‘I Dream of Rhody’ Rhody Fest is about fun, games, families By Patrick J. Sullivan of the Leader

Sweet dreams are made of this: smiling kids, happy adults and royalty doing the Rhody Wave. The 78th Rhododendron Festival’s royal court, Queen Emma White Thunder, Princess Cori Cardona and Princess Kaila Olin welcome you to the year’s largest community festival. “It’s been a lot of fun,” said Queen Emma of her Rhody royalty experience so far. “It was really cute [at the Sequim Irrigation Festival parade) seeing the little kids waving and smiling.” The trio’s choreographed dance routine aboard their “I Dream of Rhody” themed float was well received in Sequim, and should be again Saturday at the Rhody Grand Parade. “I was really impressed at how the crowd gets so involved,” said Princess Cori. “Everyone did the ‘YMCA’ song with us.” Princess Kaila Olin, who joined the royal court after the resignation last month of Megan Walsh, is happy to be part of Rhody. “They made it an easy transition,” Kaila said of Emma and Cori, girls she came to know during the coronation process. “Everything just fit and we’re having a lot of fun.” She is looking forward this week to seeing her family, friends and classmates Cori Cardona, Queen Emma White Thunder and Kaila Olin welcome you to the 78th Rhododendron Festival. Olin is a junior at Port Townsend High School, while during Rhody. Monday afternoon, preparing to pose White Thunder and Cardona are seniors at Chimacum High. Photo by Patrick J. No problem, said the Rhody queen. “My last name is White Thunder so it’s

Here comes the Grand Parade! Satu rday ’s 78th Rhododendron Festival Grand Parade starts at 1 p.m. on Lawrence Street (Uptown) at the fire hall, proceeds downhill to Monroe Street and then to Water Street, turning to an end on Adams Street. Spectators, especially those along the Monroe Street hill and downtown – don’t leave too early if there are gaps in the parade (with 14 marching bands, which do stop and perform along the way, gaps between units are inevitable). When you see the Jefferson Transit Authority bus, followed by the DM disposal garbage truck – then the parade is over.

Ribbons are awarded for each category (unusual animals, cats and kittens, rabbits, small dogs, medium dogs, large dogs, and one category for goats, llamas and horses). Remember to walk slowly, so that people can take in the sights. In addition, Rhody Fest royalty awards the title of “best decorated.” The winner of “best decorated” is invited to walk in the Grand Parade on Saturday.

The parade progresses along Lawrence to Adams Street (one street past Aldrich’s Market – do not stop on the street or it will back up the parade), where Safeway provides goodies for the participants on the Port Townsend Community Center lawn. Pets must be contained or leashed. All participants younger than 6 must have an adult with them. Line up behind the category sign relating to your pet. Questions? Contact Elsa Golts at 379-1676 or golts@olympus.net. Also, plan ahead and park your car near the end of the parade route, not at the beginning. It means walking to reach the starting line, but that is less disruptive to the parade than walking back through the parade route when it’s over. (It is also closer to See EVENTS, Page 4▼

Carla Caldwell o best. “That’s an eye opener,” Tim noted of the Rhody dad experience. “You really get an appreciation for this commu-

nity and what they do to put on the festival.” In terms of his childhood memories of Rhody, Tim recalls that people would park cars along Lawrence Street and sit on them to watch the parade. “My dad would park our 1941 Buick and those things were so big and heavy we would lay a blanket on top of the car and we’d all sit on it and watch the parade. The corner of Lawrence and Taylor was our observation post.” “Tim’s family goes back so far historically that the Rhododendron Festival is part of the family history,” Carla noted. “For people who are newer, I think the Rhody Fest gives this town part of its identity and its uniqueness. Simply put, the Rhododendron Festival is in the Caldwell family blood. That’s why Tim and Carla Caldwell are so looking forward to riding in a convertible during Saturday’s Grand Parade, serving as grand marshals. Tim Caldwell, Port Townsend High School Class of 1968, met his wife-to-be in college. “First time I came home with Tim from college when we were dating was the Rhody Festival in 1971,” Carla said. “I was in love with him and then I was in love with Port Townsend and then I was in love with the Rhody Festival.” “To us it’s always been the town’s family reunion,” Tim noted. Tim’s mother, Betty, was a Rhody princess in 1941. Two cousins, Carlene DeLeo and Anne DeLeo, were both Rhody royalty and of course the DeLeo brothers were key Rhody Fest supporters for years and years. Tim’s sister, Crissie, was Rhody junior royalty. Grandmothers Maude DeLeo and Caroline Sofie were both senior royalty. Tim’s father, Jim, became namesake of the Port Townsend Golf Club’s annual Rhododendron Festival tourney shortly after his death in 1994. In the 19 years since the Caldwell family adopted the tourney, the event has raised $25,000 for the Rhody Fest. Married for 37 years, Tim and Carla have two children: daughter Courtney (Rhody festival queen in 1997) and son Greg. “The year Courtney was queen we went to about 15 parades that summer,” Carla said, adding that the smalltown parades are always the

Rhody Run XXXV honors Boston Marathon victims this year to reaffirm our collective health goals, but also to bear witness to those who suffered at the Boston event,” said Jennifer Little, Rhody Run race director. “We’re going to recognize our participating survivors, those who suffered injury, and most important, our continuing determination to provide a competitive run that cares for its entrants.” The Port Townsend Marathon Association board, which hosts the annual event, affirmed “Rhody Run XXXV is dedicated to the victims of Boston and reaffirms a continuing commitment to provide a competitive race formula that embraces life and enhances health of its participants.”

For Pat Simpson

In addition to recognizing the Boston Marathon tragedy before race time May 19, Rhody Run XXXV is dedicated to Patricia the memory Simpson of Patricia Simpson, a founding board member of the Port Townsend

Marathon Association and consistent age-group award honoree during her running career. Simpson’s name appears on the finishers’ shirts as final tribute to her contributions to the event and her community. She died Dec. 9, 2012 at age 76. Rhody Run XXXV begins at 11 a.m. May 19.

Recreational running, even competitive road running, is a means to and method for a healthy life. It works for many. Runners can be seen on city streets, park trails and at a more focused venue such as Port Townsend’s annual Rhody Run, the final event of the city’s Rhododendron Festival. What people don’t expect to see are running companions and family supporters lying wounded or dead at the finish of a road race. This tragic reality is now seared in memory following this year’s Boston Marathon. What affected Rhody Run participants and organizers was the personal toll the Boston bombings had on their runners – those whose names and faces are familiar competitors at the Port Townsend even. Multiple age-record-holder Bill Iffrig of Everett, pictured in what is now a famous photograph, multiple men’s overall champion Uli Steidl with his wife Trisha of Seattle, and current Rhody Run men’s defending champion Joe Gray of Seattle personify the “local” participants at Boston who are registered to compete at Rhody Run XXXV on May 19. “We want our Rhody Run

Also, after Saturday’s Grand Parade, the Clan Gordon Pipe Band seeks refreshment inside the Legion Hall (one of its sponsors for the Port Townsend visit). What if that number, or something worse, happens this year? “Tons of people come to watch the bed races so there has to be a show,” said Janet Emery, event emcee and Kinetic Festival High Priestess for Life. “I’ll have the whole town in the middle of the road doing the ‘Time Warp’ or something, but there will be a show.” • Saturday, a new event following the parade is a Cake Picnic sponsored by Boomfest
