She teaches courses at the graduate level in adult and higher education and does seminars, training and online courses for K-12 teachers.

Coates wrote the pioneering book Generational Learning Styles, and authored a chapter on students with Asperger’s as co-author of the new book, The Pedagogy of the 21st Century.

Clock Hours Fee Teachers can earn Clock Hours with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for their Continuing Education class by registering for this fee. Pay this fee one time each quarter and earn clock hours for multiple classes! Mixed Media Printmaking

Learn several techniques and processes in printmaking to create a mixed media print that incorporates several layers. We will have demos during each class to show how anything from carved blocks to simple paper cut stencils can change the way a print looks. Commonly associated with Celtic or Irish art, this historical script is still in use today. Winter Birds of the Skagit Flats

Winter is one of the most spectacular times to bird in the Pacific Northwest. The river flats of the Skagit, Samish and Stilliguamish are awash in swans, snow geese, eagles, hawks and falcons.

This area is rich with winter avian visitors seeking shelter and food along the Pacific flyway. Class time will introduce you to the identification of common species of waterfowl and raptors large and small. The field trip will take you to the richest areas of the river flats, where Peregrines hunt, Bald Eagles soar, Trumpeter Swans and Snow Geese fill the air. Chocolate, and its source plant cacao, have a rich, intriguing story to tell. In this educational (and very tasty) workshop, we’ll learn the history of cacao, how it’s made into chocolate, how it’s used and enjoyed, and how to discern and appreciate its intricate flavors. Schlock Cinema Schlock Cinema is a cinematic grab bag—with something for every horror and monster movie aficionado! We’ll be concentrating, with one exception, on somewhat obscure films from the ‘60s and ’70s. We open with “ZAAT” about an angry marine biologist who turns himself into an aggressive, hostile fish-man to wreak revenge on his detractors. After that, is “The Magic Serpent,” which is part samurai, part giant monster film, and what many critics feel was the inspiration for “Star Wars.” Throw in “The Dead One” about angry zombies in rural Louisiana; and some unfriendly space folk in “UFO-Target Earth” and add the first horror film directed by Roger Corman, “The Beast With A Million Eyes,” and we have a fantastic winter wonderland of Schlock movies which you won’t want to miss!

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world, after water. It has a storied history, full of mystery and influential in global politics. It plays an important role in diverse cultures, historically, and today.

In this workshop, we’ll learn the history of tea, how it’s grown and processed, and how one species of plant manifests in the variety of teas we enjoy, including black, green, oolong, white, and pu’er.

A Continuing Education parking permit is required to park on campus anytime Monday through Friday. Please print and place on your dashboard. Parking permits are for use in any parking lot except for visitor lots. You may park in the Garage and the Southwest Lot in the evenings after 5pm. Parking is free on weekends, and no parking permit is needed at offcampus sites.
