What started as a small step of obedience quickly grew into something only God could orchestrate.

The Power of “Yes”

You never know where a simple “yes” to God will take you.

Nearly 25 years ago, while praying, I heard a gentle whisper in my spirit. The Lord asked me to invite Christian women authors I knew to join an online community.

“Is that really You, Lord?” I asked. In response, He gave me a sign. When that sign came, I knew it was time to act.

On the appointed day, I emailed 50 women authors, inviting them to join a Yahoo loop. To my amazement, all 50 said yes! What started as a small step of obedience quickly grew into something only God could orchestrate. Today, that little group of 50 has blossomed into the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA), a thriving network of more than 1,000 Christian women under the banner of Right to the Heart Ministries. Together, we are so much more than a community—we are a family.

AWSA provides prayer support, mentorship, and training, as well as events like the Golden Scroll Awards, Christian Market Book Awards, and our annual conference. We also showcase our talents and ministries at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention and the Christian Product Expo. And through our award-winning Leading Hearts magazine, we share inspiration with countless others.

Got God-fidence?

One of my dear friends coined a word that has stuck with me—Godfidence.

Whether in the deodorant we choose or the shampoo we use, we’re often told we need more confidence. But the answer is even simpler than that. Ask yourself, “Do I believe God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do through ME?”

Proverbs 3:26 says, “For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught” (ESV). When God calls you to something, He’s already equipped you to do what you can do so He can step in and do what only He can. All for His glory.

DAWN SCOTT DAMON: BECOMING A BRAVEHEARTED WOMAN

Enthusiastic for life and passionate for God, Dawn Scott Damon’s ministry emerged from a traumatic childhood that led to an unexpected midlife

shaking. Despite life’s uncertainty and hardships, she determined to thrive instead of merely survive her circumstances. That has led her down a path of grit, glitter, and bravery.

The Price of Silence

The youngest of three daughters, Dawn grew up with parents who did their best to live a good life, but like many families, they struggled. “Behind closed doors and smiles, behind the singing and the Bible studies, my dad became an alcoholic and an abuser,” she said. Because of the abuse, Dawn said she grew up in a fog. “I don’t know how old I was when the abuse began, but I can look at pictures of myself and say, ‘that little girl is innocent’ and look at others and say, ‘that girl is being abused.’”

Breaking the Cycle

Scripture, Dawn was introduced to Jesus at a young age, but her trauma kept her from having a relationship with Him. When her troubled marriage reached its breaking point, however, she and her husband fell to their knees in brokenness. They found a church together, and Dawn experienced a faith she’d never known. “I got saved to the bone. When that happened, I started chasing my healing with everything in me.”

Fighting with Sparkle

Dawn read every book and listened to every cassette she could find. She chased after mentors. And she jumped into serving at her new church. She got involved with music ministry, joined the worship team, and was eventually asked to teach a Bible study. God kept opening doors, eventually opening one that would set the course for her future—a door to full-time ministry.

Finding Strength in Losing Battles

For many years she did, but then, after 28 years of marriage, things imploded. Her husband left, she lost her job, and her kids, now older, moved out. Once again, panic and anxiety rushed in. Alone in her home with no support system and unsure what to do, Dawn once again cried out to the Lord. As a mother and wife, Dawn had lost her sense of identity in the “we” of her family, and she had to figure out her “me.” “I had to find out what my grit was— was it bravado, a mask, a cover up for an insecure girl?” She needed to relearn how to be strong on her own.

My self-esteem was built not on who I was or what my titles were, but on who God created me to be.

The abuse lasted for many years, but Dawn never told anyone because she didn’t want to be the reason her family broke up or her dad went to jail. She decided to silently suffer until she could get away from the abuse, but she quickly realized that wasn’t a solution. “I got out of the house, got married, and realized abuse is not over even when it’s over. That’s when I discovered the aftermath of abuse.”

Anxiety, panic attacks, and anger became normal in her life, but one day she decided she didn’t want to be a victim who merely survived her abuse—she wanted to thrive. “I wanted to overcome and flourish,” Dawn said. “I didn’t give in to victimhood that so many abuse survivors do to survive, and I don’t blame anyone who does.”

Dawn spent five hard years letting God show her who she really was. “I had to become confident in who I was, to find out that my self-esteem was built not on who I was or what my titles were, but on who God created me to be.”

It wasn’t an easy season. Dawn asked God for bravery to face her singleness, and He gave her so much more. As part of the healing process from her divorce, she wrote The Making of a BraveHearted Woman: Courage, Confidence, and Vision in Midlife to encourage and support women with a need for strength and boldness in their lives.

You Gotta Keep Going, Girl!

Whether she’s speaking to women in person, over the airwaves, or through her book, Dawn’s message remains the same. “Keep going. Keep believing. You’re never too old to set a new goal, dream a new dream, or sing a new song.”

MY JOURNEY THROUGH ISRAEL

In Perilous Times

“Aren’t you scared to go to Israel with

all the conflicts?” several friends asked.

“No,” I replied, “God opened the door, so I trust He wants me there.” Israel’s Ministry of Tourism chose me and three other Christian journalists from the US for a tour of the Holy Land.

