Course Leader’s Note
Hello and welcome to the first production of the 2022/23 LCM Musical Theatre graduating year. We are delighted that you can join us for our production of The Addams Family. This is a very exciting time within the Musical Theatre industry – after two difficult years, it is starting to rebuild itself. Performances are commencing, theatres are developing new and exciting work for our post-Covid world, and we are looking towards a brighter, more diverse and accessible industry as a whole. Closer to home, our school is meeting the demands of an ever-changing Musical Theatre world with the implementation of a brand-new curriculum. Developments are happening all over UWL and we are celebrating the excellent news of ranking as University of the Year for both Student Experience and Teaching Quality (Guardian), the first university to hold both of these accolades together. But today is all about the wonderful students in front of you. They are reaching a very important time in their professional development as artists –they are soon to be presenting their showcase digitally for agents and casting directors and are starting to navigate their chosen vocation. This is a chance to celebrate the hard work they have put in over the last few weeks and, indeed, years. Please sit back and enjoy the LCM MT class of 2022/23 production of The Addams Family.
MacLaren – Course Leader for Musical Theatre
The Addams Family has undergone many transformations since the original Broadway production in 2009. It is a show which allows each company member to develop a detailed character. Using animal work, improvisation and devising, the students have imbued their characters with a wealth of nuance and history. The Ancestors lives and deaths could spin off many a musical of their own.
At the heart of this show is a family who love each other fiercely. Like all families they make the odd mistake. So here we have these weird and wonderful characters who are just like all of us, who doesn’t have a monster in their closet?
The Addams Family themes of acceptance and being your authentic self, no matter how strange, encourage us all to ‘move towards the darkness and love’.
