AR2Tech joins Seequent

none of us will soon forget. The recently shared results for 2021 are tremendous! It’s incredible what we managed to accomplish together.

We’ve experienced so much change and growth in such a short period of time. We completed a successful FY21 Q4, an energizing Hack Yeah, joined Bentley, and brought 4 new businesses into the team. We grew our team by 311 new talented people. We’re a team of 640 now! And we haven’t just grown in numbers. Nearly 100 Seequenteers changed roles this year within the team – taking on new opportunities, honing new skills.

2021 was a year of great highs and also great lows. I have been fortunate to witness the total commitment of our Seequent team and the difference you make - the profound dedication to the success of our customers, our products, and our teams.

I’ve witnessed tremendous courage and resilience after the unexpected loss of our beloved team members, Emma and Nthabi. This was incredibly sad. The transition to becoming part of the Bentley team, a major change we are still navigating, is both exciting and challenging. All the while we continued to face the various challenges that COVID put in front of us around the world.

Thank you for being courageous, innovative, flexible, supportive, and resilient in the face of challenge. And thank you to your loved ones, for sharing you with us every day on this journey.

Credit for our achievements should most definitely be extended to them.

Henry Ford said “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” That couldn’t be truer here for us this year.

Seequenteer Spotlight - David Knight A glimpse into the lives of our people & what they are passionate about.

eople always ask me why I joined the Naval Reserve, but I honestly don’t have a good answer to that question!

It’s much easier to explain why I’ve stayed in active service for so many years – and no, it’s not because of the amazing government salary.

The primary role of the Naval Reserve is to engage with the local community – a responsibility that hit us like a ton of bricks during the Christchurch earthquakes. After the big one hit, we joined forces with the Police, the Army and the Air Force to guard the numerous cordons around the city and to provide reassurance to the public. Other duties include supplementing the regular-force Navy during overseas taskings, providing maritime trade expertise during multination training exercises, and participating in ceremonial parades. There are always travel opportunities available, including a deployment to Antarctica and a sixmonth posting to Dubai.

It’s not all fun and war games though. There’s a superawesome fitness test you have to pass every six months, and despite popular belief, wearing a uniform has never helped me with the opposite sex (or maybe that’s just me).

Overall, it’s incredibly liberating to have a part-time job/ hobby that is completely unrelated to your real job or to your university studies. I could be cramming for a physics exam by day and learning about amphibious warfare by night.

Being a member of the New Zealand Defence Force for so many years has been a true privilege, and I will keep on serving for as long as they will have me.

Seequenteer Spotlight - Ashley Lockyer A glimpse into the lives of our people & what they are passionate about.

She’s also part Maine Coon and basically a dog-cat (belly rubs, fetch, kisses) which are typically very walkable kitties.

How difficult was training Cinder?

Cinder is very fearful of everything new at first. Every time we go outside, the loud cars and people scare her. However, just wearing the harness was easy for her.

Thankfully, she feels safe perching on my shoulders (more than inside the catpack). I get to walk around like a pirate with a cat instead of a parrot.

How many times have you brought Cinder on walks?

Since we’re just getting started, Cinder comes on 2-3 local walks with me a week. Hopefully, we’ll do some longer hikes into the forests where it’s quieter.

What is your hobby?

Hiking, adventuring, and wandering around discovering the world.

How long have you had Cinder for?

Cinder is a rescue who was found living in a barn in Northern BC. She was a kitten when I got her three months ago, and extremely scared of people. She spent the first few days hiding behind my tub!

I took her on a retreat to the countryside and we spent some time wandering through an estuary. It’s been a balance of exposing her to the outdoors, letting her curiosity draw her out, and bringing her back before she gets too fearful.

Does Cinder have a favourite walk?

She’s bold now and will wait at the door to be let into the hallway in my apartment. I hope to gently bring her out more and more so I have a little companion to share the wild world with.

Now, she’s very cuddly and has found her voice (poor neighbours).

What inspired you to bring Cinder with you?

She looks like a bobcat. I’d recently seen a lot of cats on leashes walking in the city and where I grew up all cats were outdoors. Since it’s a city and for wildlife safety, I think the harness is a good thing.

For Cinder, since she grew up outside, I thought it would be a great chance to expand her world.

Regional Spotlight - APAC Perth Office:

Multicultural Day

Christchurch Office:

On the 9th of August, to celebrate our culturally diverse team, we invited everyone to be a part of a “Multicultural Day” by dressing in customary clothing or bringing in a traditional plate of food.

Colleagues came to work (virtual or in office) dressed in clothing that represented their culture, background or even a favourite sports team.