The first week of June 2024, walking to pick up my baggage at the Tel Aviv airport, I saw photos of the hostages still in captivity, with their names and the pleas for their safe return. It caught my heart, especially since many of my family served my country. I had no clue that this week a rescue mission would bring home four of the hostages.

Shared Bonds Across Borders

One of my tour guides, Sharon, knew her son would return to Gaza during my tour. She asked how I faced it when my son served in Iraq in the US Air Force. I shared that I prayed and trusted him to God. We talked quite a bit about our sons in harm’s way.

and Arabs. They all got along. Like here when we face struggles, people in Israel reach out to help one another.

One special dinner took us to the home of a local family in Jerusalem. The mom shared how her daughter returned from Gaza just before October 7, but friends died. Her younger son will serve next year, and she’s worried. I shared my experience of my oldest son serving in Iraq. We talked and bonded, as the universal desire of moms to keep their children safe bridges time zones and nationalities.

A Sacred Journey

Soldiers stood with weapons on corners and the tops of buildings, but I felt unafraid.

My experiences touched my heart and excited me to walk where Jesus walked, touch archeological digs, meet archeologists, and see the beauty of the land. As others had told me, visiting Israel is an unforgettable experience. I heard the cry of people’s hearts to not forget them and to do what we can for the safe return of their loved ones. People I met expressed thanks for prayers and our support.

We visited wonderful and memorable sites and saw archeology that helped me when I returned and finished writing a biblical archeology book for tweens. The enlightening experience added authenticity to the book that will be released in 2026. We met shop workers, taxi drivers, restaurant owners, and others who struggled with few tourists, trying to make enough to cover their bills with so few people traveling to Israel. We strolled along peaceful streets, visiting as far south as Jaffa and as far north as the north side of the Sea of Galilee, as well as Jerusalem.

Pictures of Real Life

Fewer tourists meant shorter lines. I bought what I could fit in my suitcase, wanting to help the local workers. I tipped extra and listened to the people, both Jews

Strength in Unity

Soldiers stood with weapons on corners and the tops of buildings, but I felt unafraid. Most fighting takes place in Gaza, at the far south of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by the IDF forces to prevent their entry into the rest of Israel; or in the north coming from airstrikes from Iran that the IDF mostly destroys in the air.

Visiting Israel shows support, trust in God, and lets the people know they are not forgotten. It also means short lines to the holiest places on earth. Let’s continue praying for all hostages to be freed.

Soar Into Peace

Sometimes

when I pray, the Lord shows me these lovely pictures. I used to think these were mere daydreams interrupting my prayer focus.

I’d try to refocus, but the images continued to break my concentration. One day, in a small prayer circle, the woman who prayed before me shared the pictures she saw as she prayed. I’d never heard anyone share in this way before, but her courage inspired me to share the pictures I saw.

More Than Daydreams

When it was my turn, I shared the pictures of the festive fireworks I’d seen as I prayed. These pictures held no meaning for me, but to my surprise, the man we prayed for turned to me and said, “I know you didn’t understand the meaning of your words, but I do. This is a direct confirmation of something I’ve been praying about. I know you heard from God on my behalf.” I was stunned. What I thought were silly daydreams turned out to be a gift from God to encourage others.

so God’s Spirit lifts you to new heights of peace and purpose. He has called you to soar through your journey on His wings, to rise above earthly cares and see the world from His perspective. As the things of earth fade beneath you, remember you are never alone. His Spirit is with you—guiding and surrounding you with fellow believers.

He hasn’t called you to race or compete with the souls around you, but to love and encourage them along the way. Flow in His peace and share it with those who travel beside you. When the winds of change push you in unexpected directions, do not be alarmed. Trust Him and give thanks, even when the changes you face stir grief in your heart.

Like a butterfly’s wings lifted by the morning breeze, so His Spirit lifts you to new heights.

He has not forgotten you. He is the One opening new horizons. Embrace His peace, for in headwinds of difficulty, He is at work in your heart, shaping you and turning all things into eternal blessings. Trust Him in the unknown, and let His peace sustain you. Know that He is with you always, transforming your life into a masterpiece of beauty.

For the past ten years, I’ve volunteered in quiet prayer circles at my church, sharing these messages as God gives them to me. It’s been a joy to see how God uses them to reveal His direction and encourage His people.

His Word of Encouragement

As I was praying and meditating on Colossians 3:15 (NLT) which says, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts,” He gave me this message wrapped in a beautiful picture to share with you: Like a butterfly’s wings lifted by the morning breeze,

Lord, lift me on Your wings of peace as I trust You with my life’s journey. Let me see my life and ministry from Your perspective. Teach me to rest in the flow of Your presence as we soar into the future together. Remind me that You are with me, even when change appears on my horizon.

From Icemageddon to Destiny

As a Native Texan, I’ll never forget the February day that changed everything.

Driving home in my little red Corvette, I watched layers of ice thicken across my windshield. At first, it felt like an ordinary winter day. Little did I know, this moment would mark a divine intervention that would speak directly to my heart.

Windshields, Whispers, and Watershed Moments

Life often shifts in unexpected ways. That winter day, as I navigated the icy streets, my focus was fixed on my windshield. Then, I saw him—a runner, gliding effortlessly through the storm, clad in Spandex.

all, I wrestled with a persistent longing for something deeper.

