Iconic piece of Disney movie to visit museum S OUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A piece of Hollywood is making its way to South Haven this weekend. The Michigan Maritime Museum will welcome the star of the Disney film, “The Finest Hours,” the 36-foot motor lifeboat 36460. In true Hollywood fashion, there will be a red carpet dock reception at the museum from 2 to 5 p.m. July 9. Revelers can take part in the patriotic fanfare and fun at the reception with music, flag waving and food, all available on the museum’s campus. Guests will also have a chance to see the boat up close and personal at the docks and meet the owner of the boat Jeff Shook, as well as the person largely responsible for its restoration, George Powell. Powell will describe his experiences with the process of restoration as well
as Shook’s work with Disney on the set of “The Finest Hours,” including teaching the actors how to operate the boat. The 36460 will be escorted into South Haven by the United States Coast Guard St. Joseph Station 46-rescue boat, and a flotilla of USCG Auxiliary vessels. If other boaters are interested in following the
escort into port, boats will be organized by the Coast Guard Auxillary three miles north of South Haven near Sleepy Hollow at 1:30 p.m. The event is free and the museum is waiving admission fees between 2 and 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to join in the celebration of the arrival of the famous boat that will be on a longterm loan to the museum.
The Michigan Maritime Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Michigan Great Lakes waterways, maritime history, and culture. Celebrating his mentor Robert Irving III to play at Lighthouse Jazz Festival
W
ith an incredible history, including numerous collaborations with Miles Davis, musician and producer Robert Irving III is continuing to live a life creating and promoting music and its history. Irving was exposed to the world of music at an early age in his hometown of Chicago. “I came from a big gospel music family on both sides,” he said. Gospel music led to an early interest in organs and pianos, but his first musical training came with the bugle. His knowledge of that instrument led to his recruitment into the Robert Taylor Drum & Bugle Corps as a teenager. He was drafted into the brass program at DuSable High School, entering into a group that had spawned jazz luminaries such as Nat ‘King’ Cole and Johnny Griffin. By the time he transferred to Hirsch High School, he was playing multiple brass instruments. It was at Hirsch that Irving would solidify the path that would eventually lead him to Miles Davis. His band teacher, George Hunter, was in a big band called The Moonlighters, a group which spawned the horn section for Earth, Wind & Fire. It was the same teacher who also emphasized the importance of piano to Irving. “That band teacher stressed if you’re serious about your horn, you want learn piano,” Irving said. He would spend his time after school learning piano from Hunter. This gave him what he referred to as “the big picture of musical shapes,” educating him in scales, chords and progressions that would apply to all of his future pursuits in music. “That set a precedent and a discipline for me,” Irving said. “I was playing any song that I heard in all 12 keys.” Robert Irving III would find his way to North Carolina, where

Justin Flagel he became very popular for his unique jazz skills in a region where radio emphasized gospel, country and rock. There he would form a Top 40 band called Your Mama that would grow increasingly popular due to their regular playing of Earth, Wind & Fire music. He educated himself in music through practice, performance and study of orchestration and arrangement while pursuing a degree in business. “I felt that music is a business and that would be supportive of that side of what I needed to do as a music business entrepreneur,” Irving said. He would return to Chicago after eight years, where Your Mama’s reputation and his previous connections with Earth, Wind & Fire would lead to the next step in his career. While attending a birthday party for the wife of keyboard player Larry Dunn, Irving was heard playing
by Miles Davis’ nephew, Vince Wilburn Jr. Wilburn invited Irving to replace his departing keyboard player in his band, Data. Miles Davis, after hearing the demo, in particular a composition by Irving called “Space,” invited him to join him to record in New York. Irving would end up spending two months with Davis, recording all day to help him develop new music. The result of those sessions led to the Miles Davis comeback album, “The Man With The Horn” in 1981. Irving described the surreal nature of his involvement in the project. “I had no idea, no plans to do anything close to playing with Miles Davis,” he said. “It was absolutely like being on top of the world.” The collaborations would continue with Davis’ next album and a tour. His work would eventually put him into position as the musi-
cal director for the band. He and Miles would listen to recordings of performances together and he would apply the notes with the band at the next soundcheck. “Miles didn’t do rehearsals and he didn’t do sound checks,” Irving said. “He needed someone to delegate.” Stepping into that role has influenced Irving’s music to this day, where he still reviews rehearsal tapes to catch the nuances and make the needed course corrections he may miss during live performances. Robert Irving III’s career would continue to expand as he became in demand as a producer. As health issues brought about what appeared to be the end of Miles Davis’ career, Irving dove into producing. He was surprised to receive a phone call from Davis’s manager inviting him back to join a recovering Davis on tour. Circumstances, both due
to scheduling and musical divergence, forced Irving to decline. “I guess this is it,” Irving said. “It was sort of a bittersweet thing.” They kept in touch, but did not work directly together again. Since the death of Miles Davis in 1991, Irving has worked to help honor and maintain his legacy through a number of tribute and alumni bands. He noted the current lack of attention placed on Davis in our culture and his hope to be a part of bringing it back to relevance. His band Generations is one way of accomplishing that goal. The group, which started as a Miles Davis tribute band, came out of the suggestion from Irving’s wife that he incorporate the kids he was teaching into a live band. They have since expanded into a vehicle for Irving’s own compositions. “It sort of became our way of extending the Miles legacy,” he said. “It helps to bring that legacy forward.” Irving is working on bringing that legacy to listeners in a number of ways this year, which would have been Miles Davis’ 90th birthday and the 25th anniversary of his death. Locally, Generations, along with trumpet player Corey Wilkes, will be playing at the Lighthouse Jazz Festival in Michigan City on July 9. He also continues his work with a number of other projects, including his record label, Sonic Portraits. Singin’ the blues Annual winery event a family affair

ERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. — Award winning wine, outstanding blues and the beautiful countryside await visitors at Lemon Creek Winery’s annual Vintage Blues Bash on July 16. This summer concert tradition begins at noon and continues with nonstop music until 8 p.m. The Lemon Family’s favorite event, this year’s musical guests start with the rockin’ blues sounds of Mere Mortals 2 playing vintage rock, blues, and original music. Next up is Shake ‘N Chill, invited again at the personal request of the winemaker at Lemon Creek, a classic blues band out of Indiana with some traditional, smokin’ rhythm and blues. Elwood Splinters Blues Band will finish the day off. A staple of the northern Midwest blues scene, this band is celebrating 20 years of “flat out, down right blues” featuring Ole Harv of WVPE’s Blues
Review fame. The Vintage Blues Bash is a family event. Admission is $12 at the gate for those 21 and older. People under 21 will be admitted for free when accompanied by family. Admission includes three free tastings of estate grown and bottled, award winning Lemon Creek wine, plus a souvenir wine glass, and free parking. Guests can also take advantage of free hayrides. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase food provided by the Outdoor Kitchen featuring vegan or chicken stir fry, prime rib sandwiches and of course brats and corn on the cob. Guests are also encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. All carry in items may be subject to search, as outside alcohol is prohibited. Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff caters to people of all ages

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — One of the largest art fairs in Michiana returns to the lakeside this weekend when the 200-booth Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff takes over Lake Bluff Park Saturday and Sunday. The 55th edition of the event will take place in downtown St. Joseph from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 9, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 10. Artists from across the United States will bring fine art and fine crafts for sale to
the public at this nationally ranked art fair. Nearly 1,000 artists apply for the opportunity to be juried into one of the 200 booths at the event. This year 164 new and 36 returning artists representing 19 media categories and unique, distinctive styles will showcase their work. The Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff is a petfree event. Pets are not permitted within the perimeter of the Art Fair for the duration of the weekend.
In addition to the art fair, the Krasl Kids’ Zone will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday for children to create make-andtake artwork. Donations are appreciated. The Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff features the Children’s Art Purchase Program for young people interested in starting their own art collection. Some of the artists have select art for sale at a cost of $10 and less for children age 14 and under to purchase.

And for the 21 and up crowd, the Krasl added a new feature this year. A Beer and Wine Garden will be located on the Krasl Art Center grounds serving locally produced craft beer and wine. The Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group is the sponsoring organization. The Coast on the Food cARTs stage. Parking is available at Kelley’s Bowl at 2705 Cleveland Ave. and St. Joseph High School. Shuttle buses will run continuously to drop off and pick up guests at the corner of Elm and State Streets. A $1 per person donation is requested. The Krasl Art Center invites the community to the Friday Night Block party from 5 to 9 p.m. July 8 on the KAC grounds. Entertainment will be provided by Mike Struwin and Rootsdown. A tasting tent will feature a selection of wine and beer as well as local cuisine. The Friday Night Block Party is free and open to the public and sponsored by

Many people turned out for the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual celebration of Independence Day Friday at the Apple Festival Fairgrounds in Niles. Children played games, sped down inflatable slides and walked in the event’s first youth parade prior to the main event — fireworks at dusk. Aside from the fireworks, the most popular attractions appeared to be the bounce house area and the elephant ears vending trailer, both of which produced long lines of people waiting their turn for fun or a tasty treat.

The event was made possible through volunteer work, members of the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce and donations, including a $2,500 gift from the city.
