The objective of this group project is to question the point of view of the architect on the contemporary urban territory of which he is one of the leading actors of the problematization and demonstration, even before being able to operate its transformation.

The key problematization of the urban territory as "inhabited area", the critical distance and analytical view of this modality are real challenges for a reflection to be led.

With all their diversity, scientific analysis and mapping are the traditional tools for the identification and understanding of urban phenomena.

But for the architect, it is primarily the representation of the phenomenon and the revelation of its concrete form, at some point, that will allow any strategic transformation.

Choosing the words and the tools to describe and to represent a territory, is as much to regenerate it than to generate it, to reactivate it than to activate it.

So we purposedly chose the concept of "urban landscape" rather than "territory" with the postulate that its first approach already contributes to its transformation..

If as defined, the thematic project environment is this "urban landscape" and if the project’s process moves slightly in its terms, our proposal remained relatively and specifically architectural. For this is a building project that is the focal point of the work, and it is this proposed building that will ultimately testify, with its uniquely built shape made of multiple layers, of our view of the territory.

Our first task was to wonder how to transcribe the memory of a place, its identity. We thus chose to collect imprints of the ground through the touch, in reference to the quote from Maurice Merleau-Ponty *.

Based on our samples, we were able to recreate 3D dimensions through software processing. By making virtual sections on these samples, we so obtained a fragment, a layer or sediment of a city, that we thereafter resynthesized by laser cutting and then molding according to a plaster prefabrication process. This allowed us to create equally dimensioned modules but with different patterns depending on sections of the samples.

Given the shape and geometry of these modules, we chose to create a station, which only the entrance emerged from the ground.

This choice allowed us then to wisely assemble these modules to form platforms with circulation areas, shelter spaces and shops.

The final aspect of the project is quite monolithic, cavernous, and thus evokes the very basis of our approach, namely the study of the soil.

As a requirement based on a problematic put forward by an author (also writer and painter) spaces can be projected.

Thus, students can isolate a suitable direction to allow the passage from a ‘’key idea’’ (according to a Louis I. Kahn expression) to its representation. The project then becomes a chain of progress allowing the articulation of architectural shaping from sketch to final representation.

Based on an extract of a poem by Paul Eluard* which evoked the imagery of chaos, fragmentation and assembly, I first made a sensible approach using these words.

The appearance of the model in fragments of broken glass is what conducted me to the architectural project. *"Je ramasse les debris de toutes mes merveilles. C’est la grande femme qui m’a dit que ce sont des debris de merveilles, ces debris."

The plan thus breaks up into different volumes which occur in one operation, addition and subtraction of fragments, which are inserted in the different living areas of the house.

The meeting of these volumes, with their varying shapes and sizes is what gives a scultpture appeal to the house.

Nicolas Schoffer Museum, Paris, France

Nicolas Schoffer, born September 6, 1912 in Hungary, died on January 8, 1992 in Paris, is a French artist and sculptor.

He is one of the main actors of kinetic art, but especially of cybernetic art, now called interactive art, realizing the first real-time works in the history of Art. "Spatiodynamism must intervene and even deeply upset in many points common concepts of architecture and urbanism.

It is the sculptor who will establish the plastic conditions of any architecture. The city shall be the extension of the plastic sculpture, which on the public space, will replace the old cathedrals, and become the hallmark of the city but also the condensed and highly aestheticized summary of its rhythms.

By all logics the overall process is designed by the sculptor. Architects have functional problems to solve and so become true building engineers.

But to avoid any misunderstanding by also remembering to Phidias, Frank Lloyd Wright or Gropius, these great architects sculpteurs- I put everything in the camp of these sculptors who give primacy to plastic where the functional will be made easier when aesthetically successful works provide the best functional solutions.

But the real solution lies in a genuine collaboration between the sculptor who is a sculptor and architect who is the architect."

The museum project for Nicolas Schoffer focuses on three main points: Dynamism Light

Movement It organizes itself by rippling walls, around of which the visitors come to roam and containing the various spaces of exhibition.

It allows to organize the course, to contain flows and also to give this impression of movement inside the museum, through the phenomenon of space’s expansion / compression.

The roof, formed by vertical blades spaced out regularly, casts a split up, sequenced natural light. We can thus talk about spatiodynamism, with the meaning that it creates a very particular plastic effect, which moreover differs according to the moments of the day.

The whole project is contained in a totally opaque outer envelope, which marries the site’s shape and comes to mark a strong element of the landscape, thus posing as a sculpture, a landmark in the city.