There was an amazing turn out in the Christchurch office with delicious contributions from all corners of the globe. From Portuguese Cod Pie to German Sausages, from traditional Sri Lankin sweets to the Kiwi classic; Lolly Cake - the day was a culinary hit!

The APAC team in Perth joined in with cheese rolls, fairy bread and in true blue Aussie style - a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle.

In the absence of travel, what a better way to learn about our different cultures than through the medium of food!

Women’s Leadership Circle

Women’s Leadership Circle: A Year in Review with Jo Knight & Lorraine Godwin

It began with us talking about the important role mentors have played in our career paths. This sparked the idea of “paying it forward” to create a connected environment of women supporting and mentoring one another across our Seequent global offices. With the support of the CEO and HR behind us, thus began the Women’s Leadership Circle or WLC – an empowering community to create meaningful relationships, expand leadership skills and career paths, and provide mentorship, allyship, support, and inspiration to improve diversity, inclusion, and equality.

The past year has far exceeded our expectations. We’ve been thrilled to see WLC expand and evolve through the passion and enthusiasm from our members who continuously bring forward amazing ideas and speaker suggestions.

Since WLC’s inception, over 170 women and men have joined our #womensleadershipcircle Slack group, we’ve had 9 external and 13 internal speakers/panelists, our members set up an O365 collaboration site and Teams group – and we even have our own logo which was conceptualized and designed by WLC members!

Our circle continues to increase even further as we connect with the Bentley Network of Women (NOW) and Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Alliance (IDEA) groups who have been undertaking their own remarkable initiatives. We look forward to an exciting and empowering future of joining forces together!

Wellbeing – Mind

Mindfulness with Iain McLean Read Iain McLean’s, EVP NAM, testimonial below on how he incorporates mindfulness into his everyday routine.

Can you share your experience with mindfulness and/or meditation?

I started meditating back in my undergraduate days at Imperial College where I used TM [meditation] to help me learn to focus and concentrate. I continued using TM through my 20’s and 30’s especially when working in stressful conditions underground and later when I was traveling every week - as soon as the plane pushed back from the gate I would meditate just to manage the stress.

What are some of the benefits of these practices?

There are so many benefits from meditation but perhaps the most significant is the ability to unclutter the mind and be in the moment. Taking a few minutes every day to be grounded and centred in a disciplined way has a great impact in how you handle the stresses that daily life throws at you. If, through your practice, you can recognise how you respond to certain stimuli and manage situations better. The methods have always helped me prepare for giving a talk, for building empathy and recognising the stress that other colleagues feel or even for focusing to perform better in a sport - my golf game has benefited a lot from an ability to control my breathing.

Any tips for getting started?

People sometimes worry that if they become calmer then they might ‘lose their edge’! Of course the whole point of mindfulness and being in the moment is better understood today as being the exact opposite of losing an edge - it’s actually what provides an added ability to focus on what is in front of you with less distractions. I would say just sit down, put on some headphones and see what happened when you commit to setting aside 10 minutes to getting grounded. You will be amazed at how it can help you in so many aspects of your life.

How do you incorporate mindfulness into a busy work day?

I use the App every morning just before my breakfast - 10 minutes in a quiet space. I sometimes repeat it straight after my last call of the day - although my dog prefers that I take him out first!

We are excited to offer a Headspace membership to all Seequent Team members.

What aspect of the Headspace have you enjoyed so far?

Headspace is an easy-to-use app where you can anonymously access meditation, sleep support, exercise sessions and help resources to promote mindfulness.

Having guided meditation and being given new tools to centre on the breath is great. Plus the stories to help you sleep are wonderful at just calming the brain.

Over 200 team members have already taken the opportunity and registered for their complimentary account and reaping the benefits.

Wellbeing – Body Mud, Sweat, and Tears On the 15th of August, a brave group of 20 from our Christchurch office entered the gruelling Mud Sweat and Tears challenge. The challenge saw the team run (or walk) 6km over a rugged hill, through pine tree plantations and of course into some muddy marshes all based at the Christchurch Adventure Park.

The course included a variety of mudslides, forest runs, fireman’s pole, a crawl under a sea of barbed wire, water jumps, wobbly bridges and many mud pits.

Thanks to all those who competed, Joana Hunter, Aimee West, Stephen Gallagher, Thomas Heath, Steph Beaumont, Hannah Maloney, Mike Cowie, Thad Rusmussen, Calvin Broadhurst, Peter Graham, Callum O’Brien, Sam Law, Elliot Crosby, Louis Bortolozzo and Tim Hamblin.

A special thanks to Steph Beaumont who rallied the team together and to Tracey Williams and Elliot Chow who provided the team with a post-race sausage sizzle.