I’ve known struggle since birth. I came into this world with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck three times, silencing my voice before I could cry. Severe asthma defined much of my childhood, forcing me to fight for every breath. My parents fought just as hard, covering me in prayer and trusting God for miracles.

When Angels Lean In

At twelve, during a terrifying asthma attack, I encountered one of those miracles. An angel appeared before me—twelve feet tall, with hair like golden dust and a chest like steel. He pointed at me and declared, “The Lord has sent me to tell you that you will be a singer to the nations.”

That moment filled me with unshakable hope. Yet purpose rarely comes without resistance. When I accepted God’s calling, I faced doubts and opposition, even from those closest to me. “Women cannot lead a ministry,” they said. My voice felt stifled again.

But God had been preparing me for this fight. My journey—from musical theater actress to hotel industry professional—taught me resilience and deepened my identity in Christ.

The King of Glory: I’m Running with His Story!

I’m giving you a platform and sending people to tell their testimony, and it will all be for My glory.

He’s got to be crazy, I thought. But as I watched him disappear down the road, I heard it—the audible voice of the Lord: “That’s going to be you in 2023. Get ready to run. I’m speeding up time. I’m giving you a platform and sending people to tell their testimony, and it will all be for My glory.”

Startled, I pulled over, my heart pounding. What did this mean? Was God asking me to literally run, or was this a metaphor for something greater? His words sent me into deep reflection, connecting this moment to whispers from my past—moments of struggle and miraculous encounters with Him.

Beyond Silence and Struggle

On the surface, my life seemed perfect—luxury, success, and everything anyone could want. But beneath it

That icy February day, God’s voice was clear: I was being called to run—not physically, but spiritually. This was a call to step boldly into the purpose He had prepared for me.

In Christ, I’ve found my true identity. He is my healer and my strength, continually urging me to sprint forward in faith.

To anyone reading this, I say: Never stop sharing your testimony. Your voice matters. Steward it well, and trust that God will use it for His glory.

Running toward Destiny

Every trial and triumph has been part of God’s intricate plan for my life. From my struggles at birth to finding my voice, I now stand ready to run—just as He called me to.

Revelation 12:11 reminds us that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. Each of us carries a story that can change lives if we’re willing to share it.

Am I Losing My Mind?

The state of disconnection and fogginess experienced after losing a spouse is often called “Widow Brain.”

I am relieved to know there was a reason for what I and many others experienced as recent widows.

Experts believe the Widow Brain serves as a coping mechanism to protect us from the intense pain and grief of loss. We may think we are abnormal because the symptoms last so long; they can last up to one year or longer. The more we deny grief, the longer the Widow Brain will last.

The Body Finds a Way to Cope

Some stages of grief are denial, anger, depression, and acceptance. We may refuse to let our grief surface, but still have a foggy brain. We may get angry at our spouse for leaving us or at God for taking them, then cannot remember the source of our anger.

The Widow Brain will exist during grief. It is our body’s response to loss, trauma, and unexpected tragedy.

Thankful for the time and healing, we can press on in a new beginning, hopeful for our future. God knows the grief and struggle we have. He knows the pain and mental fog that keeps us in isolation. He heals the brokenhearted and has an answer for what is next for us as we navigate life without our mate.

We can endure by holding onto God and His Word, letting time pass while nurturing hope for what lies ahead. We will never forget our loved one, but with time, we will rise above the grief and pain to hope again. The healing process starts by focusing on the future rather than the past.

What Is Next for Me?

Widows may have considered that question. Though it may feel like it, our life isn’t over. We may still feel married, yet alone. The answer is to stay connected to God through His Word and prayer.

With time, we will rise above the grief and pain to hope again.

The Symptoms of Widow’s Brain

• Forgetfulness

• Extreme Sadness

• Brain Fog

• Irritability

• Exhaustion

• Numbness

• Nausea

Despite a sharp memory, I struggled to recall names and details that first year. Sadness was deep, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t rise above it. The smallest thing set me off. The fogginess affected my work. I experienced every symptom.

When Joshua led Israel across the Jordan River, he guided them to something new. In the same way, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We can stay on the riverbank of grief or cross to a new life, taking our memories as a legacy.

Moving forward following the loss of a loved one, especially your husband, is difficult. Timing of grief is different for each of us. Grief is a process, but God wants us to receive His healing. He will push us toward a productive and fulfilling life as widows when the time is right. For me, it was writing a book, Guide to Deeper Prayer. For you, He will give what you need to stay connected to Him.

Celebrating the Unseen Heroes

Stacy Sanchez never thought her golden years would be spent this way.

She and her husband had plans—a quaint retirement by the beach, mornings spent sipping coffee and evenings filled with peace. But everything changed when Child Protective Services dropped off her seven-year-old grandson with nothing but a small bag and a shattered heart.

“We opened the door, and there he was,” Stacy recalls. “All the trauma, all the pain he’d endured—it was right there in his eyes. And I knew everything about our lives was about to change.”

Wounds Too Big to Bare

Parenting again meant more than routines—it meant addressing deep scars of neglect and abandonment inflicted by his mother, Stacy’s adopted daughter.

