Welcome from the Director of Sport
What a week! Fixtures everywhere you turn, energy levels through the roof and the netball season beginning to whirr into action. From our youngest teams to our seasoned pros (the Year 8s in this context), it has been brilliant to see so many students out representing Seaford Sport and enjoying it.
At this time of year, though, things do get… busy. Very busy. The kind of busy where students are running between rehearsals, assessments, clubs, matches and still remembering to do their prep and be a kid! Staff and parents are doing their own juggling act too by teaching, supporting, organising, tracking down lost kit and occasionally wondering if they have accidentally become taxi drivers.

It is part of the charm of the late autumn and early spring terms: rewarding, full… but occasionally a little bit hair-raising
This week, I came across something written by Damian McGrath that made me stop and think (always risky, I know). He talked about the trap we all fall into sometimes: doing good work purely because we hope for recognition, reward or some sort of return. When that return does not show up: no applause, no medal ceremony, or a return on investment, it is easy to feel frustrated.
He referenced a line from The Bhagavad Gita (do not worry, this is not where I go full philosophy lecture on you) that says:
“You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work. Those who are motivated only by the fruits of action are miserable, for they are constantly anxious about the results of what they do.”
Now, I am not suggesting we all start quoting ancient texts, but the message is again simple and surprisingly relevant: If we depend on praise or results for motivation, the winter months could feel very long indeed.
But when we do the work because it matters, because supporting children, coaching them, cheering them on and helping them, we take back control – we have that choice. We are less stressed, less tied to the scoreboard, and more able to enjoy the wonderful chaos of a bustling school life. Ironically, that is usually when our best work happens anyway because it comes from purpose, not pressure.
So, I want to say an enormous thank you, genuinely, to the whole Seaford College community.
To our staff, who somehow make everything happen, even when the calendar looks like a game of Tetris. To our parents and carers, who support from every angle, often with two coats, a travel mug and an unmatched ability to locate missing sports kit on a Sunday evening Finally, to our students, who remind us daily why we do this in the first place.
The article ended with a question that stuck with me, and I will leave it with you too:
If nobody thanked you, rewarded you or returned the favour… would you still do the work you are doing?
As an advocate for Seaford Sport, I believe the answer is yes. Because we are doing it for the right reasons. Your children make every busy, chilly, slightly frantic week absolutely worth it.
Ad alta!

Additional Medical Support
To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.
If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations
As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.
Dogs on the School Site
We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.
Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct
For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.
One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:
‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’
Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.
We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
