TIPS FOR CHOOSING A DANCE CLASS Just like anything, no two dancers are created alike. Some love to dance just for the fun of it and some live for the thrill of competition. At Leap Studios, we tailor our programs to suit the needs of every dancer, at every age, for every interest. Our programs are broken into two options: Performance Dance Program, which is our competitive program, and Recreational, which is non-competitive.

WHAT CAN YOU COMMIT TO We honour parents knowing what works best for their own family. We offer classes in the following formats: Full Season: 10-months in duration, starting in September and ending by mid-June. Full season classes are programmed to deliver industry-leading curriculum, and dancers committing to a full season participate in the year-end recital.

Sessional: These are 10-week classes in a variety of dance styles. They do not participate in the yearend recital, but instead have in-class presentations for parents at the end of session.

Dancers in a full season class can qualify for the Performance Dance Division provided that they take the pre-requisite classes required for their level.

PERFORMANCE DANCE PROGRAM Leap Studios has created a unique competitive dance program that trains dancers to learn choreography that is performed on-stage. It’s unique in that we require less overall hours-perweek than most competitive dance programs. We do this because we believe that children need to have adequate time to commit to other pursuits: scholastically, physically, and socially.

Well-rounded children are very coachable and experience greater satisfaction in their activities!

Our Performance Dance Division has two streams: Crew and Company. Crew dancers take a full season Jazz/Ballet combination class plus one other full season dance technique class and perform one choreographic piece in one festival and recital.

Company dancers take a minimum of three full season technique classes plus their choreography workshops, and perform in a minimum of three competitions plus the year-end recital.

RECREATIONAL DANCE PROGRAM - FULL SEASON AND SESSIONAL Sessional classes follow a syllabus we develop for the shortened delivery, and dancer’s learn great basic dance skills plus have ample opportunity to exercise their creative expression! It takes regular practice to master skills and learn choreography, so sessional classes do not participate in the year-end recital. If you’re looking to add the benefits of dance’s physical literacy, creative expression, and brain development to your child’s activity schedule for a few months at a time, sessional classes are a perfect fit.

WHO TEACHES MY CHILD’S CLASS? Leap Studios has a stellar roster of Dance Educators that we train and develop under our own programs and systems to deliver our programs with consistency. Our Educator resourcing focuses on character, integrity, knowledge of learning modalities and a thorough understanding of applying concepts that correctly correspond to a child’s own development. As a Youth Protection Advocates in Dance certified studio, all of our Educators are background checked, first-aid trained and follow a code of conduct that surpasses the industry by leaps and bounds!

FULL SEASON CLASSES (SEPTEMBER - JUNE) Acro Acro dance combines acrobatics with foundation dance styles to create dynamic choreography on a solid foundation of skills. Some tricks learned include handstands, cartwheels, chest stands, elbow stands, walkovers, tumbling and partner tricks. Advancing through the syllabus can see students achieve handsprings and aerials. Leap Studios is an Acrobatique certified studio, and practices a Canadian AcroDance Certification Syllabus that is endorsed by ADAPT. Suitable for students interested in taking Acrobatique exams and/or performing acro choreography in the Performance Dance program.

Acro + Cheer and Acro + Jazz Acro + Cheer combines the technical progressive components of Acro with the dynamic dance and athletic movements of team cheer and formations.

Ages 5+

Ballet + Jazz Fusion This combination class brings together the two key foundation dance genres of Ballet and Jazz, which are the basis of all other dance styles! Students will learn progressive technique in both styles, appropriately delivered for their age and experience level. Ballet exercises give students the technique, strength and placement knowledge to learn and execute dynamic jazz progressions that are fun, expressive and articulate body isolations - the defining piece of jazz dance! Best suited for dancers with less time during the week to commit to multiple classes, but still eager to acquire the benefits associated with each dance style. Ages 6+

Contemporary/Modern Our contemporary dance class is an outlet for dancers to express themselves by using their music and movement to tell a story. It is a combination of the slow fluidity of ballet and the turns and leaps of jazz. Also including contract-release, floor work and recovery/fall techniques. Techniques from the Modern Masters will be learned: notably Graham, Limon, Taylor and Ailey.

Acrobatic skills and jazz elements combine in Acro + Jazz. Students learn single and partner tricks, stylized with the sharp and strong elements of jazz dance technique and style! Ages 4 +

Ballet Our ballet classes incorporate internationallyrecognized syllabi that we have assessed to best match our studio taught through centerwork, barre exercises, across the floor and choreography.

Students who continue through the ballet program will progressively develop strong technique, musical and performance skills. Ballet is the technical base for all dance styles and helps dancers in all other styles.

Princess Ballerinas: ages 3-4 and 4-5 Ballet I: ages 6+ Ballet II: ages 8+ Ballet III: ages 10+ Ballet IV: ages 12+ Ballet V: ages 14+

Ages are a guideline only. Leap Studios will determine the best class placement for students for their comfort, safety and enjoyment.

Jazz

Tap

This technical class is a foundational program that draws upon the ADAPT syllabus Jazz technique.

Dancers will learn level-apprioriate leaps, progressions, turns and flexibility through warmups, barre, center and across the floor exercises.

Dancers will also learn unique combo’s and choreography in a multitude of different styles including: funk, hip hop, lyrical jazz, African, broadway and more.

This syllabus class teaches beginner and intermediate tappers the sounds, rhythms & patterns of tap dance. We teach a combination of the ADAPT and CDTA syllabi using across the floor, barre work & choreography all set to unique varieties of music.

Jazz I: ages 5+ Jazz II: ages 8+ Jazz III: ages 10+ Jazz IV: ages 12+ Jazz V: ages 14+

Lyrical This increasingly popular dance style is a mix of jazz & ballet technique. Students learn how to tell stories & show emotion through dance. This class has an emphasis on flexibility, stretching and performance quality.

