Sales Tax

For every $100 in non-food purchases, residents and businesses pay 9.10% in sales tax. Of this amount, the City receives $1.13. The remaining $7.98 goes to the State of Kansas and Johnson County.

Leawood has three special districts, each of which levies an additional 1.00% sales tax.

Property Taxes

As a resident of the City of Leawood, your property taxes support education, parks, recreation & arts, and the county and state. For every $100 you pay in property taxes, the following entities receive a portion based on individual mill levies.

BlueValleySchools

The average Leawood resident living in the Blue Valley School District pays $20.68 of $100 in property tax to the City of Leawood. The remainder is distributed to other taxing entities

ShawneeMissionSchools

The average Leawood resident living in the Shawnee Mission School District pays $2165 of $100 in property tax to the City of Leawood The remainder is distributed to other taxing entities.

I-Lan Park Playground

Remove and replace the 20-year-old playground at I-Lan Park.

Burial of overhead power and utility lines along 123rd Street from Mission Road to State Line Road to improve safety and reduce storm-related outages.

83rd Street (State Line Road to Western City Limits)

Replacing the pavement, new curbs and gutters, and installing a new traffic signal at State Line Road.

Facility Improvements

Enhancements to City facilities to improve technology, accessibility and efficiency.

Aquatic Center Splash Pad Replacement

Remove and replace the 26 year-old splash pad at the Leawood Aquatic Center. It experiences continuous malfunction during the pool season.

2026 Budget Highlights

Leawood maintains one of the region's strongest financial positions and retains its coveted AAA bond rating. This rating allows the city to borrow at lower interest rates, saving taxpayers money on capital projects.

Support for Community Events and Cultural Initiatives

The 2026 Budget sets aside $750,000 from the Transient Guest Tax Fund to support World Cup-related programming. The Guest Tax Fund also allocates dollars toward cultural and beautification projects, funded without impacting the city’s General Fund.