“Loving him wasn’t enough,” Stacy admits. “No matter how much we poured into him, the wounds he carried ran deeper than anything we could reach.”

Her grandson’s pain often surfaced as self-harm. Stacy recalls finding his arms covered in cuts. “When I asked him why, he said, ‘It’s easier to feel pain on my skin than in my heart.’ Those words broke me.”

When Love Isn’t Enough

After years of trying, Stacy and her husband realized their grandson needed help they couldn’t give. “It was one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever made,” she says. “We sent him to a mental health facility across the country. It felt like we were failing him, but deep down, we knew it was the only way he could get the help he needed.”

Parenting … Again?!!: A Mission of Hope

“This is a growing reality,” Stacy Sanchez explains. “Across the U.S., 2.7 million grandparents, like me, are stepping into raising their grandchildren, often without the additional support available to foster families.”

Despite the challenges, Stacy and her husband have found purpose in their journey, transforming their struggles into a mission to support others. Stacy founded the Parenting ... Again?!! community, a safe space where grandparents raising grandchildren can share stories, find resources, and connect with others who understand their journey.

“Grandparents like us are missionaries to the next generation,” Stacy says. “We’re not just raising kids; we’re raising hope. These children—and their grandparents—are worth investing in.”

She urges churches and communities to step in and offer practical support, such as:

• Support groups to create safe spaces for sharing and encouragement.

• Respite care with teams to offer babysitting breaks.

• Tutoring and mentoring for academic and emotional support.

• Host workshops on parenting challenges like technology and trauma care.

• Create a resource hub with information on local services.

God never asks us to carry these burdens alone. He sees you. He loves you. And He will sustain you, one breath at a time.

• Include grandfamilies in church missions budgets for vital support.

Learning to Breathe

Letting go was an act of surrender—one born of faith. “I had to release him into God’s hands,” Stacy shares. “I prayed, ‘Lord, I can’t heal him, but You can.’ And I still believe that with all my heart.

Hurdles to Forgiveness

As much as Stacy shows unconditional love for her grandson, she admits she’s still struggling to forgive her adopted daughter for the pain she inflicted on him. “She’s working out her testimony,” Stacy says carefully. “That’s the only way I can put it right now.”

Her daughter’s choices—substance abuse, neglect, and abandonment—ripped through the family like a storm. “I don’t know if I’ll ever fully understand why she made her choices,” Stacy says. “And I’m not at the point where I can say I’ve forgiven her. I’m still working through that with God.”

Stacy’s faith has been her anchor through every step of this journey. She recalls a moment when she was at her lowest, face down on the floor, unable to even cry out in prayer. “I heard God say, ‘Breathe to the rhythm of My love.’ One breath at a time, He carried me through.”

Though her grandson is still in treatment, Stacy remains committed. “I don’t know how this story will end, but I trust the Author and keep showing up, loving, and breathing.”

To other grandparents facing similar challenges, Stacy offers this: “It’s okay to admit this may be too much for you to handle. God never asks us to carry these burdens alone. He sees you. He loves you. And He will sustain you, one breath at a time.

What Is That You Have in Your Hand?

The pen sat on the carpeted floor, too heavy to lift. Tears streamed down my cheeks.

For twenty minutes, I stared at it, sure I was unable to carry the weight of the mantle it represented. No, I wasn’t accepting a commission to lead millions out of Egypt into the Promised Land. Or was I? In my doubt, God pointed to my pen like He did with Moses’ staff in Exodus 4:2 and asked, “What is that you have in your hand?”

Not Just Another Stick

The staff was an ordinary stick—likely a big one that could fend off a lion attacking sheep—but still a stick, nonetheless. God demonstrated His power by turning wood into a snake. What did Moses do? He ran from it. Is that what I was doing?

God uses our ink-filled stick to yield His power. It can bless or curse, formalize a birth certificate or a last will and testament, draft a love note or a suicide note. With God’s power, the pen declares God’s righteousness, delivers the lost from sin to hope, or just entertains in a way that brings the fruit of God’s love.

The Power to Bless or Curse

With our pens, we illustrate the consequences of disobedience—the plagues God put on Egypt. We can raise our pens and voices to part the sea and lead His people into a land of hope.

But what if we deliver a message God didn’t give us? Moses struck the rock to bring forth water for his thirsty sojourners, but God had instructed Moses to only speak to—not strike—the rock. Moses’ disobedience blocked his path to the Promised Land.

5 Reasons We Should Disciple Our Children

When my family lived in Taiwan, each

Christmas and Easter I went into schools and shared about Jesus. One of the first times, I was speaking to some kindergarteners, and I said, “You know how your parents love you even when you do something wrong?” Every child shook their head NO. It broke my heart. I shifted gears, remembering the culture I was in. These children had learned already that love was earned and could easily be lost in their culture. Imagine their surprise as I shared about God’s grace and unconditional love.

That day showed me how much our children internalize what we and our cultures teach. It also solidified my conviction that we must disciple our children as early and as often as possible.

We have compelling reasons I call the “5 Ts” of why we must disciple our children:

topics of our day with our children (in age-appropriate ways, of course). If we don’t, they will likely find the information elsewhere.

3. We want TRUTH in our children’s hearts. If we don’t teach them what truth is and how to discern truth, the world will happily step in and teach them the lies of our generation that hurt and mislead.

