The statewide Awards Committee is comprised of representatives from each region (Awards Chair). The Awards Committee members will solicit nominations from their respective Regions for each of the five Leadership Florida awards with the goal of securing at least one nomination for each award from each Region. After the awards nomination deadline (February 8, 2024), the Awards Selection Committee will review, rate, and then meet to make final recommendations for winners in each of the award categories for the Board of Directors to review and confirm. The Awards Selection Committee is chosen by the Board Chair in consultation with the statewide awards chair. Once the decision for the awards has been confirmed by the Board, the Region Awards Committee Chairs can assist award nominators with preparing the award finalist videos for the Annual Meeting. The Events and Experiences Chair(s) will serve on the statewide Events & Experiences Committee. Each Region is expected to host four to five Region events per year, such as:

• New Member Reception Event

• Welcome Class Reception (if applicable)

• Recruitment Event (e.g., Virtual Application Workshop)

• “but for Leadership Florida” Event (e.g., VIP tour of a local attraction)

• Social Event (e.g., holiday event, end-of-year sunset cruise)

• Education Event

The Events & Experiences Committee should consider at least one true “but for Leadership Florida” Experience. Committee Members may refer to the ongoing Region Unique Places, People, & Experiences List for inspiration. Additionally, the Events & Experiences Co-Chair(s) work closely with the Fundraising Chair and the Recruitment Chair in planning events and the Communications Chair in promoting the events. REGION EVENT POLICY

A. Purpose

Each program year, Region Councils may host: 1) a New Member event for local participants in the current Cornerstone, Connect, Education, and Executive Class programs, 2) a recruiting event for those Class programs, and 3) a Welcome event for the current class of Cornerstone, Connect, Executive, and Education programs if such a program is held in that Region. Regions may also choose to host additional events for members, including “but for Leadership Florida” experiences. This policy outlines requirements for hosting all Region events.

B. Requirements

1. Approved: All events must be approved by Leadership Florida staff, who will take into consideration the criteria below as well as the Statewide events calendar.

2. Mission-Driven: Events must advance one or more elements of Leadership Florida’s mission to (a) discover and convene committed individuals, enhancing and recharging their leadership skills by introducing them to a powerful community through whom they find knowledge and inspiration, (b) engage Floridians by providing essential information and a meaningful forum for their opinions, and (c) create opportunities for shared experiences that are inviting, inspiring and of lasting value.

3. Cost-Conscious: Events must be affordable and not pose a financial risk to the organization. Events that maximize Leadership Florida’s social capital to keep expenses low are preferred. Regions may seek sponsorship support from non-Statewide Sponsors as provided in Policy 402 on Sponsorship/Fundraising with permission from the President and CEO or their designee. Resources required must be committed with adequate time for planning and approval by Leadership Florida. Funds identified for a specific event must remain in that Region’s account and cannot be transferred for another use without the approval of the President and CEO (see Policy 402.) The total funds raised for a single event, not including in-kind donations, may not exceed $10,000 without advance approval from the Executive Committee. Region event planners must notify Leadership Florida with ample time to request such approval.

4. Non-Partisan: Events must avoid advocacy, embracing partisan or political dogma or viewpoints or create the impression that Leadership Florida is engaged in said behavior such that it would jeopardize Leadership Florida’s status as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity. If the event involves discussion and debate on one or more issues of public importance, the event must be organized so that (a) the presenters or facilitators involved in the discussion be inclusive of the spectrum of viewpoints and, whenever appropriate, have representation of both major political parties or related entities and (b) the content of the discussion is fair, balanced, nonpartisan, non-advocacy and educational (see Policy 504.)

5. Sensitive: Leadership Florida members serve in over 5,000 nonprofit organizations statewide, all doing valuable work to enhance the quality of life in our state. Our organization strives to not promote one nonprofit over another. Instead, Leadership Florida encourages personal service by its members. Fundraising for other organizations is prohibited (see Policy 409.)

