As an aspiring student of architecture, I have a deep interest to learn more about public spaces, urban ecologies and to create spaces that engages with the repository of memory and experiences of an individual through various design approaches and styles. I have a stronger conviction in the power of design thinking and architecture to strengthen our society and improve the environment

The time I have spent in the university has made me realise that architecture is an assimilation of form that is aware of its context, nature and people. As an aspiring architect, I believe that typological change is critical to the evolution of architecture as it allows architects to respond to changing social, economic, and environmental conditions, and to develop new forms of expression. I have always been drawn to the idea that a building is not only a mirror image of the activities it serves; it also contains information, behavior, movements, and experience that are conveyed via the materiality (aesthetics), the organization of its purposes, and the image it conveys over time. I also have a deep interest to learn more about public spaces, urban ecologies and to create spaces that engages with the repository of memory and experiences of an individual through various design approaches and styles. I have a stronger conviction in the power of design thinking and architecture to strengthen our society and improve the environment.

THE RESPITE AT THE LAKE

PERFORMANCE SPACE, LAKE REGENERATION

Spring 2023

The intent of the program is to be a respite at the lake through recreation, community engagement, health and well being. Alongside, in order to revive the character, identity of the site, through the form of performances and storytelling, the vision is to transform the area into a social and cultural hub that Vastrapur is in need of. The visualization (at the end of the page) intents for a program: where the chaos on the periphery of the built is organized and brought in, congestion is relieved, different kinds of public plazas are formed that allows for different activities to hold in them, broader and well connected pedestrian paths, and a richer and greener experience at the lake edge.

Mapping

Spatial Strategies And Key Moves For Site

Removal of compound wall, designing a 7m pedestrian path enhances site connectivity and brings footfall.

Section Along The Lake

Corners host activities, manage chaos, and define the lake boundary. Offset path eases traffic with more parking.

The walkways of the park is rethought to be leveled so that more visibility is established between the users .

The edge condition of the lake is rethought to form triangular decks that elevate the experience around the lake.

Visualization

Concept Evolution For Siting The Built

Site with existing siting of trees.

The form is oriented to 45 degrees, to get more view of the lake, and more fronts and less backs in the project.

The public plaza is designed in the center creating 2 zones- formal and informal.

The plazas and mounts formed by orienting the form connects the entire built together.

Placement of mass on site as it faces the lake and according to the zones designed.

The amphitheater is proposed in the center and in line with the public plaza.

ECOLOGICAL CENTRE

PLACE FOR CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH

2021

In the abandoned marble mines of the Aravalli range, lies this hillock amidst the others in the site. The undertaking means to make mindfulness and comprehension of geography, hydrology, and organic science for local people and guests to restore and revive these abandoned marble quarries. The centre is designed after studying the attitudes of ‘Grafton Architects’ and in their architectural language. The building forms a new hollow hillock among other hillocks on the site, engaging in a complementary dialogue with the landscape in terms of its form and how it integrates into the surroundings, while also establishing a contrasting dialogue with the landscape’s solidity. The project explores its essence through alternating volumes, uniform yet intricately detailed facades, and situates itself to offer a panoramic view of the site, encompassing its geological features and vegetation.

Concept Development

VERTICAL URBANISM

HIGH RISE HOUSING, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, REDEVELOPMENT

Monsoon 2022 | Semester 8 | Tutor: Jagrut Patel, Dhaval Gajjar | Ahmedabad, Gujarat

The program aims at redevelopment housing for the government housing colony in Akbarnagar, Ahmedabad. Akbarnagar is a popular circle in Ahmedabad. The site is near the busy junction with a BRTS stop and the Ahmedabad Metro, a rapid transit system for the cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, under construction. The site houses a government colony with a G+3 structure, where residents have incremented spaces to their homes. The project aims to tackle urbanism in vertical high rises through health and social care- significant factors that could drive future cities. The project through its staggering form, terraces, urban plazas that connect to the city aims to cater to the above mentioned.

THE LINK HERITAGE

BED AND BREAKFAST FACILITY

The program is that of a bed breakfast facility and a book cafe among the self-contained micro neighborhoodSaraiya ni pol. The design intends to connect the tourists to the culture and heritage of the pols through its receding balconies, terraces and varying depths of otlas. While having its own identity in its structural system, the built preserves the legacy of the neighborhood by retaining the character of the spaces and the essence of living in a pol louse.