4. We give our children TOOLS for living a successful life. When we disciple our children, we teach the gospel, the ways of God, and the morals He set. The Bible is clear that when we follow Christ and His ways, we will find meaning in life. We can empower our children—or at least give them the opportunity—to choose a great life.

Imagine their surprise as I shared about God’s grace and unconditional love—something they had never experienced before.

1. God TOLD us to disciple our children. Quite simply, if we don’t, we’re disobeying him. Deuteronomy 6:1–9 and Matthew 28:19–20 are the first Scriptures to come to mind, but especially Deuteronomy 6:7: “Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up” (NLT). God clearly commands parents to teach their children what they have learned while doing life together.

2. We set the TREND. When we are the first ones to teach our children, and we are willing to talk about anything with them, they learn to trust us and to come to us first with their questions. We must tackle the

As parents, we aren’t just trying to raise good kids. Our goal is to raise amazing adults who love God and serve Him with all their hearts, adults who make good citizens and parents for the next generation. In doing so, we give the world a great blessing, a treasure that will help build a future filled with hope.

The reasons to disciple our children are clear. It is a sacred calling and a necessity for the future. However, sometimes we find the how-to daunting. I have a whole list of “Ts” for how to disciple our children, but I’ve also written a book to help parents disciple the young children in their lives. It is called Up, Down, and All Around, and I hope you’ll find it encouraging and helpful in following the calling God has given us.

Surrendered & Ready for Battle

Spiritual warfare is real. According to 2 Corinthians 4:18, the spiritual realm is even more real than the physical world.

But it’s challenging enough to do battle with the devils we can see, let alone the ones we can’t.

Is it possible for Christians to stand up against spiritual attacks and make a difference in the world? In our families? Our churches? Our jobs? According to author Debra A. Elrod, it’s more than possible. It’s why we’re here.

From the Army to the Marketplace

A United States Army veteran and a former executive from the automotive manufacturing industry, Debra accepted God’s call to leverage her 30-plus years of business experience to help Christian business owners. Debra founded Narrow Gate Now Ministries, Inc., in 2020, a nonprofit ministry devoted to teaching biblical

business principles in the marketplace. She also founded Propel Industries, Inc., a business development firm targeting the automotive manufacturing sector.

“The Lord revealed that my calling was in the marketplace, yes,” she said, “but He also revealed that my calling was in the church, to get the church to wake up.”

A Story Born from Loss and Faith

Debra knew she had experiences to share, but she didn’t expect that God would ask her to write a book about it.

Between her radical salvation experience in 2005 and when she began writing a Bible study in 2017, Debra walked through a season of tremendous grief. Despite everything she lost, she stayed in step with Jesus and came out the other side stronger and closer to God than she’d been before. When God began rebuilding her life, she understood exactly what she needed to write.

“Everybody needed to know this story,” she said. “I just shared what the Holy Spirit had taught me through His Word.”

Battling for Breakthrough

Writing the Bible study was a long, arduous process, fraught with spiritual warfare that manifested in mental, emotional, and even physical attacks.

With this revelation, Debra immediately questioned: “Does that mean I’ll write more books? I don’t even know how to write one book, let alone many. And who wants to read a book about surrendering?”

She didn’t argue with Him, though. She chose to believe that if He’d called her to do it, He would equip her along the way.

“Believers are out in the world fighting dark forces we didn’t even know we had to fight,” she said. “We’re not supposed to be hiding. We should be pressing on because Jesus is with us.”

The Greatest Teacher

Even with her extensive professional and personal experience, Debra is quick to remind others that she isn’t the one they should look to for guidance.

We’re not supposed to be hiding. We need to press on, standing firm in faith, because Jesus is with us.

“The Lord showed me how spiritual warfare was different from what I’d been taught in the church to expect,” Debra said. “Demons infiltrate our soulish realm, our mind, our emotions—not getting into our spirit but creeping into the outer courts of our temple. This was more significant oppression than I had ever learned about, and I realized the Lord was showing me what chapters to include in the study.”

Debra focused on crafting a resource for believers confronted with spiritual oppression. Even though writing wasn’t in her wheelhouse, she surrendered her will to God and let Him guide her.

That act of surrendering led to another revelation: God

“The greatest teacher we have is the Holy Spirit,” Debra emphasizes. “You don’t need anyone else to teach you, according to 1 John 2:27. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you, and He will take you where you need to be. He knows where the healing needs to be done, deep within you where no one else knows.”

This conviction fuels Debra’s dedication to helping Christians deepen their relationship with the Holy Spirit and live lives fully surrendered to God’s will. Through her ministry and writing, she encourages believers to embrace a transformative journey of faith, discovering wholeness, joy, and peace in Christ.

A SAFE PLACE FOR SINGLE MOMS & THEIR CHILDREN

Four-year-old Ben arrived at our door

one night, escorted by a police officer. He wore only a T-shirt, shorts, and stained socks. Lines of dirty, dried tears streaked his cheeks. Soft blue eyes stared up at me. The officer brought Ben into our home, carefully turned the boy around, and lifted his shirt. Ben’s back and legs were covered with red welts from neck to ankles from the wire end of a fly swatter wielded by his mom’s live-in boyfriend.

