TEAM PLAYERS Proudly Joining a Long History of Campus Partnerships When Jim Harbaugh (AB ’86) was named the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach in December 2014, he made special note of his alma mater’s interdisciplinary strength—and his desire to support initiatives across campus. “Across every discipline on campus, the University of Michigan stands for excellence,” Harbaugh said. “I feel privileged to take a leadership position at one of the finest universities in the world. I truly believe it is time to ask what we can do for our great university, and how I can be a great teammate.” Since returning to campus with his family to accept his new role, the veteran Wolverine quarterback and his wife, Sarah, have been contributing to the university community by building on a long history of interconnected excellence among campus entities—in this case, the U-M Health System, the University Musical Society (UMS), and the Athletic Department. The Harbaughs’ activities on campus place them squarely within the proud tradition of team-building that helps distinguish Michigan among its peers. “They’re incredible role models,” said Valerie Opipari (MedFellowship ’90), the Ravitz Foundation Endowed Professor of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases and chair of pediatrics at the U-M Medical School. In March, the Harbaughs stepped up to co-chair the National Campaign Council for C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital in the Victors for Michigan fundraising campaign. As chairs, the Harbaughs contribute philanthropic support “and serve as really important

ambassadors generating wider public knowledge and interest to get more people involved in helping us to support our programs,” Opipari said. Through his and Sarah’s dedication to Mott and Von Voigtlander, Opipari said, Coach Harbaugh continues a legacy among Michigan coaches of encouraging student-athletes to support patients. “For almost 30 years, the University of Michigan Health System has had a relationship with student-athletes, with the athletes visiting Mott Hospital patients,” Opipari said. In May, the couple served as honorary chairs for the signature annual UMS fundraising event—Ovation (see below). Much like the Athletic Department, UMS serves as a strong partner with the U-M Health System. “UMS has a long history with Mott and the Health System in getting artists to engage with children at Mott,” said UMS President Ken Fischer (AM ’67). At the same time, he added, UMS also enjoys a long history of engagement with Michigan Athletics. The Harbaughs also do their part for the top priority of the Victors for Michigan fundraising campaign: student support. On June 22, Coach Harbaugh made a special appearance at the home of Regent Denise D. Ilitch (AB ’77) to celebrate a successful year for a student support initiative; launched by the Board of Regents, the initiative involved donors from southeastern Michigan (for details, turn to the inside center page). It’s just one more way the coach is proving himself to be a great teammate within the university community he calls home.

ANN ARBOR | MAY 14, 2016 | CRISLER CENTER HALL OF HONOR University Regents, President Mark Schlissel, the University Musical Society (UMS) Board of Directors, and UMS President Ken Fischer (AM ’67)—along with his wife, Penelope Fischer (MMus ’70)—were joined by honorary event chairs Jim (AB ’86) and Sarah Harbaugh at this annual UMS fundraising event presented by Ford Motor Company Fund. The event highlighted the importance of the arts as part of an overall educational experience that helps U-M students to be well-rounded. The Harbaugh family enjoys a personal connection to the arts; son James Harbaugh, Jr. (LSA Class of 2019) graduated from Coronado School of the Arts in California and has performed with the student-run U-M musical theatre organization MUSKET. Ovation guests included former men’s basketball team captain Jordan Morgan (BSEIO ’13, MEng ’14), a UMS National Council member, and Tyrone Wheatley, running backs coach for the Michigan football team.