Musical Theatre Students who love to add drama will learn to infusing technical dance skills into a musical or story.

This class will teach elements of broadway jazz as well as explore characterization, singing and vocals.

Students learn acting technique and and gain improvisation skills that enhance their performance quality and public speaking skills.

Tap I: ages 5+ Tap II: ages 8+ Tap III: ages 10+ Tap IV: ages 12+ Tap V: ages 14+

Triple Leap Combo Our most popular combination dance class gives the student a chance to learn a variety of dance styles, all in one class! Jazz (traditional and funk styles), ballet and acro technique are introduced in this variety class. This class is the progression after Little Leap :) Ages 4+

Tap + Jazz Developing musicality is the secret sauce to dance!

This class brings rhythmic tap and high energy jazz movement together with exercises and choreography that are age-levelled and high-fiving fun! Ages 5+

Street (Hip Hop) Street is our combination of hip-hop and jazz-funk dance styles, developed age-appropriately and highlighting the freestyle flair and foundation steps of these genres. We keep it fresh, high-energy, positive and kid-friendly! Ages 5+

SESSIONAL CLASSES (10-WEEK)

This dynamic movement class gives our wee students a chance to safely explore rolling and moving under the guidance of our certified Acro Dance instructors - who will also give the parent/ caregiver direction on how to safely spot their child. Enjoy obstacle courses, fun games, and some dancing too! Suitable for ages 18-months up to 3 years.

Dance with Me (parented)

Dancing together is a precious experience shared between children and their loved ones! This fun creative movement class merges music with imagination: singing songs, creating actions and just having a ball dancing in so many different ways! This class requires at least one adult participant with the child - parent, grandparent, or caregiver welcome! Suitable for ages 10-months up to 3 years.

Tiny Twirl

This is the perfect beginning class for tiny dancers, especially for those taking their first class without Mom or Dad in the room! We introduce creative movement through ballet technique, to help children develop balance and coordination skills that suit their tender age. Using props and themes sparks our imagination, connecting fun ideas to movement and music. Ages 3-4

Leap Learn + Play

This is a combination dance and activity class in a one-hour format. Movement is ballet-based and includes fun activities that feel like play time! Ages 3-5

stories and fun themes to connect movement with music. Ages 4+

Rock 'n Rollers

A street jazz (think kid hip-hop) and tumbling combination class that keeps on-the-go kids actively moving. Focus is on building balance and coordination with popular (and kid-appropriate) music and moves! Ages 4-6

Mini Tap

Children love the loud tap shoes - so let's learn to make some great music with our tiny feet!

Musicality and rhythm are enhanced when we turn our feet in to instruments. This classic dance style is gaining popularity again - and it's one of our favourites! Ages 4-6

Acro + Jazz

Gymnastics and jazz elements combine for an exciting class: acrobatic single and partner tricks, stylized with the sharp and strong elements of jazz!

This format helps dancers improve core strength and flexibility while also enhancing musicality. Ages 4 + / classes grouped by age

Triple Leap Combo

Our most popular combination dance class gives the student a chance to learn a variety of dance styles, all in one class! Jazz, ballet and acro technique are introduced in this variety class. Ages 5+

Tween Leap

This multi-style dance class gives dancers a chance to explore jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip hop/street and contemporary dance styles. Every week is a new choreography experience! Ages 9+

Tween Street

Bring your street swagger and learn a new hip hop combo every week - top of the charts music and off-the-charts kids' first choreo! Ages 10+

PERFORMANCE DANCE PROGRAM

A SPECIALIZED PROGRAM BUILT TO PROGRESS THE TECHNIQUE, PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCES AND TEAMWORK SKILLS OF CHILDREN AGES 5 - 18

Leap Studios Performance Dance Program is

designed for dancers and their parents ready to take their dance experience to the next level! Enrolment in to this program occurs in annually in May for a September start, and is open to students age four years and up in the Crew division, and age five and up in the Company division.

Crew and Company students dance from September to June and are required to participate in three mandatory festivals in the Calgary-area plus one-to-two recitals throughout the year. More performances equal a greater time commitment and stringent class attendance policies. Dancers will be placed in classes that are best suited to their age and ability in each discipline of dance. Dancers will take technique classes weekly, and choreography classes weekly (Crew and most Company) or bi-weekly (specialized Company programs including extra choreography solos/duets/trios/etc).

Dancers who want to perform must take the studio classroom training (technique class), and then choreography rehearsals separately. There are pre-requisites to every level, as is in any specialized program. Contact our Director for more information about entering the Program.

Current registrants are notified each season what the entry requirements are for the upcoming season. Our Program has amassed tremendous success in just five seasons, and our Program will continue to evolve and progress for the sake of our students and team culture.

Areas of technique training and choreography styles include: â–Ş Lyrical Technique & Choreography (combined class) Lyrical tells a story through dance and combines classical ballet and jazz technique. This class helps develop strength, flexibility and balance with a strong ballet base. â–Ş Street Hip Hop Hip Hop is a fast, high-energy type of dance seen in music videos and commercials. Elements of jazz, street, popping, locking, and breaking are incorporated in this style of dance.

▪ Musical Theatre/Variety Musical Theatre/Variety is a fun, energetic class with a theatrical angle. This class combines dance with specialty dance forms, acting, drama and/or singing. Students who wish to partake in Musical Theatre/Variety group or solo/duet/trio choreography are required to take two or more sessions of a Musical Theatre -style syllabus classes.

▪ Tap Technique Tap is a form of dance in which rhythm is sounded out through the feet. This high energy dance form requires quick and precise movements of the feet.