The Faces of Abuse

As a foster family for over 18 years, this was not the first time we had received a child so abused. We fostered many children removed from abusive or neglectful parents. Almost every child we welcomed as foster parents was being raised by a single mother.

The Birth of McKenzie Home Project

The McKenzie Home Project was born from this need. Women were staying in abusive relationships simply to avoid homelessness. They lacked the resources to build a better life and the education to break the cycle of poverty and abuse. It became evident: we had the opportunity to respond. We knew we could create a place of refuge for these women and their children.

The McKenzie Home is named in honor of a little girl who was born to a single mom and adopted by a loving couple. Unfortunately, McKenzie was diagnosed at 14 months with leukemia and passed away at age five. The home is an eighteen-milliondollar project, and we are halfway into the first phase.

It became clear that we couldn’t sit idly by while single mothers and their children suffered. We had the opportunity to respond.

One year, we received a family of five siblings—ages ranging from four days old to seven years old. A four-year-old girl seemed to be the constant target of abuse from her mother and the revolving door of boyfriends. After a year of love and care in our home, they were sent back to their mother, who wasn’t ready to care for them. Tragically, the abuse continued, and the little girl’s life ended too soon.

An Open Door

In the aftermath of this tragedy, God called me to forgive—not just the mother who had caused so much harm, but to extend grace and help where I could. It became clear that we couldn’t sit idly by while single mothers and their children suffered.

In Wyoming, we saw the critical gap: there was no place for mothers to go—no safe, supportive community where they could rebuild their lives and learn to become self-sufficient, independent, and healthy parents.

A Crucial Response

The need is now, and communities can boost their efforts to support and strengthen single moms. As we work toward completing the project in Wyoming, we have been partnering with fellow board members in local towns and cities to help single moms now.

We invite moms and their kids to brunch at a local church, where they receive a brief message of encouragement. A local nonprofit also gives a short presentation on the support they offer. We provide gift cards to local restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and gas stations to help single moms who are struggling. And in turn, they become supports to one another.

With God’s help, the McKenzie Home will provide single mothers and their children the support they need to thrive and expand even further. No matter where we are, we can all help build strong foundations for single moms with love, support, and biblical encouragement. Helping them changes lives—and shape the future. Embracing Prayer

3 KEYS TO AUTHENTICALLY CONNECT WITH GOD

“What is your biggest struggle with prayer?” I did not expect the flood of replies from my readers. “I really want to learn … how to hear and know His voice.” “I struggle with unanswered prayer.” “Why bother [praying] if God is going to do whatever He wants anyway?”

Prayer can be difficult to master; we know that from the abundance of books on the subject. Prayer is simple yet puzzling. Prayer can be taught, yet there is more to it than knowledge. We try to grasp the practice of prayer, but still, it slips through our fingers.

As I follow through on my calling to help people feel more comfortable and confident in prayer, I want them to embrace prayer in three ways.

1. Embrace the Mystery

2. Embrace the Longing

Part of the reason we get flustered over prayer is because we have a God-shaped hole in our hearts, a deep longing to connect with the heart of God.

David expressed this longing well. In Psalm 27:4 he says, “The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple” (NLT).

Isn’t this what we want? Isn’t this why we pray?

As we embrace [prayer’s] mystery, longing, and invitation, we trust God to do great and mighty things.

Most of us find the practice of prayer an unsolved problem. We can make coffee regularly each morning, but developing a prayer rhythm seems impossible. We can talk for hours to a friend, but we fall short in finding the right words to say to our Heavenly Father who is closer than a friend. There is no shame in our quandary.

Even Jesus’ disciples, the ones who lived, breathed, ate, slept, walked with Him, asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” I love their honest request. They were devout, temple-going, righteous men. Prayer was a regular part of their day. And yet they knew there was more to prayer than what they practiced.

Perhaps we can approach prayer in the same way as the disciples—to not fret over whether we’re getting it right. Simply ask God to teach us how to pray, to do our best to embrace this mystery.

David goes on to say: “Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming’” (verses 7–8).

We can use the same words as our prayer.

And so, prayer is an invitation to “come and talk with Me.”

3. Embrace the Invitation

Prayer is an invitation to know the greatness of God—His wisdom, forgiveness, healing, deliverance, satisfaction, peace, protection and so much more that He gives us. “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV) .

As I invite my readers to enter into the mystery of prayer, to fulfill the longing of their hearts, I do not know what will happen because of those conversations. But I am convinced that God will do great and mighty things.

Looking Into the Funhouse Mirror

SHIFTING FROM SELF-DOUBT TO SEEING THROUGH GOD’S EYES

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, I’m more worthless than them all.” Some have said it. More have thought it.

Many of us live it. Our self-concept is flawed. We place ourselves before a funhouse mirror, convinced we are looking at a true reflection. We view ourselves as inferior to others. We know everyone is flawed, but we are more flawed. God loves us, but we are certain He loves others more. We live with a sense of alienation, a sense of not belonging.

For women in ministry, this self-concept will prove crippling. We cannot effectively serve the women we lead if we are plagued with self-doubt and the belief that we have nothing to offer. Our role is to lead them into spiritual wholeness. This necessitates our own spiritual health.

