During these uncertain times, there has never been a greater need to “do good, better.” The COVID-19 pandemic has created a complex landscape that challenges our ventures, and amplifies the importance of our work at LEAP. Along with our partners, we are facing these circumstances head on. The LEAP community — donors, sector partners, team members and volunteers — has worked together to help steer our ventures through this volatile time. We take great pride that our approach to scaling and supporting the most impactful social ventures is working; despite the obstacles our ventures faced this year, many reached new milestones and even surpassed their impact targets. Now, more than ever, we at LEAP continue to focus on creating a healthier future for all Canadians. In October, we welcomed the newest cohort to our portfolio, almost doubling the number of high-impact ventures that we partner with. Our second accelerator, Healthy Futures, will scale 11 high-potential social ventures focused on preventing the unhealthy behaviours contributing to chronic diseases affecting 6

Canadians, a concerning trend that has been magnified during the pandemic. Together, we have found resilience in times of crisis. This year we delivered more economic impact than any year previously, an achievement that would not have been possible without the strength of our partnerships. Up With Women provides at-risk women with a unique, in-depth and intensive program of career coaching, group support sessions, emotional assessment tools, and soft skills development to support their clients in building sustainable, prosperous careers and businesses to become fully financially independent. Teach For Canada works with northern First Nations to recruit, prepare and support committed teachers; tackling the difficult twin challenges of teacher supply and systemic inequalities that produce a statistical education gap between First Nations and non-First Nations students. SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY IN 2020 COVID-19 In response to the pandemic, LEAP strengthened supports for our portfolio community to increase resilience, deepen collaboration and share learnings.

LEAP staff collaborated one-on-one with venture leaders to develop and implement strategies for their specific organizations during this challenging time. BCG summer students were staffed full time with select organizations to provide strategic support on time-sensitive initiatives.

Diversity & Inclusion

Through these conversations, LEAP identified topics for a recurring series of Community Calls: LEAP’s sector partners and leaders in the social sector led workshops to share evolving practices across a variety of topics, ranging from technology for collaboration to change management and fundraising during a crisis. Our workshop leaders and LEAP staff regularly supplemented the workshops with online materials, resources, and tools to extend the knowledge sharing for our ventures.

At LEAP, we understand that philanthropy alone does not create a change in power structure. To that end, we remain committed to fostering an organizational culture where every voice is welcome, heard and respected. As we continue to scale diverse social organizations that reflect the cultural needs of communities, we are also looking within, to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our organization. We look forward to building on this work as we look ahead to 2021. 19


HEALTHY FUTURES: OUR NEWEST ACCELERATOR

The Need for Action report, authored by LEAP in a research partnership with BCG, details the serious implications of the rise of chronic diseases in Canada and identifies three preventative health interventions within the Canadian healthcare landscape that have the greatest potential to create

In May 2020, with financial contribution from the Public Health Agency of Canada, LEAP launched Healthy Futures, our second accelerator program, which supports innovative social ventures that help to prevent the unhealthy behaviours contributing to chronic diseases affecting Canadians. More than 150 high-calibre applicants responded to our call for action. Over the course of four months, through a rigorous, data-driven assessment, LEAP staff, board, investment committee and a panel of experts identified each venture’s potential for impact. The outcome was the selection of 11 diverse ventures that will drive meaningful change in public health in Canada. We have ambitious goals for the Healthy Futures Accelerator. Currently, the 11 ventures combined serve 599,167 Canadians annually across all provinces and territories. With LEAP’s in-depth strategic and operational support, coaching and capacity building, the cohort will scale its impact to improve the lives of 2M+ Canadians annually. 20

Amongst its findings: • Chronic diseases are on the rise in Canada — increasing at a rate of 14% per year — and have an estimated annual economic burden of $190 billion. • Large numbers of Canadians are engaging in harmful habits: more than 40% of Canadians fail to meet physical activity guidelines, more than 70% do not consume adequate fruit and vegetable servings and 16% continue to smoke. • There are deep inequities in healthy behaviours among vulnerable demographics that the current healthcare infrastructure does not address. • In order to tackle these serious health issues, we must focus on the social determinants of health through socioecological models and community-driven solutions. • The greatest opportunities for impact are personalized interventions that target lower-income households and Indigenous populations for physical activity, smoking cessation and food insecurity. • The current COVID-19 pandemic magnifies the urgency of finding solutions that reach remote, vulnerable and underserved segments of the Canadian population.

Challenger Baseball is an adaptive baseball program led by Jays Care Foundation for individuals living with disabilities. The Smoking Treatment Optimization Program (STOP) provides quit smoking treatment to 24,000 people each year across Ontario. STOP uses data-driven approaches and a software application to treat patients directly or through partnerships with community healthcare organizations. STOP is housed in CAMH, a leading research hospital for addictions and mental health. STOP has an ambitious goal to grow nationally and expand its reach from 270,000 people treated so far to 2 million Canadians who smoke, and in partnership with LEAP will identify a sustainable growth model to achieve these goals.

Youth4Change is a proposed advocacy and education initiative conducted through a partnership between The Lung Association of Saskatchewan, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and The Students Commission of Canada. Though a multipronged approach that includes education, prevention, and cessation initiatives, the project will target youth and young adults to reduce smoking rates within First Nations communities.

Strategic guidance and funding from LEAP will allow Youth4Change to define and develop tools to support programming in 74 Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan. Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue charity with a dual mission of hunger relief and environmental protection. It recovers nutritious, perishable surplus food from more than 2,000 donors and redistributes it to a broad network of 2,300+ social service organizations across Canada. This free, essential service helps nourish people through school programs, seniors’ centres, shelters, food banks, and regional food hubs. With support from LEAP, Second Harvest will expand its webbased application to improve efficiencies, develop a national infrastructure program to reach more rural communities, and renovate a new facility to support the volume of food rescued.
