few of the internships our students have held in recent years: designing window displays for Anthropologie researching new applications for existing drugs at Penn State University College of Medicine archiving historical materials for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission

College should include . . .

life-changing experiences Your world is about to get a lot bigger. Soon, you’ll have the chance to live and study in another country, join a professor in the laboratory, or try a career through an internship.

RESEARCH

Because LVC’s professors are also scientists and scholars, they need help collecting data, running their experiments, and researching their books and articles.

Assisting professors with research builds valuable skills and experience. At large universities, these opportunities usually go to graduate students. At LVC, they go to you. 8

MCKENNA SNYDER ’14 Majors: English Literature and Sociology Hometown: Elizabethtown, Pa. Activities: resident assistant, Student Government class secretary, volunteer firefighter

“ LVC has a unique relationship with Annville, in that students have discovered ways to both enjoy and give back to the local community.” When flooding threatened Annville in the fall of 2011, McKenna Snyder and several of her friends got involved with the relief effort through the local fire company—and kept volunteering long after the crisis passed. For McKenna,

“The Annville Fire Department truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism. My friends and I love the family we’ve found at Station 5, and couldn’t imagine our LVC experience without them!” 12

ANNVILLE

Big enough to provide the resources students need and small enough to be personable and safe, Annville is the

quintessential college town. From the Kettering

Corner Ice Cream Parlor to MJ’s Coffee House to the historic Allen Theatre, Annville’s favorite student destinations are just a block or two from campus.

College should be . . .

Not all college experiences happen on campus. You’re also part of a wider community—a place you’ll be a part of, give back to, and even call home.
