MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN The Helen Hall Library celebrated 50 years of service in February! We wouldn’t be where we are today without your support.

The library earned the 2021 Achievement of Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Director’s Association and received a grant to become a Family Place Library™. We will be the first in Galveston County!

We are also expanding the Family Literacy Collection and re-energizing the Teen Room.

It’s time to dive into summer fun and activities. There is so much to look forward to! The theme for this summer is Oceans of Possibilities, and

I couldn’t be more excited!

League City’s proximity to a variety of bodies of water puts us at a great advantage! Library staff worked hard to bring in some amazing programs and super special prizes from many great, local partners. You’ll see partnerships with Armand Bayou Nature Center, Texas Parks & Wildlife, and the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network!

Save the date for the kickoff party on June 1 and the Mermaid Parade on August 2.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten One of the most important things a caregiver can do is read to their little one!

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide public charity promoting the pathway to readiness when a child enters kindergarten. The program encourages caregivers to track the number of books they have read to their little ones. Caregivers can use the Beanstack app to register and track books. There is a sticker for every 100 books read and a prize when a child reaches 1000 books.

Every Stitch Way This crafting group meets every other Wednesday. Bring your needlework, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or any other craft project you might be working on and join us!

June 13: Shipwrecks and Salvation Curator of the Texas City Museum Amanda Vance will relay the story of the U.S.S. Westfield, known as the “Terror of the Texas Coast,” and its destruction during the Battle of Galveston in 1863. Vance will also describe the seven-year marine archeology and conservation project that uncovered 380 artifacts from the U.S.S. Westfield on display at the museum.

July 11: Jean Lafitte’s Pirate Crew Lou Graves MacBeth, a member of the Jean Lafitte Society, will tell the story of what happened to the crew members who remained in Galveston after Lafitte sailed away in 1820.

READ to the Dogs Sculpture Helen Hall Library is honored to have a new wood sculpture created by artist James Phillips. The sculpture pays tribute to the Library’s READ to the Dogs program, which pairs struggling readers with dogs to gain confidence

in their reading skills. It was sculpted out of a diseased live oak tree planted over 100 years ago in League Park.