How Did We Develop a Negative

Self-Image?

Marriage and family counselor Sandra Wilson believes it began at a very young age. In her book In Abba’s Arms, she expounds the concept of “Parent Mirroring.” She explains that children develop their self-perception

from the interaction they experience with their parents and other important people in their life. Each attitude and action directed toward the child is part of a mosaic that makes up the picture of that child’s identity. Parents, grandparents, teachers, and peers all act as a mirror, and that mirror will determine how a child will view himself or herself.

Many children receive positive and loving cues from the people in their life and reflect that same image. Others, however, experience a parent’s callous abuse, a teacher’s humiliating criticism, or painful mocking by their peers. These negatives act as projectiles toward a child’s psyche and seldom miss their target.

The Dangers of What We Pass Down

God to forgive, and so we live with nagging shame. Convinced we are unworthy of God’s love or that of another, we close ourselves off from the ones we need to embrace.

Transforming Our Self-Image through God’s Truth

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8 NIV).

We are loved with an everlasting love. We are accepted in the Beloved.

Such weaponry is not barred from the Christian home. Some parents, in an effort to instill godly principles, may be unbalanced in their methods. Mark Hamby, noted Christian author and speaker on family issues, writes, “Parents who are authoritative, dominating, and controlling, always demanding more than is necessary with little or no positive acknowledgement, can indeed produce depressed children.”

Correcting Our Perspective

Every aspect of our life is affected by the image we formed of ourselves as children, whether it be true or faulty. Spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and relationally, we act and react according to the negative feedback woven into our souls. We are commanded to think on what is true, and that truth is found in God’s Word. When we meditate on the Scriptures, we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our minds. We will begin to see ourselves through God’s eyes, not our own.

Too, we must speak the truth—in love—even to ourselves. Daily we purpose to step away from the funhouse mirror and look at God’s Word for the true reflection of who we are. We are loved with an everlasting love. We are accepted in the Beloved.

As women in ministry, it is essential we see ourselves as valued and treasured by God. This is how we want the children in our lives to see themselves. This is the image we must reflect onto the women we serve.

Sharing Jesus at School

When my husband, Tom, was in high school, a classmate leaned over and casually asked, “Hey, would you like to go to church with me sometime?”

Tom wasn’t opposed to church. He’d just never been invited before. This invitation got him to a place where he began hearing the gospel. Finally, at a Power Team rally, my future husband tearfully repented of his sins and trusted in Jesus’s death on the cross for his salvation. He walked down to the center of that arena, with hundreds of others who had done the same. The result: a changed life, a godly husband, father of five, serving in ministry for the last 25 years. It all began with a friend at school inviting him to church, a friend bold enough to live out the message: “Jesus loves you … and so do I.”

A Simple Invitation Changed a Life

Because

trauma sometimes make them hard to love. But I know Jesus loves them, and because of that, so will I.

Loving the Hard-to-Love

Our nation’s schools are filled with kids who need to hear the gospel. After encountering the woman at the well, Jesus told His disciples in John 4:35, “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

There are nearly 60 million school-age children in the United States. The Barna Group reports that nearly half of all public educators are practicing Christians, and 86 percent of Christian families send their children to public school.

Christians are in public schools. Let’s support and equip them by helping them understand this harvest field and giving them tools to share the love of Jesus.

When our own children became school age, we initially homeschooled them. But by the time our oldest started sixth grade, we wanted to get involved in our local public school. We believed that because Jesus loved the students at that school, so should we. We enrolled our four oldest children in school. After dropping them off that first day, I drove straight to my first-ever Moms-in-Touch meeting and cried softly through the entire prayer time with a bunch of complete strangers. The following year, one of our daughter’s classmates, who was left in a very dangerous living situation after her mom was incarcerated, came to live with us. Jesus loved her, and so would we.

The school for at-risk students where I currently teach serves children who have faced abuse, homelessness, and neglect. They have lost parents, struggled with drugs or alcohol addiction, or faced trauma because of others’ choices. Their behaviors as a result of their

A Great Harvest Needs God’s Workers

If we were each bold enough, every child could hear someone at their school say, “Jesus loves you … and so do I.” Whether it’s a classmate in a classroom, a teacher at an after-school club, or a parent volunteer, seeds of the gospel can be planted.

Students are bringing Bibles to school, praying at flag poles, and attending student-led Christian clubs. We can and should support and encourage this work. Let’s open our eyes to see the fertile soil of our nation’s schools. Let’s be faithful to shine the light and love of Jesus in our schools. They are ripe for harvest.

Becoming a Fruit Pot

As a girl growing up in the 1970s during the Women’s Liberation Movement, I was told I could be anything.

The pressure of that statement and the perceptions surrounding a woman’s place in society weighed heavily on me as I struggled with my identity. One day I would hold a career that defined me. What I would become seemed everyone’s focus.

In my quest to discover this, I talked to God. However, God filled me with roles I felt unable to hold. As a child, I enjoyed drawing pictures and telling stories. Since these talents often got me into trouble at school, I never wanted to be a teacher. All the same, God led me down that very path.