6. Low-Risk: Leadership Florida staff will not sign contracts obligating the organization to pay funds that are not already committed. Leadership Florida has an umbrella policy that provides basic event insurance. For venues requiring higher levels of coverage, Leadership Florida may obtain a special event rider, the premium for which will be charged to the host Region.

7. For Members: Attendance at events is generally restricted to members who are current on their dues. There may be exceptions, i.e. holiday gatherings, where members’ families may also be permitted to attend, or when the event is designed to re-engage inactive members.

At the end of each fiscal year, unused Region funds will be placed in Leadership Florida’s unrestricted net assets to strengthen the future financial health of the organization.

The objective of the Learn & Lead initiative is to advance members’ sense of community and growth through value-added connections and resources.

This effort will accelerate learning and growing by maximizing Leadership Florida’s role to convene members to share leadership insights, lessons learned, and best practices as we inspire work to make Florida a better place to live and prosper.

Each Region Council will have a Learn & Lead partner dedicated to serve as lead for the initiative and work with regional members to offer related activities.

The Recruitment Committee is responsible for ensuring that Leadership Florida has the best possible candidates from across Florida applying for our upcoming classes. This committee’s work typically begins with a welcome call in December and is completed in early February when the application goes live on the Leadership Florida website. During these few months, Leadership Florida will share and update the list of Intent to Apply candidates from each Region that we have on file. We will also hold a series of conference calls to check in with the committee and answer any questions or discuss issues that may arise during the recruitment process.

Committee members assist with planning recruitment events and developing strategies to recruit members who fit the goals, mission, and vision of Leadership Florida. They may also be called upon to assist candidates with application preparation.

TIMELINE

November 2023 – January 2024 – Recruitment events take place

March 8, 2024 – Class application deadline

RECRUITMENT TIPS & BEST PRACTICES

All members are recruiters, formally or informally! With everyone’s help we can attract the best candidates. Below are some tips you can refer to as you engage in the recruitment process.

Identify the target audience.

Where are the “holes” based on Geography/Race/Organization/Gender (GROG) data that we need to focus on?

How can we best reach them?

• Online/social media opportunities

• Personal member accounts and Leadership Florida accounts – share event photos (create FOMO), share member testimonial videos

• Face-to-face/event opportunities

• Personal network (your workplace, community organization, clubs, etc.)

• Leadership Florida recruitment events

How can we leverage existing partnerships for this?

How do we follow up once we have a lead?

Who should follow up? How many times? How (email, phone, in person)?

Ensure they submit an Intent to Apply form (leadershipflorida.org/apply-or-refer)!

How do we measure effectiveness?

End goal is applications – does the applicant pool meet the GROG needs?

The purpose of the new retiree emphasis for Leadership Florida is to acknowledge that our membership is aging, and we should strive to provide programming that is of interest to our retired members. We aim to include retired members in leadership roles and on planning committees and continue to reach out to learn more about their ideas, thoughts, and interests. In turn, we will plan to develop programming based on feedback we receive from retired members.

CLASS PROGRAMS

CORNERSTONE CLASS PROGRAM

At Leadership Florida, our mission is to continually discover and convene committed individuals, enhancing and recharging their leadership skills by introducing them to a powerful community through whom they find knowledge and inspiration. We engage Floridians by providing essential information and a meaningful forum for their opinions and create opportunities for shared experiences that are inviting, inspiring, and of lasting value.

One of the many ways the organization is working to accomplish that mission is through its annual Cornerstone Class program. Each year 55 leaders are chosen to participate in a stimulating and thought-provoking multi-session educational program on issues critical to Florida, leadership skills assessment and training, and relevant information on Florida’s history, demography, diversities, and opportunities. One of the most exciting elements of the Cornerstone program is the chance to spend valuable time interacting with other leaders from a variety of professions, philosophies, and parts of the state who represent Florida’s diverse ethnic and racial composition.

Graduation from the class does not signify the end, but the beginning of a lifetime of opportunity as a member of the Leadership Florida membership network. Leadership Florida convenes regular meetings, regional and statewide, to facilitate continuing issues-oriented education, advanced leadership training, networking, and the opportunity for members to work together toward shared goals.

