Schlock Cinema: Calamitous Intent

This fall Schlock Cinema sweeps all common sense from the table to deliver some terrific tales of wonder and woe. First up: Murder! (1930) an early Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a juror who starts his own murder investigation when a female defendant is given a death sentence. Next, we’ll get wound up in a Mummy doublefeature: The Mummy’s Hand (1940) and The Mummy’s Tomb (1942) with Lon Chaney, Jr. Former teen star, Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210), stars in Mother, May I Sleep with Danger? (1996) as a rich, spoiled college kid who falls for a charming but obsessive boyfriend who becomes dangerously clingy after she dumps him. Before Jock Mahoney replaced Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan, King of the Jungle he shrugged on a monkey suit for Three Blondes in His Life (1961) to portray a suave insurance agent tasked with investigating the disappearance of a colleague. We take our bow for the quarter with Black Dragons (1942). Bela Lugosi squares off with The Lone Ranger himself, Clayton Moore for a bizarre World War II melodrama in which Lugosi portrays a fiendish plastic surgeon who transforms foreign spies into American businessmen. Now that’s what you call Imposter Syndrome, folks! 7135 10/17/2019 - 11/21/2019 7:00 - 9:00PM 5 ses Th Hopkins On Campus: LB Bldg Room 1131 $79

The Films of Buster Keaton

Silent film legend Buster Keaton’s work was nearly forgotten after the “talkies” took over movie houses. When Keaton’s films were rediscovered in the late 1950s, film connoisseurs found he was Chaplin’s only serious rival among the masters of silent comedy. During his career, Keaton made 12 feature films and 19 two-reel comedies between 1920 and 1929. He was a natural comedian who never repeated or imitated himself. If he played a gag more than once, it was in order to improve on the original. He believed that humor was a very serious business and demonstrated a gift for getting a laugh without being too ridiculous. Films screened this quarter include some of Keaton’s early shorts and features including Our Hospitality, Sherlock, Jr. and The General. Class meets off campus at the SIFF Film Center, 305 Harrison St, Seattle. 7229 10/22/2019 - 11/12/2019 7:00 - 10:00PM 4 ses Tu Meyer SIFF Film Center Theater $79