Balancing Dreams and Realities

As a teacher, I drew pictures and wrote lesson plans like stories. I fell in love with teaching. This was what I was meant to be. But I also became a mother, and despite what the Women’s Lib Movement taught me, being a schoolteacher and mother simultaneously had

challenges for me. My three young daughters needed me home. Therefore, I left my teaching career and tried being content as a stay-at-home mom. However, I felt empty inside.

Embracing Unlikely Paths

Knowing this, my husband gave me a dot-com business. I knew nothing about running a business, but I began to draw pictures for my website and write business plans that were much like stories. Was this what God created me to be?

I grew to love all aspects of the business except selling. Without sales, my business struggled, and since my daughters were older, I needed a job to help support my family. The problem was I still needed to figure out what I was to be. I told God I would take a new job if it did not involve selling things. I knew I could not be a salesperson.

these materials to schools, sold many books, and was promoted to be the division’s national sales manager. All my talents and experiences led me there. This was what God created me to be!

A few years later, the publishing company underwent administrative changes and cut my division. My job ended. What was I supposed to be now?

The Little Pot

I sat alone with God, reflecting on the jobs I’d held. He lovingly explained that I was not defined by things He gave me to hold. My purpose was found in what grew through those experiences. From there, God and I wrote a story called The Little Pot.

Becoming What I Was Meant to Be

Then, two men who worked for a Christian publisher were impressed with my abilities as a teacher and business owner and wanted to offer me a job. I was excited; this was an opportunity to draw pictures and write stories as an author and illustrator. However, when the job offer came, it was in sales. I was asked to sell their books to schools.

I accepted the position and began drawing pictures and writing lesson plans to support their books. I gave

The Little Pot wonders why it was made and dreams of what it will be. The Potter fills and empties it and makes it into a smart paper pot, a rich coin pot, and a beautiful flowerpot. Eventually, Little Pot’s flowers turn to fruit. Like us, it was designed to be a vessel that bears fruit.

After writing and illustrating the story, I became an award-winning author. However, I knew better than to make that my identity. As God continues to empty and refill me with various jobs and roles, I remember what God created me to be —I am a fruit pot!

God Showed Up

WHEN I NEEDED HIM MOST

Have you ever had one of those days where everything seemed to fall apart?

Maybe it’s not just a day—perhaps it’s weeks, months, or even years of turmoil and chaos. When everything feels like it’s crumbling, it’s easy to believe it will never get better. Hope can feel lost.

A Family Crisis Unfolds

During the last week of December 2022, my family visited my in-laws in Alabama. Usually, it is a fabulous time. But that year was different. We both ended up with COVID. As soon as we were well enough, we left for Arkansas to face a challenging new responsibility. My older brother, the trustee of my late mom’s estate, was gravely ill and could no longer handle the responsibilities. I was next in line and would be taking over. We had a vague sense of what awaited us, but the full scope of the situation was unclear.

Overwhelmed by the Weight of the Task

After a ten-hour drive, we walked into Mom’s house—a complete disaster. Stuff was everywhere: on countertops, floors, and even the beds. Some furniture was missing, while the rest was in disarray. I stood there, overwhelmed and devastated. What I thought would be difficult but manageable was now a worst-case scenario. What had my brother been doing?

That evening, we worked to make the house livable, rearranging furniture and clearing the kitchen and liv-

ing room. The next day began a marathon of cleaning and organizing. We hauled countless loads to Goodwill, working from dawn until midnight for several days.

Adding to the chaos, seeing my brother in his condition was heartbreaking. Once healthy, he was now shockingly frail—skin and bone. The sight of him was another layer of devastation. Sorting through Mom’s belongings, meeting with lawyers, grasping the enormity of the estate, and facing my brother’s decline—it felt insurmountable.

Finding Hope Amid the Chaos

By midweek, the house was ready for a realtor, and by Friday, it was officially on the market.

me that He would provide everything I needed. Thirty minutes later, I was at the kitchen table reviewing five offers on the house—all above asking price. The house hadn’t been on the market for six hours. God provided.

A Reminder of God’s Presence

The next day, while clearing out a cabinet, I found a baby picture of my brother and, tucked in another corner, a small purple glass bird. Purple, my favorite color, always brings me joy. That bird reminded me of the flock in Mom’s yard and God’s provision.

In the midst of chaos, God reassured me that He would provide everything I needed.

Between house showings, I carved out precious time with my brother. By 4 p.m., I was back at Mom’s house, waiting for the realtor, when something unexpected happened.

I heard a noise outside. At first, I ignored it, but it grew louder. Finally, I looked out the window and saw hundreds of birds in Mom’s tiny front yard. They covered the ground like a blanket of brownish-black snow. It was beautiful. Then, one by one, they took flight, soaring over the house in a breathtaking display. Joy welled up in my heart. At that moment, I heard God whisper, “I provide.”

And God didn’t stop providing. In his final days, my brother spoke my name—a gift I had prayed for. I spent hours with him, helping ease his pain and feeling God’s peace in the room. On his final day, I was by his side as he passed. Immediately after his death, an indescribable peace filled my heart. God’s presence was undeniable. Days later, my eyes were drawn to a floral arrangement at the funeral. What I thought were red flowers were cardinals. It was another reminder: God provides.

God is our ultimate provider. He shows up. On my shelf now sits a purple glass bird and a cardinal, reminders of God’s provision.
