STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale – Leah Haywood

What do you intend to do and why?

I intend to create a range of homewares with the aim to bring the outdoors in. These days we spend so much time in cities, and at home and work that we have disconnected from our environment. I aim to produce a range of home décor that will encourage people to reconnect with nature and their environment and help bring the outside indoors. The range will be sustainable and eco-friendly, and help us get away from the busy city lives that a lot of us lead. The range could include anything from bedding sets and cushion covers to mugs and plant pots but I am yet to decided on a final set of products.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs?

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Retail and Packaging Specifically Retail AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: My target audience would be young adults that live in a city. I also feel like my range could also appeal to people that have an interest in sustaining our environment and who enjoy being outdoors.

PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: In terms of distribution I feel like my products could be sold in high street stores and online.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution.

What do you intend to use the skills for? Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

I feel that in this module and throughout this brief I could push my printing making skills that I developed from the last module even further. Printing is an effective way to create images and patterns that can be applied too a range of different products. I would also like to experiment with printing on fabric and see how this can push my practice further.

I will also be pushing by digital skills further in this module, to help me mock-up designs and products and also to help me adjust and finalize my illustration work before it is ready to be applied to product.

In terms of new skills, I feel that I will benefit from working with a specific set of deliverables that aren’t just prints or publications. Working away from paper and imagining my work on larger scale products will help put my practice into perspective and help me find where my practice sits within illustration.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I feel like I have a good foundation for this project but still feel that I need to research and develop my concept more. I am slightly worried that I have chosen the wrong subject area to work within but I think it might be good for me to be working on something completely different than what I’m used too. I think that illustrating and producing products will be a good way for me to contextualize where my practice sits and help develop my practice to allow me to be able to work in this way in the future. I don’t see myself as specifically sitting in any particular area of illustration so I think trying to touch on different approaches and outcomes will help shape my practice more and help me decide what it is that I want to do.
