THESIS - SENSORY CITY MASTERS THESIS - SENSORY CITY

“To support the early childhood and social development of visually impaired children, and decrease misunderstanding of visual impairment, any intervention must address the lack of spaces designed for visually impaired children. All children require support to meet developmental goals of independence, self-sufficiency, and the ability to form organic relationships. Any intervention for blind children must provide the required support and be designed with accommodations to meet developmental goals, as well as allowing for opportunities to destigmatize and frame visual impairment as ‘differeing ability’ rather than less ability.”

For thesis studio, I programmed and designed a school and after-school program for visually impaired children in Venice, Italy. During my process, the school design expanded to include simple yet culturally appropriate interventions for making an ancient and culturally rich city more accessible for blind adults and children.

During my research, I volunteered with Lighthouse for the Blind’s SWKIA program so I could understand how to best serve visually impaired kids. I was allowed to create a tacticle design event where visually impaired and blind participants designed a lego house, created a 3D floor plan or drawing, and picked out fabrics from a materials library. Something I learned from the SWKIA kids was they’re capable of almost anything when they have accessibility accomodations, which became the focus of my project.
