Welcome from the Director of Sport

There has been fantastic energy around sport and physical activity across the campus recently. From the organised chaos of a playground football match at break time, to the focus of an Academic PE lesson, or the enthusiasm shown at after-school clubs, students are embracing every opportunity to be active. It is always a joy to see so many choosing to get outside, join in and spend time being active together –sometimes highly competitive, sometimes wonderfully improvised and occasionally with rules that appear to change mid-game!

Last weekend, we were also delighted to host the Seaford Southern 7s U18 Netball Festival, which continues to grow as one of the standout events on the national school sport calendar. It was fantastic to welcome so many talented teams for a brilliant day of competition. The standard of netball on display was excellent, but just as impressive was the atmosphere around the courts, full of encouragement, energy and a genuine enjoyment of the game. Events like this showcase school sport at its very best and provide memorable experiences for students both on and off the court.

During a week that involved a fair bit of travelling and time spent in hotels, I came across an article about how people respond when the “weather turns”. Not just the literal weather (which, being Britain, we are all well trained for), but the moments when things become challenging, uncertain or uncomfortable. In sport, those moments appear regularly at every age: the tough training session, the match that does not go to plan or the skill that takes longer to master than we might hope. These experiences can be uncomfortable, but they are also where much of the learning happens.

The article highlighted how important the environment is in those moments. When the environment is right, students feel able to try, to make mistakes, to challenge themselves and ultimately to enjoy the process of improving and enriching their day

That idea sits closely with how we think about sport and PE at Seaford. We regularly compare what we do with others, learn from best practice and reflect on our own programmes, but we are also very intentional about doing things the Seaford way. School sport and PE continue to evolve, and we want to evolve with them so that the experiences our students have remain meaningful, engaging and relevant.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the Prep School. At that age, barriers tend to be fewer and enthusiasm wonderfully high. Most students arrive keen to take part and ready to enjoy the many different elements that sport and PE can offer. Some love the physical challenge, others thrive on teamwork and the social side, while for many there are huge emotional and mental benefits that come simply from being active and trying something new in a dynamic learning environment.

Our aim is to protect and nurture that mindset. The specific sport being played is not always the most important element. What matters more is the environment in which students experience it – one where they feel supported, challenged and encouraged to develop physically, emotionally and mentally. To simplify, having fun.

Ultimately, the sport itself is only part of the story. What matters most is the environment we create around it, one where students feel encouraged, challenged and inspired to be active. If we get that right, the benefits will stay with them.

Enjoy adding to the environment!

This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is: ‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
