LCHS Earns Cardinal Newman Society Status Lancaster Catholic High School was recognized as a Catholic Education Honor Roll School by the Cardinal Newman Society on Monday. LCHS was one of just three high schools in Pennsylvania to earn the honor.

“It is great affirmation for Lancaster Catholic to be recognized by the Catholic Education Honor Roll,” Lancaster Catholic’s president Tim Hamer remarked. “This distinction confirms our commitment to the mission of Catholic education. I applaud the leadership, administration, students, parents, teachers, and staff for their hard work in assuring a strong Catholic identity permeates all that we do in preparing our students to be future leaders in both society and the Church.”

Lancaster Catholic engaged in a thorough internal and external review of its comprehensive program offerings before being awarded this status. It has received specific recognition for its strong integration of Catholic identity throughout its efforts, including the integrity of its mission, and the strength of its community and rich spiritual live. The Honor Roll also recognized the school’s efforts at integral formation of the minds, bodies, and spirits of its students as well as its comprehensive academic program which seeks to instill a Christian vision of the world and human wisdom and culture.

“The Honor Roll is a helpful tool for families and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school,” said Patrick J. Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society. “It is external validation that a school is both focused and successful in meeting the high calling of Catholic schools to serve the well-being and salvation of students and to serve the common good. We are very pleased to have Lancaster Catholic join in the nationally recognized ranks of excellence; this is a select group. The school has well demonstrated they are successful in meeting the key principles that guide Catholic education.”

The Cardinal Newman Society has recognized over 300 high-performing Catholic high schools nationwide since the program’s inception in 2004.

Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Mr. Murr served as a clinician for the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) Professional Development Day on October 14th at York College.

The session was entitled “A Creative Approach to Building a Percussion Ensemble” and gave attendees tips on how to start a Percussion Ensemble within their school community.

Fall Blood Drive Did you know that a premature newborn may need 1-4 units of red blood cells while in ICU, or an automobile accident victim may need 4-40 units? You can save lives by being a donor at our annual “fall” blood drive. It is a safe and easy process which takes approximately 45 minutes.

The drive will be held Tuesday, November 5 from 8:00 to 2:00 in the Old Gym. The Blood Drive is sponsored by our Future Medical Leaders of America Club and Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank.

Anyone age 16 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds and in good health on the day of the drive may donate. Pennsylvania law requires a parent consent form for students who are 16 years old. Permission forms are available in the Library and must be returned

by Friday, November 1. Unfortunately, International students may not donate since they have not been in the U.S. for 1 complete year.

All donors must present a photo ID at the time of donation.

Beginning Tuesday, October 22 sign-up sheets for donating will be available in the Library.

Athletic Volunteers for the last 2 home regular season games Friday is the last home game for the Crusader football team and help is needed in the concession stand and parking!

Saturday is the last regular season home game for the Lady Crusader soccer team! Help is needed with ticket sales and in the concession booth.

Part-Time Help Wanted in Cafeteria Lancaster Catholic High School is in need of a part-time cafeteria worker for the current year. Hours are Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

St. Anthony holds 34th bazaar St. Anthony of Padua Church will hold its 34 th annual Christmas Bazaar Nov. 9, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Nov. 10, 9:30 a.m. to noon, in the Resurrection Catholic School cafeteria at 521 E. Orange St. With the theme Jesus is the Reason, much is offered including wreath and garden, trim-a-tree, crafts, religious items, and gift baskets. There’s always a treasure to be found at the jewelry table for just a few dollars.

Raffle items are valued at a minimum $50. For $1, take a chance on a television, Fit-bit, garden wagon and bench, mani-pedi, Sister Irenita watercolor, and many gift cards to local restaurants and businesses. Raffle will be drawn at 2 p.m.

Glory Denied- Penn Square Music Festival Glory Denied is the acclaimed opera by Tom Cipullo based on the book by Tom Philpott which tells the true story of America’s longest-held prisoner of war. With over 20 productions, the piece is one of the most frequently performed operas of the 21st-century.

“It is the true story of an American family torn apart during the unsettling era of the unpopular Vietnam War. Cipullo’s masterfully taut adaption of Tom Philpott’s book of the same name, makes a cogent impression…with a score that is by turns chaotic, angular, melodic, harmonious, and even at times, serene. . . . a thrillingly varied score, mesmerizing libretto, . . .” said James Sohre, of Opera Today on November 23, 2018.

Mr. Scott Drackley, former LCHS teacher and current artistic director of Penn Square, will bring four professional opera singers in collaboration with the English Department to enrich the seniors’ study of the Vietnam War Era. Two weeks after standing before the Vietnam Wall on their field trip, students will hear lyrics and music echoing the pain and turmoil of the 1960s-1970s.

Students prepared by reading excerpts from Jim Thompson’s biography and will hear songs from the opera as well as engage in a Q&A with Drackley and the singers about their training and preparation. It is an incredible opportunity to fuse history, music, and psychology as all three converge in this remarkable tale. The story has been fittingly labeled an American epic.

This free event will be presented on Thursday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in Old Main Gym. All are welcome.

Bus picks up at the same location at 7 p.m. for an approximate return to Lancaster Catholic High School at 10 p.m.

FAFSA Completion Night All seniors and parents of seniors are invited to the FAFSA Completion Night at Lancaster Catholic on November 12, 2019 in the Library at 5:30 PM. This is an outstanding way to complete this Financial Aid chore, ask questions of Sonya Mann-McFarland from PHEAA and eat pizza for all of your hard work!

AP Testing Alert!

All students planning on taking AP tests in the spring must register and submit payment through www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/392100. Mrs. Grosh will be visiting AP classes reminding students that the deadline to decide if you are taking an AP test is approaching - November 15, 2019 will be the last day students may register for a test without a $40.00 penalty. Letters are going home to parents this week explaining College Board’s new deadlines.

November 1st is next Friday. If you have Early Decision or Early Action deadlines, you need to contact your School Counselors now to meet those deadlines. Mrs. Taormina and Mrs. Grosh will not be available on October 31 or November 1st.