The over 3,600 graduates of Leadership Florida programs are men and women who serve as chief executive officers of some of Florida’s top corporations, executives of pivotal non-profit groups, and leading academicians. They are also managers of high-tech consortiums, rural hospital administrators, and leaders of Florida’s largest agencies. They own small businesses and are law enforcement officers in cities throughout our state. Their commitment to local and state communities is witnessed through their collective service on over 5,000 boards of companies and organizations throughout the state.

CONNECT CLASS PROGRAM

Leadership Florida is celebrating 42 years of educating, engaging, and inspiring Florida’s leaders and is a highly respected and trusted leadership organization. We convene a statewide community of leaders to recharge their leadership skills and to educate and inspire them to work for a better Florida. We provide meaningful forums for sharing essential information and viewpoints; we create opportunities for experiences that are inviting, inspiring, and of lasting value.

Leadership Florida Connect is the state’s premier leadership program that spans industry boundaries and focuses on educating, engaging, and inspiring our state’s emerging leaders.

Created in 2009 as a Leadership Florida program, Connect has developed into a much sought-after statewide institute for professionals ages 25 – 39. The Connect program is a highly competitive annual program where participants are selected through an application process to be a part of a “class” that travels across the state to convene and learn about critical issues facing Florida’s communities.

The program sessions provide ample experiences designed to facilitate the deepening of relationships among the Class members and thus extend the network of relationships that form the fabric of our state leadership.

Graduation from our classes does not signify the end, but the beginning of a lifetime of opportunity as a member of the Leadership Florida membership network. EDUCATION CLASS PROGRAM

Finding the path to vault Florida’s K-12 public schools to national prominence is the central goal for the Leadership Florida Education Class Program participants. The program includes accomplished superintendents, school board members, principals, teachers, state education department professionals, education foundation representatives, association leaders, business partners, and other public officials. Over eight months, the class members focus intensively on the opportunities and challenges associated with making Florida the number one state in the country for public education.

Each session provides program participants with a comprehensive look at K-12 education from international, national, and statewide perspectives to advance K-12 outcomes in Florida, with some emphasis on post-secondary education. Programs focus on educational systems, the examination of best practices, schools, classrooms, partnerships, innovation, and other crucial education topics.

The Leadership Florida Education Class program has been made possible through a unique partnership between, the Helios Education Foundation, the Florida Department of Education, Regions Bank, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This partnership recognizes Leadership Florida’s unique position as the state’s most respected non-partisan convener of leaders on critical issues facing Florida’s future. Each organization recognizes that no issue is more important than educationan education that enhances the opportunity for all young people to have the life they deserve.

Members of the Leadership Florida Education Class Program are challenged to apply what they learn in their work, whether it is in a classroom or a boardroom. The partners also intend for class members to build trusting relationships statewide that can be leveraged for the rest of their careers on behalf of Florida’s students, families, and educators.

We engage Floridians by providing essential information and a meaningful forum for their opinions and create opportunities for shared experiences that are inviting, inspiring, and of lasting value.

Executive Class 13 will be offered in the Spring of 2025.

One of the ways the organization is working to accomplish that mission is through its Executive Class program. This by-invitation-only, 36-hour program provides an exclusive and unique opportunity for top executives new to Florida to better understand the state’s economic, political, and civic dynamics, and to connect with other statewide decision-makers. Program content will include Florida demographics, history, trends, statewide economic and budget information, and interactive sessions with Florida’s top government leaders.

The purpose of this program is to provide Florida’s CEOs/Top Decision-makers new to Florida, and those recently named to those positions of statewide responsibility, with: key information that will enhance their abilities to work effectively in Florida; the opportunity to meet and socialize with the state’s top governmental leaders; a connection with other top private and public sector leaders in informal settings; an in-depth understanding of decision-making channels in Florida’s economic, political and civic structures; and, greater knowledge of and appreciation for the uniqueness of Florida, its business environment, and culture.