This project approaches the urban scale and the question of the urban systems in connection with the uses of the digital tools for spatial conception. The digital tool is used here both for the construction of a programmatic system and for the development of an innovative urban and architectural writing.

Starting from the theme of the alive, it was a question at first of making an analysis of images, to release a concept of it, a dynamic, a possible support for an urban project.

I chose to handle the movement, in reference to Engels for whom it is the material’s form of existence.

Thanks to the technique of the chronophotography, I was able to highlight two important aspects which we find in the images: the sequencing by the decomposition in points, the continuity and the reorganization of the movement by connecting these points. By combining the various obtained results, I was able to realize a 3D model of this work. I thus built a meshing, based on the contrast of the blacks and the whites in the image.

My keywords were thus: sequence, continuity, density.

Thanks to these words, I was able to make an oriented analysis of our project area, which allowed me to highlight the perimeter on which it was sensible to intervene. We indeed notice that the chosen site represents a break, both in terms of urban fabric and circulations.

By inserting in a raw way the 3D model obtained on this site, I was able to begin to work on an adapted urban shape. We can recognize the idea of sequencing by the rhythm of the built, the continuity by the succession of sequences and the density by the variation of height of the built.

The next step consisted in deepening the preliminary step, in relation to city policies and Bruneseau’s neighborhood.

The stakes of this site are numerous but the most obvious seems to be to restore the connection between Paris and its suburbs, and think about the project’s urban integration in these two territories. It must be understood that this sector is changing now.

Despite of this, everything remains very heterogeneous. Car traffic is complicated since there are simultaneously many boulevards and the ring road which intermingle, pedestrian traffic is thereby consequently affected; public transports are difficult to identify because scattered in all directions, not to mention the total absence of commercial activities for the walkers. Ultimately, there is a lack of hierarchy in the flows and landmarks that could give an identity to the neighborhood.

Yet, there is a real potential of transformation if it is based on the existing state.

The presence of the old railway line, now seen as a breaking element (functionally and visually talking), could be very useful considering that the site is between Paris and outside of the Austerlitz station. The river’s banks are also a remarkable feature in the landscape, which could represent an advantage in terms of uses and tourist attraction, for now they are totally lifeless and difficult to access. Therefore, mobility, intermodality and mix of uses represent a line of work, because omnipresent in the political speech for future cities.

In reference to the movement, my project oriented itslef toward creating a HUB. HUB: Connection platform, pole, hub, central point of a transport network. It ensures maximum correspondence by its concentration

«We choose to focus on the sensual dimension of the Grand Paris’ stations: their will, the emotion they arouse, the impression they leave in the mind, the story they tell. « Beyond the built space and the station facilities, it is for Jacques Ferrier to create continuity between the underground and the city public life. Today stations are both circulation and communication spaces, places of life, socialization and exchange, including commercial and non-commercial services.

The consortium led by Jacques Ferrier offers a high level of services in the stations to improve the match between «designed spaces» and «lived spaces». This place’s treatment reflects the transition from an architecture geometry to an architecture atmosphere, which makes it possible to share a new way of being in the station.

Personal and professional times accelerate, break up and are becoming incompatible with each other. The station must thus effectively manage the diversity of new metropolitan rhythms. The transport network is then an element of the reconfiguration of the temporal shape of the territory, in which the stations are places to simplify the time.

MULTIMODALITY: Multimodality allows to consider simultaneously the different transport channels. In the field of people transportation, the concept of multimodality is used to describe the behavior of users who compare the transport modes with different point of views (convenience, cost, speed, safety, environmental impact) and choose accordingly. the multimodal information is intended to provide elements to make these choices, which should lead to a better use of available capacity.

The proliferation of transport modes used by city dwellers should be seen as a positive phenomenon to a renewed strategy for integrating transport.

The objective must be to facilitate mobility and improve the conditions of its realization by combining several transport modes.

The experiences of many cities around the world show that a transport strategy based on a single mode of transport, the car often, and does not take into account the plurality of requests from citizens, is doomed to failure. If one wants to think of mobility as a whole, it is best to define a transport strategy based on complementarity of modes, depending on the efficiency of each mode for a particular type of travel, for this or that type of space, or for a particular time of day.

INTERMODALITY: Intermodality is a concept that involves the use of several transport modes during the same trip.

Today, transports in the city are organized around exchange places, where intermodality plays: they are the hubs. These places are the ultimate exemple of mobility in the sense that they should as well give the technical conditions of the transition from one mode to another, as the necessary environment for good signage for users.
