On behalf of our members, our partners, our honored speakers, and the LCF Board and Secretariat, welcome to the 2023 CSR Expo!
Our theme this year, "From Extra to Essential", underscores how critical Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance or ESG reporting are in our world today. These are not merely nice to have in our ongoing efforts amidst the pandemic and other challenges both old and new, but are MUST-HAVES. In fact, it is now mandatory for companies to report CSR activities as part of yearly submissions.
“From Extra to Essential” takes us forward from last year’s theme, “Creating the Future We Need: Striking a Path During a Period of Transition”, which was a call to action to collaborate to find CSR solutions that will effect longlasting change and impact in the Philippines. Moving from collaboration and solutions-finding to action, “From Extra to Essential” is a rallying cry that urges the full adoption of the principles of good corporate citizenship, accountability, and transparency through CSR and ESG reporting—and signposts our work moving forward.
We cannot just DO GOOD, we need to DO IT WELL in all aspects of our work—organization-and corporate-wide.
From July 4 to 7, our plenary sessions, forum, and committeeled sessions will unpack this year’s theme from different perspectives and areas of practice and specialization, in order to establish how CSR and ESG reporting can no longer be seen as merely EXTRA, but are no less than ESSENTIAL. And our Guild Awards and EXPO will exemplify shining examples of excellence in CSR.
Once again, welcome!
Sincerely yours,
Sebastian C. Quiniones, Jr. Executive Director, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. Chair, League of Corporate Foundations, Inc.Since 1991, LCF has been a champion in building a network of corporations, their corporate foundations, business organizations, and in steering their initiatives to better contribute to national economic and development goals. This paved the way for the establishment of CSR Week in the Philippines, which is celebrated on the first week of July by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 299, s. 2000.
The first CSR EXPO in 2001 was a watershed event that strengthened the role of the Philippine business community as a partner of civil society and government in effecting positive change. In 2023, the business community's role is underscored by the realization that--as we attempt to emerge from the pandemic--challenges such as climate change, global warming, subpar education, economic instability, inaccessible health care, among many others, hold us back from doing so.
This year’s CSR Expo theme, “From Extra to Essential”, is a rallying cry to ensure not just compliance to the law, but also the full embodiment of the principles of good corporate citizenship through accountable governance.
While ESG and sustainability reporting are now required for publicly-listed companies in the Philippines, the imperative for CSR and ESG transcends regulation.
In 2022, beset by the COVID-19 pandemic, we worked towards a more secure, sustainable, and stable future. While we are beginning to overcome the pandemic, we are held back by challenges both old and new, including climate change, food insecurity, subpar education, and many more.
CSR and ESG are two sides of the same coin: while CSR helps businesses stay true to their social commitments, ESG helps companies quantify and measure these social efforts and commitments.
We turn to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to help us better integrate concerns of sustainability and accountability in our work. Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting, which helps stakeholders understand that sustainability extends beyond environmental issues to social and governance aspects, also comes to the fore.
The 2023 CSR Expo will establish the need, the requirement and value for both CSR and ESG Reporting, particularly in the Philippine context.

Speakers:
The micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) sector is considered the backbone of the Philippine economy. Due to the pandemic, countless businesses including MSMEs closed while the rest struggled to sustain operations and profitability. Sustainability also became the operative word amid the social and economic downturn, and ESG is now expanding its influence as a survival strategy in the post-COVID era. Positive changes are coming for MSMEs. Their accessibility to information, the consistent guidance given to them, and their upskilling and capacity building training are measures that support their long-term development.

Session 2: Financial Inclusion: "Kasama Lahat: Building a Financially Inclusive and Sustainable Philippines"
Financial Inclusion is part and parcel of social development. It gives meaning to the buzzword "sustainability", on both organizational and personal levels. To be financially included implies ownership and access of resources and a certain level of financial knowledge to be able to manage these resources. This is the foundation of social development and poverty alleviation. Being financially included implies opportunities are opened for jobs, for enterprise development, for investments. It is an essential part of CSR programs and, as such, is incorporated in their ESG reports.

Investment in education has the power and ability to both improve society and drive business results. Positioning education at the core is a useful and impactful way to advance the objectives of companies and investors seeking to achieve better financial outcomes and improve Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance.

Education is not only an enabler but also a driver of ESG, as it can contribute to poverty reduction, promote gender equality, and foster environmental sustainability. It will also emphasize the need for greater investment in education to ensure access to quality education and the skills needed to participate in a green and inclusive economy, and will also call on businesses and investors to recognize the importance of education in achieving their ESG goals and to prioritize education-related initiatives in their ESG strategies.

Direct and indirect financial losses caused by disasters are rising disasters generate significant economic and social shocks. It is estimated that global investments of EUR 1.6tr in appropriate DRR strategies could help stave off losses of EUR 6.54tr. However, the current level of resilient investments does not match the scale of the challenges. The private sector and other stakeholders have been integrating ESG criteria into their work. The negative financial impact of the pandemic signals the need to address risks through initiatives such as the following: development of targeted DRR strategies; a “Think Resilience” approach to all investments; targeted investment in resilient infrastructure; aligning strategies, operations, activities with the Sendai Framework. The session discusses gaps, barriers, opportunities, and enabling factors to facilitate and scale up investments in resilience, which ensure that people and the planet are put on the forefront.