Monsoon 2020 | Semester 5 | Tutor: Kartikeya Shodhan, Jahnavi Bhatt | Ahmedabad Gujarat

Structure- The built has a composite structure with steel columns, MS I and C spanning members and load bearing clay brick walls. Flitch columns have been used in the courtyard to bring in the sense of warmth. A similar language of wooden columns and beams have been carried out on the terrace floor. The materials brick and steel were chosen for the spanning system as well, resulting in the selection of jack arches. The west facade of the ground floor has exposed brick masonry to enhance the common spaces.

The Role Reversal

Model Made As Contractor

This exercise involved switching of roles – wherein, a part of each one’s project was identified for making 1:10 scale detailed drawing with specifications, and given to a fellow classmate to construct a cardboard model of it. The key idea was to generate working drawing readable to the contractor and further resolve the details through peer learning.

THE BUNKER MUSEUM

CONSERVATION, CIRCULARITY, MUSEUM

Monsoon 2023 | Semester 10 | Tutor: Nicolas Fanelsa | Regensburg, Germany | Group of 4

The project’s goal is to turn the Divisionhaus bunker in Regensburg into a museum while preserving its historical significance. Minimal modifications will be made, mainly to add a reception area, bathrooms, exhibition space, and a storage room. The objective is to provide visitors with an immersive journey through time, showcasing the authentic dormitories and sanitary facilities of the bunker through exhibitions and guided tours. The key focus is on revealing the bunker’s existence from the outside, with special attention to outdoor spaces. A winding path through vegetation gradually uncovers traces of the bunker- made from demolished broken brick walls, leading visitors to the museum’s entrance, designed like an existing emergency exit staircase. This museum aims to illuminate Regensburg’s military history and offer a unique educational experience for all visitors.

RESIDENTIAL INSTITUTION

Nivas is a residential institute which provides training, internship and apprenticeship for architecture students. The functions (a canteen, architectural studio, workspace, library, dormitory, auditorium and a residence) are separated depending on the level of privacy required in each with the attributes of the site impacting the arrangement. The institution as a built focuses on the play and meeting of courtyards through narrow corridors- the squeeze and release concept, found in many of Mandu’s historical buildings.

WOMEN’S CENTRE, COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Spring 2020 | Semester 4 | Tutor: Jigna Desai, Sahiba

The program developed was that of a recreational and educational centre for the young women of Shankar Bhuvan, a community in Ahmedabad with the key aim to empower them physically, mentally and socially. Thus the program included a library, classroom, private study rooms, discussion areas, gathering spaces, garden, kitchen, store , day care and a multi-functional recreational space for physical and social development. The concept was to form a street of spaces connecting the main road to the community leading to women from other communities to join the intervention, hence enhancing the exposure. Spatial qualities from the community like interconnecting terraces, interaction between levels and materiality were derived to form the spaces.

Places where men and women visit outside the community

Young women confined to the thresholds of their houses.

Unsafe places for young women.

Public places where young women are allowed to go.

A community organization focused on young women aged 16-25 found that these women primarily undertake household duties, rarely socialize with friends or visit public spaces, resulting in limited opportunities for personal growth and independence.

RESEARCH QUESTION

How to make the young women of Shankar Bhuvan feel safe, independent and free in public spaces?

THE GREEN CORRIDOR

DIMINISHING URBAN GREENS, GREEN LOOPS

Monsoon 2022 | SWS | Tutor: AUDA Academy | Bangalore, India

This project aims to tackle the urban issue of - diminishing urban greens. In the past few decades, India and the world have seen a significant shift towards urban life. As our cities swell and engulf surrounding landscapes, our green lungs and open spaces diminish. This issue is not limited to India; many African cities face very similar socioeconomic, political and urban environmental issues. Through case studies and comparative analyses, this project aims to establish ambitious policy driven interventions to combat issues of shrinking green covers in Bangalore, Karnataka along with a bold potential green corridor.

MAKING PRODUCTS 09

CONSTRUCTION WASTE, PRODUCT DESIGNING

The course involved making everyday- products from construction waste. Materials such as MS steel, plywood, bamboo and PVC were collected from different construction sites in Ahmedabad to make the products. The behavioral qualities like compressive strength, durability etc of each material were studied and applied in making the product; to make it structurally stable. It was a great opportunity to learn and implement the understanding of machinery in the workshop.
